• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Daily Farm Report 6/20/08

LSU was knocked out of the College World Series, but it wasn’t because of 18th rounder Jared Bradford. The game was suspended Thursday and was resumed tonight. Bradford was thrown right into the fire; inheriting the bases loaded with one out in the 1st inning already down by a score of 2-0. On his first pitch he induced a huge double play to get out of the inning unscathed. When it was all said and done, Bradford threw 76 pitches, 49 for strikes. He lasted 5.2 innings and allowed 1 ER on 4 hits and 2 walks, with 5 K’s. That’s pretty good considering he was only on two days rest. His sinker is only 85-88 MPH but with his kind of crazy movement and good control he just might be able get away with it. (The two days rest may have had something to do with the low velocity, and also his movement.) He showed an average curve and a pretty nice circle changeup … or maybe it was a splitter. I’m not saying he’s a world beater, but I think he’s better than your average 18th rounder. Maybe he should always pitch on short rest!

Derrick Goold has all kinds of great prospect-y nuggets, with prominence given to the “why” behind the new-and-improved Shane Robinson.  I really liked hearing how flexible he is to coaching. Robinson was a highly successful college hitter, and I think most players wouldn’t have the humility to retool their swing the way Robinson did. Obviously it’s paid off.

It’s Friday, so that must mean it’s Hot Sheet Day. Colby Rasmus comes in at # 11.

One of the youngest players in the PCL, Rasmus’ averages stood at .214/.313/.345 at the end of May. Despite the poor results, the center fielder was not completely overmatched, as evidenced by his strong sense of the strike zone (31 walks, 48 strikeouts). And though he plays in a hitter’s league, most of his playing time was accumulated in the neutral environments of Memphis and other American Conference locales. A hot start in June (.348/.430/.565) has eased any lingering concern about Rasmus, who’s riding an 11-game hitting streak.

On to the tonight’s action:

Albuquerque @ Memphis was suspended in the 3rd inning with the Isotopes up 6-1.

Springfield 5, Tulsa 2

Jon Jay 2-for-3, 2 BB, CS.
Brandon Yarbrough 2-for-3, 2 BB, 1 BB.
Adam Daniels 5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K.
Justin Fiske 1 IP, 1 H, 3 K.
Fernando Salas 1 IP, 1 H, 2 K.
Shane Robinson 1-for-4, 2B.
Allen Craig 1-for-3, 2 BB.

Daniels pitched for the first time since June 17th. You cannot stop Jon Jay. Mark Hamilton left after one at bat and was replaced by Shane Robinson in the lineup, and Andrew Brown moved to 1B from LF. Not sure why as of yet, be sure to check in with Kary Booher’s blog later. Nice to see Salas rebound after a couple of rough outings.

Palm Beach 1, Jupiter 2

Daryl Jones 2-for-3, BB, SB.
Kyle Mura 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

The team had a total of 6 hits, all singles. Really not much to see here… Jones stole his 11th base of the season in 13 tries. He’s now hitting .310/.393/.479. I think he’s fully reclaimed his “prospect” status and then some this season.

Cedar Rapids 6, Quad Cities 1

Pete Kozma 0-for-4, 1 K, 2 throwing errors.
Adron Chambers 1-for-1, 2 BB, HPB, SB, PO.
Francisco Rivera 1-for-2, 2 BB, 1 K, SB.
Brian Broderick 5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.
Matt Spade 0.2, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 HR.
Marco Gonzalez 2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K.

Seeing this boxscore makes me glad I decided to stay home and watch the College World Series instead. At least my pet prospect Rivera had a good night. Adron Chambers reached base in all of his plate appearances. Rough night for Kozma all around.

Batavia 3, Mahoning Valley 2 (11 innings)

Colt Sedbrook 3-for-5, 3B, throwing error.
Xavier Scruggs 1-for-4, 2B, 1 BB, 1 K.
Jermaine Curtis 1-for-5, 2B.
Thomas Eager 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K.
Ryan Kulik 3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.
Rigoberto Lugo 2 IP, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K.
Adam Reifer 1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K.

Batavia was handed the win-In the bottom of the 11th Edwin Gomez singled on a ground ball to left, then reached 2B on a passed ball and 3B on a wild pitch. Jose Garcia hit walk off sac fly to win it. Xavier Scruggs finally got a hit tonight. Shane Peterson played CF and went 0-for-5 with 2 K’s; he has 5 in 15 at bats already. Impressive debut for Kulik, and it’s nice to see Reifer have a dominant outing.

Johnson City 5, Kingsport 4

Alex Castellanos 2-for-4, 2 RBI.
Niko Vasquez 0-for-2, 2 K, 1 BB, HBP.
Jairo Martinez 1-for-4, HR.
Edgar Lara 0-for-3, 3 K, 1 BB, CS.
Reynier Gonzalez 5 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K.
Kevin Thomas 3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.
Jorge Rondon 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, save.

Mmmm…yeah. Not much jumps out at me here.

