There are still some big names in play, Isaac Galloway, Eric Thames and the red baron’s own favorite personal cheeseball Harold Martinez. Rather than post after post after post, I’ll just be updating on this post throughout the day with who they’ve picked an my thoughts. I’ll probably stop around 20-25th round or so. I also am on “dad duty” for a little while, so if things slow down for a bit, you know why.
215. Anthony Ferrara, LHP, Riverview HS. Here’s a video of him at Takkle. Coming off an injury. High risk, but high reward. Nice. I like that. He’s a South Florida recruit. BA ranked him the 3rd best prospect in the World Wood Bat Fall Championship back in Nov of 2006, ahead of Tim Beckham. Apparently that was pre-injury. Here’s his scouting report, by BA. They ranked him the 189th best prospect of this draft. Blessed with an electric left arm, Ferrara has been a well-known prep prospect for the past three years. At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, Ferrara is lanky and projectable, with an ideal pitcher’s frame. Ferrara also has a pitcher’s mind and shows advanced maturity on the mound. He throws three pitches, all of which could be average or better. His fastball sits between 89-91 mph now, and his curveball and changeup are advanced as well. He shows plus command and is a competitor on the mound. Teams’ main concern will be with his injury history. After having issues with his shoulder last year, Ferrara visited Dr. James Andrews but only required rest, not surgery. He did have to sit out the Aflac Classic at the end of the summer.
245. Ryan Kulik, LHP, Rowan U. Where is Rowan U, I wonder? Wherever it is, Kulik had 144 K’s in 94.1 innings, to 24 BB and 61 hits. Named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Year. D III All American.
275. Aaron Luna, LF/2B, Rice. Football player, was Mizzou QB Chase Daniel’s RB in high school. That in itself is very cool. Power hitter, but his #’s have been a little down in the department this season. Here’s a video of him.
Posted a .473 OBP, walking 46 times this season. Lacks a true position, but hard nosed kid with some pop in his bat. I like it. Here is a Daniel pass to Luna, and then Luna running a man over to get into the end zone.
305. Alejandro Castellanos, 2B, Belmont Abbey College. Again with the small schools. Sig! He’s making me google like crazy! These guys are hard to dig info up on. He hit .390/.452/.683 with 12 HR this season. Division II school.
335. Devin Shepherd, RF, Col of Southern Nevada. NJCAA school. Hit .343/.453/.429. Drafted in the 5th rd. pick of the Twins 2 years ago, but wanted 1st round money and went to OU instead. He was dismissed from the program…that doesn’t sound good. BA named him the California Collegiate League’s (summer league) # 1 prospect over Kyle Russell, who was his teammate for the Foresters. Above average strength, and he has some ability to hit for average and power, but very raw in the power department now. Nationally ranked by BA the 72nd best draft prospect 2 years ago. Their scouting report of him then:
Shepherd has been on the prospect map for awhile, playing in USA Baseball-sponsored events domestically and internationally, and has earned a reputation as a star of showcase events. Last summer provided two highlights, as Shepherd was the MVP of the Aflac Classic in Aberdeen, Md., then won the home run derby at Team One Baseball’s Cape Cod High School Classic. To his detractors, though, he’s a showcase and batting-practice player who doesn’t carry his tools into games. Scouts who like him point to a pro body with average speed and athleticism, slightly above-average arm strength, and more than enough strength to overpower baseballs. Shepherd has plus-plus power to the pull side and could be a 30-homer slugger if it all comes together.
What has frustrated scouts is that he hasn’t yet, and with the dismissal and the lack of being able to put it all together makes you wonder. He’s committed to Oregon St. but is considered signable. According to BA, he hit 9 HR with a wood bat in a workout. But you have to like the Cards gambling on upside here.
365. Michael Swinson, CF, Coffee HS. Per baseballscoutz.com, “Swinson is a sleeper in the draft. We see him going 10th-15th round. Michael is a 6.5 runner in the 60 and throws 88mph from the outfield. Swinson has a very quick bat and surprising power.”
