Scott Gorgen, RHP, UC Irvine. Another pick I really like. I’ve been a fan of Gorgen for a while. He gets flack for his lack of size, but he’s got good stuff. He’s another sinkerballer, and he has one of the best changeups in this draft. Good pick.

Ive been seearching for negatives on this guy and the only thing i can find is that hes a bit short. Thats it.
3 above average pitches, one being the best change up in the draft. Great pick.
Its not that I dont like Gorgen but what is his upside, dont we have about 20 of him already and where is this LHP we kept hearing about?
I really like this pick also. I hate it when people look for those cookie cutter guys (6ft 4in…) This guy could be a real steal in this round. I think he could be a quick mover with his makeup and stuff. So far 3 pics I really like and 1 i’m so/so on and one i don’t care for.
Thanks again Erik for all of your work today.
the only knock on the guy is his size. three average to plus pitches. sign me up.
Who was the SS that some thought could go in the first round, he was in HS. I cant remember his name. He sucked it up and his stock plumeted. Who is he and is he still avail.
Harold Martinez
Just saw the second part of your question, and yes he’s still available
poorcollegeguy: I hate to keep being negative, but it’s easier to point out problems than than it is to figure out and then spell out what someone’s doing right. Look at the sudden forced deceleration at the end of Gorgen’s motion. That kind of violent stop is a pretty huge negative. It worries me a lot more than size. I’d imagine it’s easy to correct, but he’s already put a lot of strain on the arm doing that all his life.
Bryan Smith just ripped our draft.
What’s up with Bryan Smith? Where’s the upside? Wallace hits like Jim Thome, Jr. Isn’t that upside?
i dont claim to be a pro at this stuff, so i go by what the pros write about these guys. It is correctable and it may have put some strain on his arm, ill admit that, but if those things are the worst things about the guy then im happy. Hes short and has a correctable flaw in delivery.
Gotta grab and upside guy at #155…so I can sleep easy tonight.
Matt Marquis, a HS LHP….something along that line.
I am tired of backend of the rotation RHP’s
Some people get WAY too caught up with what arm a guy throws with.
You get a guy with 3 above average pitches, above average command, and good mound presence at 125 and that’s not a good pick?
I’m 3 for 5 as far as liking the picks.
Sickels had Gorgen going in the supplemental round in his mock draft….
i heard Marquis really impressed in a personal workout a while back, i wouldnt be surprised if thats who they took. I thought they were looking at him as an outfielder though. I may be mistaken.
I like this pick too.
Doing a great job, Erik. Really enjoying the analysis here.
I can’t believe it… I’m a student here at UC Irvine, and probably one of the only Cards fans here. I’ve seen him play a couple times this year. He exemplifies the typical Irvine player with some little thing about him that turns off the big name colleges, but he has dominated here, and has been a joy to watch. He was on that Cinderella team last year that made it deep into the College World Series, and this year they’re in the Super Regionals once again. Compared to more conventionally star-studded teams like Long Beach St, us Anteaters have shown the ability to play together as a team, instead of each man out there for himself.
I frankly couldn’t believe it when I saw the Cardinals had drafted him, and I’m going to be rooting for him big-time to make it to St. Louis.
Im also 3-5, Lynn and Peterson. Meh.
Of all the draft “experts,” Sickels is the guy I respect least. That said, I’m all for getting Gorgen signed and called up this week if that’s what it takes to get Parisi out of the rotation.
Same here
Lynn just doesn’t do much for me, especially with DeVall going right after him.
Peterson is a corner OFer minus power or speed. Hard to get excited about that.
Other than that, I’m good with all the other picks.
Stros draft Dave Duncan 152
Im happy i have something else to do tonight besides watch the ball game. Did anyone predict that Parisi would get lit up in a major league rotation? No? Nobody?
I played ball with scotty basically my whole life…What he lacks in size he overcomes in heart. He and his twin brother matt will get to the big show before you know it.