  1. Speaking of John Jay. He was mentioned in that article as well. Down in the “In The Team Picture” section.

  2. Has anyone seen Mura 1st hand? I’d love to know someones live perception of him. He seems to be putting some pretty solid outings together.

  3. I have seen him. He doesn’t throw very hard, maybe 87. He has a big curveball, but it’s slow and loopy and doesn’t seem to have a ton of depth. That was over a year ago, so I don’t know if he’s improved, being under Dennis Martinez probably has helped. I came away unimpressed, though.

  4. Clement was garbage. Film at 11.

This one I would have fully supported.

  5. Jon Jay is sick right now - how long before a call to Memphis?

Looks like Kozma was a Rendevouz tonight. :D

  6. Izturis strained his right hamstring in the game last night. With the cards already playing with a short bench, does Hoffpauir finally get the call? I hope so.

  7. Any chance Shane Robinson could handle a middle infield position?

  8. I think Jon Jay really needs to get a call up to Memphis soon. Of course, there’s quite a logjam there of outfielders already, but they guy is obviously ready to be moved up.

I’m really excited to see Adam Reifer’s progress this year. I love the guy’s arm, and I’m looking forward to seeing if he can put that talent into some sort of usable form.

  9. I thought I heard that Scruggs was going to play 3B. Obviously it’s only been a few games, but I’m starting to wonder if I made that up or not.

  10. I suspect Barden will come up, as opposed to Hoffpauir.

  11. Barden up would be fantastic. Hopefully he can wrestle 2B away from Miles & Kennedy and they play Ryan at SS.

  12. Leach’s blog says the cards will NOT call up a middle infielder. Instead it will most likely be Stavinoha.

  13. Scruggsie played 3B as a sophmore, 1B as a junior. For now, the Cards are keeping him at his current postion.

  14. Stavinoha over Barden? Not a move I’d make. I don’t think Stavinoha’s going to hit in the bigs at all and his fielding is not good from what I’ve seen. He moves like a lumberjack.

  15. [...] Daily Farm Report 6/20/08 LSU was knocked out of the College World Series, but it wasn’t because of 18th rounder Jared Bradford. The game [...] [...]

  16. Why shouldn’t Stavinoha get a call up? We are playing in AL Parks, so he can be the DH. As for his offense, he’s hitting the cover off the ball in Memphis, so he is certainly deserving of a promotion.

  17. Leach is reporting Stav up and Iz2 to the DL, Stav is likely to play 1st or DH against the lefty starters Sunday and Tuesday. Pujols is likely coming back thursday so I think they wanted to use someone that wouldn’t embarrass themselves but that they don’t mind losing an option year on. Not sure what he has over Barden though since Stav isn’t on the 40 man and Barden is. Carp will have to go to the 60 day DL to add Stav onto the 40 man.

  18. Shane Robinson has been promoted to AAA.

  19. I’ve seen them. Barden is more versatile defensively, but despite his average, he gets fooled easily and has some Willie McGee ugly swings. Stav is a stiff in the OF (decent arm though), but he can rake at the plate. Think a slightly smaller Troy Glaus with similar mobility.

  20. Nice, bringing up a guy who is allergic to walks.

Also, Stavinoha is better against RH.

  21. Thanks for the Shane Robinson info…I hope you dont mind but I shared the info and linked it on Cards Talk.

A little traffic cant hurt, right?

As for Stavy..if my memory serves me correctly he was hitting nearly .400 for most of 2007 vs LHP and has always crushed LHP.

I cant find his 07 splits.

  22. No, I don’t mind at all

  23. Stav’s 08 Splits:

    vs RHP .360/.377/.556 .933
    vs LHP .317/.370/.439 .809

    Total: .346/.375/.519 .894

  24. oh forgot to credit Minorleaguesplits.com for the information

  25. I know I personally appreciate the info that is given early about players movement…and I think its safe for me to say…everyone appreciates it.

Its come quite a long way in 3 or 4 years..when Bo Hart, Scott Seabol and John Gall where the minor league movement fodder.

So more Cards fans should get involved early and understand the moves, follow the play and get ready…b/c as we have seen.

These guys can be there in no-time!

Thanks for the splits..but can anyone find Stavy’s…I know at one point in 2007 he was well over .380 vs LHP and that was at least half way thru the season!

  26. Found it…..it the Joe Strauss story about the DL of Izturis and Stavy’s call up

“Stavinoha hit .343 against lefthanded pitching at Memphis last season”

With Skip and Duncan’s sickness towards LHP..that is a needed asset.

    Especially with 2 LHP’s going on Sun/Mon

  27. Stavinoha was much better against southpaws than righthanders in 2007. In fact, he was downright bad against right-handers in 2007 and has to have drastically improved against them this season. The abilities of players are best viewed across multiple seasons.

Izturis seems to have hamstring issues that may be chronic. Unless the Cards swing a deal for another SS, its possible Barden may get some playing time in StL later in the summer.