395. Mitch Harris, RHP, US Naval Academy. Great pick! BA ranks him 107th overall, and the 2nd best senior of the draft. Great frame, 91-93 MPH fastball, good cutter and a slider. The big problem obviously is he’s got a prior commitment to the Navy. Hopefully something can be worked out. ESPN.com has an interesting story on him here.
425. Charles Cutler, C, California. Hit .321-.414-.395 for the Golden Bears. Reportedly has a good arm. You gotta have catchers, I guess.
455. Scott McGregor, RHP, Memphis. 5.19 ERA, allowed 115 hits in 78 innings. Is he related to someone in the org, or what?
485. Miguel Flores, RHP, Cerritos College. 7-2, 2.07 ERA, 113 IP, 100 H, 48 BB, 121 K. Per BA: “Drafted in the 37th round in 2006 by the Padres, Flores shows a sharp slider and runs his fastball up to 92 mph, and he’s had success as his conference’s two-time pitcher of the year. He’ll be a reliever as a pro and needs to improve his strike-throwing capability.”
515. Joshua Hester, RHP, Freed Hardeman U. 6-2, 1.52 ERA, 89 INN, 55 H, 12 BB, 105 K. Does it get any better than that?
545. Jared Bradford, RHP, LSU. 10-4, 4.05 ERA, 80 IP, 94 H, 20 BB, 73 K. Sinker/slider guy. Throws sinker in the 85-90 MPH range. Former 21st rounder of the Rays in 2005.
575. Xavier Scruggs, 1b, UNLV. Baseball America’s #197 draft prospect. .379/.480/.749, 20 2B, 20 HR, 40 BB, 50 K. Could be a tough sign as he is only a junior.
Scouts and opposing coaches were impressed by Scruggs’ improvement this season over last, reflected in his outstanding performance. Scruggs ranked among the national leaders in the triple-crown categories (.389-20-65) as well as slugging percentage (.778 ) and on-base percentage (.489), and he and was named the Mountain West Conference player of the year. He’s strong and fairly short to the ball, and has greatly improved his plate discipline, allowing him to get into hitter’s counts and sit on a particular pitch. He has good plate coverage and loft power and realizes he’s strong enough that he doesn’t have to pull everything to hit the ball hard. Scruggs didn’t help his draft value by moving off third base and playing mostly first this season, though he’s a better fit at first defensively. At 6-foot-1 he’s a shade short for the position.
605. Luis Mateo, SS, Puerto Rico HS. Don’t know much about him, but there is a scouting video if you want to check it out.
635. Joe Rigoli, 1b, Pace U. Cardinals 2004 42nd round pick. Son of a Cardinals’ scout.
665. Colt Sedbrook, SS, Arizona. .333/.434/.439. Check him out in the super regionals tonight on ESPN.
695. Jon Bravo, Azusa Pacific, RHP. Johnny Bravo may think he’s pretty, but for a small school he has ugly stats. 89 innings, 100 hits, 15 HR, 74 K. 5.76 ERA. Only 5-7, but reportedly has a good fastball.
725. Zachary Pitts, RHP, Louisville Senior, 4.90 ERA 75.1 IP, 71 K, 22 BB, 88 hits. He was better as a junior.
755. Jason Buursma, RHP, Bucknell U - Wallace Award finalist. 2 way player, went 9-3 with a 2.58 earned-run average in 83.2 innings, just 10 walks and 78 strikeouts, while opposing hitters batted only .226 against him. Hit .367 with 13 HR . He’s a submariner. Senior, easy sign. Big time college performer. Could be an interesting reliever. It’s Josh Dew, part 2. Here’s a shot of funk for ya.

785. Chris Swauger, OF, The Citadel Another senior. A lefty with some sock at the plate. Hit .360/.485/.603. Hit 51 BB to 35 K. Very nice power especially considering his home park, which is an 80 according to Boyd’s park factors. Here’s a video of him hitting a homer the other way against Nebraska, and another HR video from last year as well.
815. George Brown, LHP, St. Johns. Another senior. Big time control pitcher, only 9 walks in 85.2 innings, and also only 58 K’s. In all four years at school averaged 1 BB per 9. PJ Walters type, 82-88 MPH fastball, plus changeup.
