The QC Times has some notes on roster moves throughout the organization:
- Brett Wallace is going to start at Quad Cities. I was kind of hoping he’d jump all the way to Palm Beach but don’t be surprised if he’s there by the end of the year.
- Richard Castillo and Oliver Marmol are heading down from PB to QC. The River Bandits are also picking up infielder Ross Oeder and catcher Roberto Espinoza.
- Mike Folli is heading to PB while 5 others got the boot. Thomas Eager, Luis de la Cruz, Jose Garcia, Domnit Bolivar and Osvaldo Morales are all heading to short season squads.
Kary Booher has some more notes on Mark Mulder’s start in Springfield.
Short DFR tonight as Quad Cities was canceled and Palm Beach had the night off. I’m just back from a wedding to boot, so forgive me if I’m out of sorts.
- Brian Barden goes 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. He’s not hitting that many line drives so there’s a little bit of luck involved but for the year he’s got a .306/.387/.452 line (prior to this game). Is he a real upgrade over say Adam Kennedy or Aaron Miles — or is this simply “The John Gall Story Part II: Middle Infielder”?
- Colby Rasmus went 1-for-3 with a walk.
- David Freese went 2-for-3 with a double and a HR.
- Jaime Garcia got shelled. He allowed 6 ERs in 5 innings on 6 hits and 5 walks (including a HR). The upside. . . he struck out 5 and had a 9:5 GO:AO ratio. Regardless of this bad outing, this may be the simplest upgrade the big league club can make during the year — promote Garcia to the STL bullpen and demote Randy Flores.
- Matthew Scherer struck out 1 in a perfect frame.
- Jon Jay was 1-for-3 with a walk.
- The Redbird offense collected 2 walks and 7 hits but none for extra bases.
- Should we start the countdown to Mark McCormick being moved to the bullpen? He simply hasn’t been good this year and tonight was no different. He threw just over half of his 73 pitches for strikes. In 4 innings, he allowed 4 hits and walked an absurd 4 batters (if he could walk 4 batters in a row, he’d be right at home with the major league team — zing!). He only struck out 2 on the way 2 ER.
- Scott Vander Weg threw 2 scoreless, walking 1 and striking 1 out.
- Marco Gonzalez and Josh Dew both threw a scoreless frame as well. Dew struck out 2. While he’s still getting groundballs, Dew’s strikeout rate has been nearly halved at Springfield. He needs some time to adjust to AA life.

Booo on sending down Castillo.
Oh and also booo at Wallace not starting at PB.
why did castillo get sent down? he was pitching very well at palm beach.
It would be fun to see Wallace and Pete play on the same side Infield, but count me in the group of people who think he should be at PB.
My dream was a PB run for Wallace and get a brief stay at Springfield to end the 2nd half and then play with them in the playoffs.
i see no problem with wallace going to quad cities. let him get his feet wet there (sorry, i wasn’t trying to talk about the flood waters), and move up to palm beach to finish the season. there is still enough time to get 250 at bats.
Just a correction:
Jaime Garcia had 5 walks, not strikeouts. He had 1 K on the night
yea there really was not upside in the garcia start tonite…no control and kinda hittable
i’m not sure if garcia should move to the big club in relief or not…but i do know that we need to do something with randy flores that doesn’t involve him pitching anymore
I wouldnt be shocked to see Wallace jump Palm Beach and head to Springfield.
I dont think Wallace’s bat is going to keep him Iowa too long.
Sorry Bridges of Madison County and the Field of Dreams…Brett Wallace is too damn good for Iowa.
Haha!
[...] confidence. Since everyone else has already said it better than I, I leave you with two links: the Daily Farm Report from today at Future Redbirds: Jaime Garcia got shelled. He allowed 6 ERs in 5 innings on 6 hits and 1 walk [...]
Ha giving out false info about the 1 walk and then somebody else repeats it without checking the facts.
Is today the day? For a 21 year old catcher to get the call to the big leagues? I will be extremely disappointed if Anderson doesn’t get the call. He is clearly the next in line but I can see a AAA backup getting the call instead….
As always - Great site. Vivaelbirdos used to be my first cybertrip everyday, now its futureredbirds….
I’m extremely happy Wallace with be in QC, and so should you readers. I’ll be able to give a firsthand account of what I see from him.
If Wallace murders MWL pitching for a few weeks, I’m pretty sure he’ll get the Palm Beach promotion; Quad Cities is fine for now–let’s see how he adjusts to wood bats before he gets sent to the toughest hitter’s park, in the toughest hitter’s league.
Colby Rasmus since May 25: .390/.495/.636 with a 16/18 BB/K ratio in 77 at-bats. I think it’s fair to say he’s ALL the way back. Huzzah!
Let’s hope Jaime Garcia’s terrible outing was just a result of the extra rest days–it’s kind of a standard cliche that when sinkerballers are *too* strong, they lose some of their sink. Maybe that’s what happened yesterday….
