• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

And at 59 the Cardinals pick…

Shane Peterson, OF/1B Long Beach….Still no Melville. Something is up…even the Dodgers passed on him, who seem to be pretty heavy on HS players from Missouri.

Scouting report per BA:

Peterson is the top prospect on a talent-laden Long Beach State squad which could have six players drafted in the first 10 rounds. Peterson’s strong, mature body and outstanding hitting performance this year, following up an excellent showing in the Cape Cod League last summer, should make him the first Dirtbag drafted. One of the most versatile players in the nation, the lefthanded Peterson has the ability to play first, pitch (90 mph off the mound) or hold down a corner outfield spot. He’s above-average defensively at first but should run enough (though he’s below-average) to hold down a corner outfield spot. Peterson’s hitting mechanics are a bit out of the ordinary, as he’s a front-foot hitter, but he generates excellent bat speed and has a high finish that helps give him loft power. An admirably consistent hitter, Peterson can hammer the ball to all fields, and has cleared the deep center-field fence at Blair Field, one of the stingiest D-1 hitter’s parks in the country. Peterson slumps only when he chases the high inside fastball, or when he becomes too pull oriented and flies his head and front side open. Statistically-inclined clubs will jump on Peterson, who was leading the Big West Conference in on-base percentage (.495) and ranked second in slugging. While not a prospect on the level of recent Long Beach State hitters like Troy Tulowitzki and Evan Longoria, Peterson is a legitimate first-two-rounds candidate and has enough bat to be a regular at a corner position.

Interesting pick, gotta love the OBP. More in a bit.

  1. Hopefully the Cardinals really think these first 2 position players picked can play decently somewhere other than 1st.

  2. Looks like he’s a little undersized and hasn’t shown much game power. Not crazy about this pick, but it’s a pretty shallow draft so I don’t know how down on it you can be.

  3. Hmmmm…..ok

  4. schmaker clone in my opinon…no power wth aluminum bats…what the hell

  5. he also strikes out a ton

  6. sounds more like Jon Jay to me…

  7. hmmm…its amazing how different these scouting reports can be…i just read another one that makes him sound like a legit corner of that will hit 15-20 hrs with a .300 avg…its crazy

kinda wish we had taken spruill here…he’s gonna throw hard

  8. I don’t think the Melville slide is too surprising. He was a candidate to go early because of his junior year. As a senior, he probably wasn’t even a fringe first rounder, and yet he wanted top-half-of-the-first-round money. If someone decides he’s worth a few million dollars, they’ll be able to get him much later.

  9. Some scouting reports really are pretty lousy.

Melville could have cut a deal, but has to be after 10th round for larger money. MLB won’t approve milions of bucks in a slot worth much less than that.

  10. seems like the cards will never take someone with upside or power arms….always college guys

  11. ive read several reports and some pump him up and others drag him through the mud, i hope the cards know what they are doing

  12. Which will be on eof the large market clubs. ie Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Tigers, Angels, Dodgers, etc.

  13. The funky swing worries me, but it sounds like we got good value for the pick. I’m happy.

The cards are taking some guys that could be real power threats, I think that is a system need.

  14. Peterson has never hit for power before, so you’re getting way ahead of yourself in assuming that he’s going to suddenly start when he moves to wooden bats.

  15. Melville will be at UNC next season. Book it.