845. Matt Frevert, Missouri St. RHP. Closer and captain for the Bears. 42 K’s in 34.1 innings but an ERA of 4+. Regressed from his sophomore season, when he posted an ERA of 0.47 and a 33:4 K/BB ratio.
875. Brett Lilley, 2B, Notre Dame. Diminuitive IF who will take one for the team, was hit by a pitch as often as he would walk, 31 times to be exact, inflating his .459 OBP.
905. Brett Bruening, RHP, Grayson County College. Big guy, mechanics look decent judging by his video. Throws up to 95, according to BA. Command issue, and came off elbow surgery not long ago.
935. Justin Leith, LHP, Barron G Collier HS. Finally, a high schooler. Here’s a story on how his coach helped him add 8 mph to his velocity. Committed to Florida International. Perfect Game’s scouting snippet:
Justin is a very polished LHP with tons of upside. Throws from a ¾ slot with a very easy arm action, and clean mechanics. Has a great feel for pitching on the mound, and was able to keep hitters off balance. There is plenty of room to fill out in his frame and add a lot of velocity.
1022. Shane Boras, 2B, Junipero Serra Catholic HS. Yes, that is Scott Boras’ son. I’m sure his dad will advise him to just go to USC.
1115. Daniel Jimenez, LHP St. Charles North HS. (IL) 6-4, 205 pound lefty. Throws in the high 80’s. Considered to be signable.
1175. Curt Smith 1B/LF, U of Maine. Another big time college performer. Hit .403/.498/.722 with 11 homers, 12 for 14 on steals. Born in Curacao. Led American East conference in BA and SLG.
1265. Blake Murphy, C, Western Carolina. Another senior, so he should sign. This guy has Nintendo like stats. .358/.531/.740 with 16 homers. 55% extra base hit rate. Drew 51 walks to 32 K’s. And he stole 22 bases. Did I mention he’s a catcher? Walked 52 times last season, with a 1.178 OPS. Drafted previously by the Yankees in the 37th round in 2003. BA says “He shows excellent athleticism behind the plate with an impressive combination of power and speed.” Project Prospect named him on of the Draft’s Best Sleepers, saying ” Blake Murphy is the best player in the nation who no one knows about. Highly thought of out of high school, Murphy has quietly developed into a really special player. The Catamounts – cool nickname, huh? – backstop hit .358/.531/.740 this season with 51 walks, 32 strikeouts and went 22 for 28 stealing, again as a catcher. While Western Carolina plays in the Southern Conference they played a respectable non-conference schedule – including a game against Rice in which Murphy hit 2 of his 16 home runs – and ended up with the 119th strongest schedule (out of 293) and they play in a slight pitchers park (92 PF). Murphy has added a little more power to his game from last season (54.9 XBH% from 45.7%) while increasing in walk rate (21.3% from 18.2%) and decreasing his strikeout rate (13.4% from 15.8%).” This pick rocks. How did so many other teams pass on him so many times?
1354. Chris Taylor, C/OF, Charlotte. Another power-hitting catcher. Taylor hit .349/.439/.660. 36/37 BB/K ratio. Senior.
1382. Brandon Sizemore, 2B, College of Charleston. All or nothing slugging 2B, gotta like that at the bottom of the draft. Started all 59 games, slugged 20 homers and 25 doubles, a .350 Isolated Power but K’d 50 times. Was 11 for 12 in steals.
1409. Tony Asaro, RF, UC Irvine. Hit .326/.383/.568, some nice ISO. Previously played at Pepperdine.

is day 2 televised?
no
the first few rounds should be a bit interesting today, this sounds like a proper way to cover today action also.
Congrats on the traffic yesterday, im sure a lot of new people peeked in and they were able to see some of the work that you daily put into this site. Thanks for that by the way.
Thanks for all your good work on this site. You’ll be up to 2 million before you know it.
Can anyone find the link for the flash version of the draft tracker?
What time does it start today?
I have reports to do at work, not sure how I am going to get them done now….so much draft, so little time!
starts 11:30 Eastern
Erik the flash version will probably become available at like 10:40, just a guess though.
I found it.
Yeah looks like they just added it.
I am up, ready for the some action…lets find some gems
The key words on this day are “high ceiling.”