I’m with Erik: Wallace being assigned to QC gives me a chance to see him play. Bravo!
Now I just need them to open I-80 from Iowa City to QC so that I can make the 2 hr drive from M’town to see him play as well…
I would prefer that Bryan Anderson NOT get called up in response to the Molina injury, unless Yadi is going to be out considerably longer than currently expected. For better or worse, LaRue figures to get most of the playing time while Yadi is out. It does Anderson no favor to bring him up and have him ride the bench.
Has Wallace actually signed a contract? If so, I missed it.
erik, i just noticed that quad cities is scheduled to open the 2nd half in cedar rapids on thursday. are you guys going to be able to get these games in? if so you might get to see the pro debut of brett wallace.
I hope so. Vets Stadium is very close to the flooding area, but it’s a bit on a higher part of ground and shouldn’t be affected much. I didn’t see it flooded or anything. But as far as being able to get there, that could prove difficult. I’m sure they will relocate the games somewhere if need be, where I’m not sure. The water is gone down a lot and should continue to do so, so hopefully they’ll be able to get it in.
I suspect Wallace will get 50 ABs, and 100 at most, at Q.C. before heading to Palm Beach. The plan is for him to probably be the starting 3B in Springfield in 09.
I think promoting Garcia to pitch out of the pen would be a bad move. He still really hasn’t built up much arm strength. He threw 137.2 innings in 2006 and then was limited to 103.1 last year.
Can we really expect him to step into the rotation next year and give us 180 innings?
Plus its not very likely he’ll be able to get ready on a moments notice. He’s going to need the Anthony Reyes treatment, which means he’ll need extra warmup tosses. He probably won’t be able to get up and get loose within 7-8 tosses in the pen. So close, late inning action wouldn’t be the ideal situation to bring him in and thats what we need.
I would like to see Wallace and Kozma advance through the system ala Rasmus and Anderson. Hopefully in a year or two they will be sitting at AAA awaiting the call up to the big leagues.
I would love for both Wallace and Kozma to advance together, but the one big difference this time is Wallace is nearly 2 years older then Kozma.
Should if they both advance together, it will mean either Pete is on the fast track or god forbid Wallace struggles.
I do like putting Wallace and Kozma together though..a little competition between the 2 should motivate each guy.
Luhnow stated the QC’s coach said Kozma is ready for a promotion whenever they want and the same coach said he played with Alan Trammell in the minors and Pete is every bit the player Trammell was and more advanced at the same age.
Great praise!
Hey guys, I know this is off topic but, do you know where I can find a list of Draftees and their status with regards to whether they are signed or not? How are the Cardinals doing with their picks? Is Wallace signed yet?
Bold prediction: Wallace will have more HR’s than Pete by late July, even with a 200 AB head start.
i wouldnt call that a bold prediction, but i feel where you are coming from….as long as both their ops’s stay near each other(assuming they stay average to above average)…i’ll be happy
maybe now that pete isn’t the new toy anymore, he won’t feel as much pressure to produce and he will raise his level of play higher than the good level it is already at
It’s going to be interesting to see what happens if Wallace beats the snot out of the ball at QC and at PB.
I sincerely doubt Anderson will be called up as the third catcher. As stated above, LaRue figures to get most of the playing time and I would suspect the org would rather bring up Mark Johnson to sit on the bench than waste one of Anderson’s options.
Again, assuming Yadi will be back sooner than later. Can’t be too careful with these concussions.
I hear everyone on the sensible thing being keeping Anderson in AAA, BUT, I still think there is something to be said for having your best option playing. Having experienced a few concussions myself I would rather Yadi have more than enough time to recover (vs. getting into a Matheny type situation). That said, if someone is taking at bats at the big league level why not Anderson. He has shown the aptitude and has earned his spot. For that matter it seems that Colby’s bat would be a boon for interleague play… As for our LHP conundrom - I just don’t see many lefties who will do a better job than the combination of McClellan, Perez, and Izzy. If you have good relief pitching you are not as reliant on the LOOGY….
Good to see Castillo assigned to Quad Cities. He’s just a kid. Let him play at a more apt level. Similarly, good to see de la Cruz and Bolivar step down a level or two. All three have lots of potential in the long run.
Good to see the Cards make room for Oeder at Quad Cities. He will be fine at this level.
The Quad Cities team should be strong in the 2nd half. The rookie league squads too. We had some talent stashed in EST.
a more apt level? the dude hadn’t given up an earned run in palm beach. what is the point of moving him down when he is dominating the level he is at?
to get him more innings, would be my guess. he was pitching in a relief role. maybe they want to send him down a level to be a part of the piggyback rotation, since it’s been disbanded in all places but QC
he started last time out

Derrick Goold had a laundry list of signed prospects on Birdland the other day. Baseball America’s draft database (subscriber content) does a pretty good job of recording signings as well.
