I’m warming up to this pick. I just saw the draft videos, saw the quirkiness and the lack of overall power and thought “tweener”. But my goodness, when someone can get on base 50% of the time he’s gotta be doing something right. No matter what position someone may play, if you can post a high OBP they’ll find a spot for you. And he can run a little bit, and he has an arm. And yes, his park is very suppressive on power.

As I said, I can and probably will flip flop on these guys. I did a complete 180 on Mortensen since his draft day. First impressions can be totally wrong.

I bet one thing, he’ll hit right away and move up the ranks rather fast at least to start.

if peterson can hit close to .300 with 15-20 homers and continue to draw walks you are probably looking at your future right fielder. its not a sexy pick, but the guy has done nothing but hit in his career. he almost hit .340 on the cape last year.

A couple other things of note.

Its a huge ballpark, the ball just dies in the Cali night air and they face some of the best pitching in conference.

Its not that Peterson isnt a good prospect…its just we have 3 or 4 of them already.

Your last point, fewgood, may be as important as any. Peterson is a year and a half younger than many college juniors–like Brett Wallace, for instance–and Peterson has shown a steady increase in both power and patience throughout his career. The kid is on the come. I like the pick.

The increase in strikeouts would bother me if it weren’t accompanied by the spike in both walks AND extra-base hits. Generally speaking, I’d rather draft a high-BB, high-K hitter (as long as he hits for average) than a low-K, low-BB guy.

i was just thinking about shane peterson and how long beach state is considered a bigger pitcher’s park. i just thought i would compare his numbers to some other notable dirtbags.

i don’t know what caused the huge jump in strikeouts this year other than probably trying to hit for more power, but the stats compare very favorably. now i am not saying he will be as good as these two players, but his sophomore season was actually better than longoria’s. he may not have the power of those two, but he had by far the best batting average of the group. we also need to remember that he is only 20 years old.

You guys do not know what u are talking about. Shane can hit. He came to LB as a pitcher and hit so well that the HAD to find a spot in the line up for him. He has been a hitter since he was 14. I would knoew I’ve played against him and with him since I was 13. He competes when he is at the dish and that is what makes a hitter. Your stance doesn’t mean a thing as long as you put the bat on the ball and get hits. The people that make it to the league are the people that consistently get hit. He comes from an area where baseball is what we do. We play baseball and win. Listen to the people that were on one team, trevor cahill(oakland a’s) gavin brooks(ucla) shane peterson(no explaintion) brian kolb(wheaton lead every college in batting average in 2008) kevin couture(usc) and that are just the people who choose the play baseball. But the fact is they all compete and get results no matter what people said about their “limp wrist” or their stance, it doesn’t matter he hits and get results just look at his track record he balls flat out and he will continue to do the same thing in the pros.

I like Shane as a pitcher. Something about the way the ball comes out of his hand the way he kind of flipsit out.

That is the same reason I don’t like him as a hitter he folds his wrist before the swing which seems to me that it would suck up any chance for power.