And a lefty HS kid to kick off the day.
anthony ferrara i believe?
theres the high risk high reward guy some of us were looking for, stock dropped due to injury
Jaime Garcia 2.0?
Nice start to the day. I like it already.
Ferrara will be a tough sign. . .he was expected to go in the top 3 rounds, and has a scholarship to South Florida. Physically he resembles Andy Pettite in the face. His ERA last season was 0.55.
Let the day of the lefty begin.
Ryan Kulik
here come the lefties we were hering about, just a bit later than expected
And not just for us - there was four LHPs in a row.
kulik is a senior with crazy good stats. should be a cheap sign, hopefully saving some money for some high schoolers later.
Kulik was the D-3 national leader in strikeouts (144) and K’s per 9 IP (13.44).
FGC- you werent lying about his stats, very impressive
What’s the story with Aaron Luna?
luna is chase daniel’s high school football teammate. he can mash, but doesn’t really have a position.
Wayne Graham said — “Aaron is probably one of the premier power hitters in the country. He can play multiple positions. We’re hoping for an outstanding year. He’s one of our leaders.”
Aaron Luna is Chase Daniel’s HS RB and has a chance to be a Dan Uggla type of player if they can improve his footwork around 2B.
He is very strong and one of those typical Rice U…Gamers…hard nosed, dirty all out guys.
Love this pick…this is better the Jermaine Curtis
After Henley last year, I heart Rice players!
Looks like a Tyler Henley-type pick. . .only hit .319 his junior season with moderate power (9 HR’s) and speed (12 SB’s).
“Physically he resembles Andy Pettite in the face.”
This is good. I always thought of Andy Petite as an attractive man…
Any info on Castellanos? I only have this page pulled up at work and appreciate the info passed along.
he was his HS MVP if that means anything at all
the poltitions are making things difficult as usual
castellanos has some pop. he hit 12 homers and 31 doubles in 249 at bats this year.
I was kinda hoping that the Cardinals would take Priday.
Roarke - me too. I was even more disappointed that the Astros grabbed him.
i don’t think people realize how big time shepherd was when he came out of high school. this guy was supposed to be a star. he is a former 5th round pick of the twins who spend his first year at oklahoma before transferring for this year.
I like the Shepherd pick. In video he reminds me a little of Frank Thomas. If I’m not mistaken, he’s been on the radar for a while(did the Twins pick him a couple years ago?), but if I am mistaken I still like his scouting video.
Fewgood, I was just about to post that. He was a preseason all-American in BA, ranked as the best JUCO player in the country.
it sounds like he was one of the top HS guys, why did he go to nevada?
Fewgoodcards - you’re right. He’s originally from Oxnard, Calif. (home of Dmitri/Delmon Young), and was a 5-tool guy coming out of h.s. Some thought he was one of the best outfielders in the country. Had a big year at the juco and was supposed to go to Oregon State. I bet he’s signable.
I love the way Day 2 is going so far, I wish i felt the same about day 1
Shepherd is apparently an Oregon State Recruit for next year. A school we haven’t been successful in signing.
fgc, my bad, good stuff.
My boy John Flanagan, went to school with him. good kid, hope he does well in KC
Alright, Mitch Harris! I wanted this guy… I hope we can sign him…
is it just me or are there a lot of illinois prospects?
Hill signed last year so i hope harris can too. Sounds like it shouldnt be an issue.
The Cardinals always seem to do a little better at day 2. they know how to peg some good sleepers.
Its showing, not one pick that i hate yet.
Does anyone know when the roster for Batvia will be announced? I’m going to a game on the 19th and was wondering.
The Cardinals always seem to do a little better at day 2. they know how to peg some good sleepers.
The problem is they treat day one like they’re drafting for organizational filler, and day 2 like they’re trying to hit home runs. They could use a nice mix on both days.
i just hope the navy lets harris play b/c he is a steal at this point.
Ah, Swinson.
Aaron Hicks lite?
They always try and play it safe on the first day, and then go with some upside, tough sign guys on the second.
Not a bad strategy really.
from the ESPN story it sounds like he wants to work out something with the navy that will allow him to play ball but still fulfill his commitment. Whatever happens i respect the guy, whatever decision he makes.
