I was at the QC game last night. Phams HR was a monster shot that would have probably gone 400+ if not for a fence that it hit.

Additon was solid again although they didn’t have a gun going showing his velocity. He may end up being a usefull lefty reliever for us at some point.

Wallace didn’t swing at any bad pitches, his eye is as good as advertised so far. He got a few chances to show off the glove and I think he’ll be fine at 3rd (as long as he doesn’t put on lots of weight). At worst he may be another Troy Glaus. He’s not going to win any gold gloves but he’s certainly not going to hurt. Time will tell on all that of course.

I’ll be at tonights game as well, I’ll try to get a few pics but my 2 year old son will be with us and that will make it a little tricky

OK, Schumaker once played shortstop. So did Joe Mather. Lots of players grow out of middle infield positions in every organization.

I don’t think the middle infield issue is due to a lack of effort. Most teams have an unbalanced distribution of prospects. It’s just the way things work out: If you roll a dice 60 times, you are unlikely to get every amount exactly ten different times.

You could be right, you know. Maybe the Cards just don’t do a good job working with kids that play those positions. Although, in the case of Greene, I would contend that he has to be considered a bad pick, as the Cards passed on Clay Buccholz to take Greene, after Buccholz had a rough workout at Busch Stadium.

To me..it seems like if you dont get your SS via the HS or Latin route…you have a hard time finding one drafting college players.

I could just be seeing things thru my heavy slanted HS drafting eyes, though.

redbaaron, there is a third possible explanation (besides bad talent assessment or simple bad luck), and that is simply poor ability to develop talent at those positions. Was Tyler Greene really a bad choice at that position of the draft? Or did we just fail to develop his particular skill set in a way that would have let him turn the corner by now?

Dearth of infield bats in the system. Add to the list from above (Tommy Pham move out of MI to OF, rraded Kennedy, Wilson, and Polanco) … Skip Shumaker moved from SS to OF.

How sweet would it be if Shumaker was still a MI? Move his bat to 2B and then Ludwick plays every day in RF, maybe move Joe Mather up as the 5th OF. Our system has a ton of 4th / 5th outfielders as others have noted. I still would like the team to send Skip to winter ball to play 2B then try to move him there in spring training in 2009. Kennedy is showing enough this season that we will be able to trade over the winter if we are willing to eat some of his contract.
