• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Daily Farm Report 6/21/08

Nick Stavinoha will be the ninth player to make his debut for the Cardinals this season. I’m not sure how long he’ll stay, probably at least until Pujols gets back, which shouldn’t be long from now. Rumor has it Shane Robinson will take Nick’s place in AAA. He’s certainly earned that promotion, if the rumor proves to be true (and I’m sure that it will).

Kary Booher looks at the enigmatic Tyler Greene. I’ve already boldly predicted Tyler will have a great 2nd half. He certainly needs to.

On to tonight’s action.

Memphis 5, Nashville 8

Jarrett Hoffpauir 2-for-3, 2 BB.
David Freese 1-for-1, 2B.
Deangelo Jimenez 2-for-5, SB.
Colby Rasmus 1-for-5, 2 K.
Bryan Anderson 1-for-5, 2 throwing errors.
Jaime Garcia 5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 2 WP, HBP, GO/AO 10-2.
Jason Motte 0.2, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

Wild night for Garcia, who’s starting to show that he’s human as of late. At the plate he helped himself by smacking a double. Hoffpauir is hitting .357/.438/.464 for the month of June. I’m not sure what is keeping Adam Kennedy in St. Louis right now. Rough night for Motte, who has been unusually hittable this season. Opponents have hit well over .300 against him since April. I have to think it’s funky BABIP luck, but if anyone has any insight to offer, I’m all ears.

Springfield 1, Tulsa 8

Jon Jay 2-for-4.
Andrew Brown 1-for-4, HR.
Mark Hamilton 1-for-3, BB.
Tyler Herron 6 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, GO-AO 11-4.

Jon Jay could get a hit blindfolded standing on one leg using a toothpick for a bat right now. Mark Hamilton was back in the lineup after being taken out after 1 at bat yesterday for reasons unbeknownst to me. Tyler Herron is one of those players with whom I actually didn’t like the Cardinals being aggressive in promoting. His GB% and K% rates are down considerably, although he did get lots of groundouts tonight. Conspicuously absent in tonight’s lineup: Robinson.

Palm Beach versus Jupiter was PPD

Cedar Rapids 4, Quad Cities 2

Nick Peoples 2-for-4, 1 fielding error.
Ross Oeder 1-for-3, 2B.
Tommy Pham 1-for-4, HR, 3 K.
Josh Wilson 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 HBP, 5 K.
Brandon Garner 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB. wild pitch, balk.

I kinda wished I had gone to this one, as Wilson was a 2nd round pick in 2005 who has been bitten hard by the injury bug. Plus, I of course would’ve loved to see Pham go deep. Oh, well.

Batavia 7, Mahoning Valley 5

Blake Murphy 3-for-5, 2B, 3B, 1 BB (intentional).
Shane Peterson 1-for-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K. Outfield assist, throwing a runner out at home.
Jermaine Curtis 1-for-3, 2 B, 2 R, 1 BB.
Lance Lynn 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, GO-AO 4-1.
Joshua Hester 3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K.
Jason Buursma 1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 K. Allowed 1 of 3 inherited runners to score.

Sandwich pick Lance Lynn had nice debut; considering the mileage already on his arm I hope they continue to take it easy on him this season. Peterson played center field again tonight, I’m not sure if he quite has the range to stay there, but he showed he had the arm to tonight. Blake Murphy AKA The Super Sleeper had a nifty night.

Johnson City 7, Kingsport 6

Niko Vasquez 2-for-5, 1 2B.
Joey Hage 2-for-4, 1 BB, 2 R.
Jarred Bogany 2-for-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K.
Charles Cawley 1-for-3, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K.
Guillermo Toribio 2-for-5.
Alex Castellanos 1-for-5, 2 RBI, 1 K. throwing error.
Randy Santos 5 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 K, 0 ER.
Adam Veres 2 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 ER, 4 K.
Joel Pichardo 0.1 IP, 4 ER.

Niko Vasquez is off to a nice start so far; as is Jarred Bogany. How did he go from being so high on everyone’s list (pro and Division 1) 3 years ago to being undrafted this past year? Once upon a time, Bogany was ranked the 22nd best freshman going into 2006–right ahead of Brett Wallace, Gordon Beckham and Jemile Weeks. Here’s a scouting report from 2005, when BA ranked him the 154th best draft prospect.