They have taken 4 or 5 guys who are going to be tough signs…impressive stuff.
Now lets get them signed!
I think they take a break here anyways Eric, not sure how long
next round starts up in about 5 minutes. i will take over if erik isn’t back.
The Cardinals did well on day 1. It is all about perspective. Lurhnow has taken this farm system from being consistently ranked in the 28-30 range up to 16 this past year. He. Knows. What. He. Is. Doing.
How can you argue with getting Wallace? That by itself makes day 1 something to be happy about.
thanks you, fewgood. bless you laddy. kids! it’s always something!
I don’t know if you guys are listening to the live feed, but you have to love Tommy Lasorda. (Hopefully thats him or else I sound like an idiot.)
Did they just draft another Flores Brother?
http://www.cerritos.edu/hpea/athletics/sports/baseball/2008/bios/players/flores_m.asp
I like Miggys favorite food…everything.
Sounds alot like another Miggy we all know .
Callis chats at 1 pm central…. let’s get in there and get some Cardinal questions answered!!!
Freed Hardeman IS A VERY SMALL Collage. VERY SMALL. I didn’t even know they had a baseball team. They don’t have a football team.
As for Shepherd at OU, he was a constant sore spot among the fans. He was a lightning rod. He got every chance you could ask for to prove the tools could translate to success on the field, but he looked overmatched at times. He had a bad attitude and was kicked off a team that didn’t make the NCAA tourney.
I think the tools are there, but he has to prove he can mature and play better on the field.
has harol martinez really not been taken yet? come on cards…take a shot on him, even if signing him is highly unlikely
How many college righties can a team take in a draft?
To follow up on shepherd, he hit .235 with 1 HR in 115 ABs at Oklahoma. He had 35 Ks. In 36 ABs against Big 12 competition he struck out 12 times and had 4 hits, only one for extra bases. He made up for it by not hustling anywhere on the field.
I wish the kid luck, but he has burned one of my teams already.
wow…i went to college in jackson, tn and one of our big rivals was freed hardeman…i’ve seen joshua hester pitch(a couple years ago)…he dominated us, but our baseball team at the time was a bad NAIA team…he had pretty good stuff, but i don’t remember how hard he throws
argh. texas finally drafts martinez.
harold martinez to texas
i just realized my post about hester makes it sound like i played for lambuth(my college)…i did not, just watched games(i stopped playing in 7th grade when it became obvious that my strategy of getting walked or HBP every at bat was not going to work due to pitchers improving command)
The X-man! That’s not a bad pick at all right there. Won the MWC Triple Crown for Unlv. This yrs Steve Hill.
erik, if you’re back do you want to take back over?
OK, FGC. Sorry, I’m out. I just wanted to post the video, and I saw the formatting was all wonky. It took me some time to figure out how to fix it, BA has some weird stuff that takes a little messing with, so I figured you wouldn’t mind me straightening it out. Please if you can keep going for a few more rounds, that would be great. I should be ready to take over again in 30 min.
21 picks and only 4 high schoolers….
sounds good. yeah, i didn’t know how to fix that scouting report.
FGC,
There goes a young guy, any chance he’s signable?
I can’t see his video here at work, born in ‘90…wow I feel old.
Did I miss Matt Marquis getting picked by someone?
All this talk about a “boring” day one draft — anyone here remember the ‘91 draft? BA was effusive about how great the Cards’ haul was, starting with Dmitri Young as the 4th overall pick and adding super-toolsy HS kids like Darond Stovall and Basil Shabazz.
And what came of that draft?
Probably the best guy we got, in terms of helping the organization, was Pop Warner, and he never made it to the majors as a player.
I don’t mind boring.
Johnny Bravo!
Great name, Basil Shabazz…and speaking of names, Johnny Bravo! Best name of the draft.
i don’t think marquis has been picked, but vanderbilt commits do not sign.
Johnny Bravo may think he’s pretty, but those are ugly stats.
FGC, if you want you can take a breather. Not much to see after the 20th round, I would think.
Are the scouts seeing something when they watch these players that don’t show up in the stats? There have been quite a few head scratchers.
Bravo is listed at 5′7″ too. Hm, are we missing something here?
So far the Cardinals draft is intriguing. There are quite a few players that I think will be ready for a full season team and a lot of follow players. I think we could see alot of these college players get tested early in Quad Cities, especially the position players.
As long as everyone signs we could see the official end of some AAAA type players to open some slots for promotions. I think you could see Wasdin and the likes get released soon. I personally would like to see Wasdin go and Todd get moved to AAA, Furnish to AA, etc.
Basil Shabazz went to my high school in Arkansas–was a sick football player, took the team to the state title basically by himself. Played RB, defensive secondary, kicker, kick returner….should have played football.
Whatever happened to Basil Shabazz? He was a legend in Little Rock. A complete freak of nature athletically.
how is this for a new quad cities lineup?
1. Kozma SS
2. Peterson RF
3. Wallace 3b
4. Kingrey LF
5. Rivera 1b
6. Vazquez C
7. Pham CF
8. Arburr DH
9. Bolivar 2b
add lynn and gorgen to the piggy back and you have something cooking.
last i had heard shabazz is actually a scout for a major league team. what team i do not know, but i recall seeing his name as the scout who got a player in one of the ba prospect handbooks. you just don’t forget a name like that. he was part of that ‘91 class that everyone thought was going to be stacked with d. young, brian barber and allen watson.
how many rounds are in the draft?
50, but I’m going to stop pretty soon, actually. Probably around round 30-35.
really 50 rounds…how many of the guys in the last 10 rounds actually get into the system and play for the organization that drafts them?
is bruening a draft and follow candidate? he’s a J1 which i assume means he’s a 1 year junior college player…his video looks good and he seems to still be a little projectable as he is tall and lanky…i’m just not sure on the draft and follow rules
i hope we sign leith…lefty’s that throw upper 80’s-low 90’s in high school are golden
Draft and Follow rule is no longer
Mozeliak said on the radio this morning that Wallace would likely go to High-A Palm Beach.
http://sfajacks.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/thomas_kevin00.html
Kevin Thomas
I’m an FHU alumi - go Josh!
I’ve been hearing about him for a couple of years, but I never really expected the Card’s to take him.
I wish him the best.
I looked at the drafts from the last 10 years (for all of the MLB) - only 1.20 players that were drafted in the last 10 rounds have made it to the majors on average; none since 2002 draft. In rounds 31-40, only 3.70 player made it, on average; the last one was from the 2004 draft.
At what point will you know which players actually signed? Is there a web site that lists what they were offered and who took what?
Error on Chris Swauger’s stats. he had 51 bb 35 k this year.
He also was moved up to lead off shortly after the season started due to an injury to the lead off batter. He batted 3rd as a soph. and jr.
He batted .336 in 237 games at The Citadel, setting a school record for triples and ranking second in Citadel history in at-bats, hits, total bases and doubles. His 38 home runs were third on the school’s all-time chart, and he was twice Academic All-American.
Swauger finished his career at The Citadel as only the second player in school history to record 300-plus hits. He also leaves with the school record in triples (16), finished second in doubles (71) and third in runs scored (211) and home runs (38).
he started his freshman year at first base and was selected defensive player of the year. He was moved to LF his soph. year. He did not commit any errors in his senior year in the outfield playing both left and center
I think the Cards got a sleeper in Chris
By the way, Chris also played at Joe Riley Park the home of the Charleston Riverdogs. this is not a hitter friendly park. the wind is always blowing in off the Ashley River.
I agree, he does look like a very nice sleeper. Seems like he has some legit power judging by the videos.
1115 Danny Jimenez - St. Charles North HS
(I accidentally posted this in the wrong thread)
I mentioned the other day about the Short Stop I coached this year. Well, he didn’t get drafted quite as high as we had hoped, but the Florida Marlins eventually picked Barrett Serrato in the 48th round. I have a feeling he’s going to Purdue.
Anyway, I was surprised to notice the Cardinals drafted Serrato’s best friend, Danny Jimenez from St. Charles, IL. I’ve seen Danny pitch once. It was a cool, rainy day about a week and a half ago in the Sectional Semi-final against Wheaton North who just lost today in the State Semi-finals.