In terms of pure tools, Bogany ranks just behind Jay Bruce and Jordan Danks. But he’s more of a raw athlete than a polished player at this point, so he’ll be somewhat of a project for whichever club takes him. He lost three weeks of playing time at the beginning of the season when he fouled a ball off his left big toe in Bush High’s first scrimmage. He’s a plus runner with a quick bat and lots of power potential. He has a long way to go to hit better pitching, however, as he has an inconsistent swing path and struggles with breaking balls. He plays a fine center field and has average arm strength. One scout compares him to Torii Hunter, who had a similar profile coming out of an Arkansas high school and required six years in the minors before putting it all together.

Some bellow and holler about the Cards not taking high-risk, high-reward players but for every Jay Bruce you get a quite a few Jarred Bogany’s, unfortunately. It’s just the nature of the beast. Obviously taking him as a non-drafted free agent an absolute no risk move, and it’s nice to see him produce early on.

  1. I like this structure better than the other. I hope you stick with it. I dont look at everyones stat lines, just the ones im interested in so i would miss out on some of the commentary. The way it is here i can follow who i want and get the info on people having great weeks, etc, stuff i otherwise would have skipped over.

  2. Congrats to Stavinoha - hopefully he will put some offense back into the lineup from the 1B position.

  3. From the VSL, 18-year-old Moises Colorado faced 6 batters yesterday…and fanned all 6. (32 K’s in 19 innings so far.) The kid is listed at 6′ 3″ and 170 lbs., so there’s a lot of room for adding strength & velocity.

Mannbel sighting: 2-5 with a double, he’s down to .328, but you gotta love that 18/10 BB/K ratio.

    Mannbel!

  4. Colorado…a nice traditional Latin surname!

  5. I’d rather see Stavinoha DHing than at first. As much of an offensive black hole as Duncan has been this year, he’s actually a decent defensive first baseman rather than a completely unknown quantity. That’s worth something, particularly since the platoon issue won’t last any longer than Lester does — the Boston pen is predominantly right-handed, just like everyone else’s.

Letting Nick DH would get him introduced to the Show painlessly, and at the same time, paper over the middle-infield manpower shortage. (Trivia Q time: when was the last time a rookie got his first at-bats at DH rather than a field position?) I’d rather see it work that way.

Incidentally, is it just me, or do a lot of these promotions (Nick, Mather, Boggs, Parisi, Worrell) look like auditions — for roles on some other team? If any of these guys turn out to look OK in the majors without being world beaters, their attractiveness as trade bait might be increased. Or not.

  6. Bill, i was actually thinking that same thing the other day. Maybe I am just being optimistic and letting my wishes get the better of me, but i get this sincere feeling that Mo is gonna make a move before the deadline to bring in either a bat up the middle or a bit time lefty reliever….and he’s going to use the like of mather, stavi, etc. to pull it off…if he does, i will love him for it

  7. In terms of trade targets, the Cards could seek a southpaw reliever; a SS; or a starting pitcher. Good to have multiple targets and options.

The promotions are not driven by pursuit of trades. But they are also not incompatible with seeking trades either. They support both the need for players in St Louis and the possibility of trades.

Stavinoha, Parisi, and Worrell are tradeable assets. The deal would have to be pretty sweet for the Cards to part with Mather or Boggs, since they fit better into the long term of the team.

  8. I’d consider Boggs a tradeable asset too. The farm system is starting to get full enough of starting pitchers that no one starter, other than Garcia, should be off the table if a good enough offer comes along. Yes, it should take more to trade him than the other guys.

Stavinoha got his first ML hit today, btw.

  10. At the time being, Boggs would be hard to give up in a trade. Garcia, Mortensen, and Walters are coming along, but have not quite ‘turned the corner’ yet at AAA as much as Boggs has. Boggs has surpassed Parisi and is, for the time being anyway, first in line as a ML candidate in 2009. Anyone is tradeable for the right price, but Boggs is hard for the Cards to surrender.

  11. eric - which team does the lefty highschool kid ferrara pitch for. i did a look through all the rosters from vsl, gcl, and the two a-ball teams and i couldn’t find him. i am pretty sure the cards signed him, is he assigned yet?