Danny (Lefty) has great stuff and can hit mid to upper 80s. He locates well, although he struggled with deep counts the day I saw him even though Wheaton North couldn’t touch him (he left a 0-0 game and as soon as he came out the flood gates opened). He’s a 4 pitch pitcher and can throw any of them for a strike.
He’s kind of skinny but will probably put weight on with age. I suspect he’ll get considerably stronger too, which should help the velocity.
Danny is a good, hard-working kid. The fact that he is such good friends with Barrett Serrato speaks volumes to me. Barrett is the most humble and most talented kid I’ve ever coached and from everything I know, Danny is cut from the same mold.
As far as signabiltiy goes, I don’t know. I know a number i always heard batted around was 100K + 8 semesters. (Honsetly, I can’t think right now where he’s going to college) But I’m not sure he can get that in the 37th round.
Swauger looks like he could be a pretty good sleeper, judging by those videos. His batting stance and swing remind me of Barry Bonds. Not a bad guy to try and imitate at the plate.
Not saying he can hit like Bonds, but that’s who he looks like at the plate.
Ah. i just checked the paper and it looks as though Jimenez is going to go to college.
http://www.kcchronicle.com/blogs/prepskcc/
He’s going to John A. Logan. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that a community college? (I know it’s in Southern Illinois) If so, then he’s probably going since he could then go back into the draft next year as opposed to waiting 3 years.
Erik, I haven’t read through all the comments thoroughly, but has there been any word on The Contest? And could that play a factor in so many small-school picks this year, or at least be cut from the same organizational philosophy?
Just wanted to say really nice work the past couple of days. It’s awesome that there are Cardinals fans out there as dedicated as you guys. You’re really providing a fantastic service for a lot of us.
Thank you.
Mike Stutes should’ve signed with the Cardinals last year.
Dropped from the 9th to the 11th round and missed out on a year of pro development.
Seattle might get a bargain with him, though.
mateodh–I just sent an email to Sig asking him that very question.
speaking of Stutes. Whatever happened to Kyle Russell?
Piece of an article from St Pete Times in FL on Anthony Ferrara, theres also an a few on him in the Tampa tribune.
But Ferrara didn’t have long to wait when the draft resumed Friday morning. Thirteen picks into Day 2, he was selected by the Cardinals in the seventh round with the 215th overall pick.
Ferrara realized that a bicep tendonitis injury, which he spent the past four months trying to prove his was over, following his junior year scared off pro scouts. He had a successful senior season, going 4-4 with a 2.74 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 46 innings.
“It killed me,” Ferrera said of the injury. “As a junior, I was going to be a first-round pick. And this year, Baseball America ranked me 189th. I thought that was high, but they were pretty right on.”
The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder was happy the Cardinals selected him. He didn’t rule out going to USF but was excited about the prospect of turning pro.
“I’m really happy,” he said. “They’re a great organization.”

Bicep Tendonitis sucks, but its not really a serious sign of things to come. Surprised he fell so far in the rankings.
For the small school kids just look them up in Juco or Division 2 schools. Check out there website and you can get alot of info on them. Castellanos was An All American last year with a batting average of .430. Had 22 doubles, 3 triples and 16 homeruns at Belmont Abbey College. This year he batted .390 with 31 doubles (nationally rank 1st in the nation in Division 2)
had again 3 triples and 12 homeruns. NCAA also provides info on the kid when you check his national record. I think he’s pretty good….doesn’t get striked out easily. I’m gonna check the others

9. Chris Swauger, lf, The Citadel ($0 bonus)
Actual selection: (26, 785) to the St. Louis Cardinals
Chris Swauger has enjoyed an outstanding four-year career at The Citadel and is a valuable senior-sign for the Cardinals. He showed good defensive skills at first base as a freshman, but was moved to left-field in 2006. He hits no matter where he plays, however. In a tough pitchers’ park, Swauger hit .360/.485/.603 in 56 games in 2008. He led the Coastal Plains League in home runs in the summer of 2007 and smacked another 10 in 2008. He’s not particularly big (6-foot, 195 pounds), but he can really hit and should tear up minor league pitchers.
