• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Daily Farm Report - 5/29/08

Derrick Goold posted the third and final installment in his “PostCards with Luhnow” series today. Also, the guys at Major League Jerk posted a first round mock draft. They’ve got the Cardinals taking high school first baseman Eric Hosmer. That would certainly be a departure for the Cardinals.

Anyway, the system went 3-2 on the night - all the details are after the jump.

Memphis 4, Iowa 5

  • Colby Rasmus was moved back up to the #2 slot in the lineup and he responded by going 2-5 with a stolen base. His average is over the Mendoza line at .202.
  • Joe Mather also went 2-5 with a double and Bryan Anderson was 2-3 with a walk.
  • The starter was Jaime Garcia and he went six strong innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out three.
  • Jason Motte pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one before Ron Flores and John Wasdin combined to blow the game in the eighth inning by giving up three runs on three hits (Wasdin surrendered two gopher balls).

San Antonio 7, Springfield 4

  • Shane Robinson went 2-5 with a stolen base.
  • Jon Jay went 2-4 with a homerun and Isaias Garcia hit a pinch hit homer in his only at bat.
  • Steve Hill got the start at catcher and had no errors or passed balls.
  • Tyler Herron had a rough outing, giving up five runs in five innings. He gave up eight hits and two walks while throwing a wild pitch and striking out three.
  • Zach Zuercher pitched a scoreless inning, Scott Vander Weg gave up one run in his first inning of work since coming off of the steroids suspension and Jon Mikrut gave up a run in his two innings of work.

Palm Beach 3, Jupiter 2

  • Antonio DeJesus, Brian Cartie and Daniel Descalso all went 1-3; Cartie doubled.
  • Luke Gorsett was 2-4 with a double.
  • My Dad’s favorite pitcher, Brandon Dickson, got the victory by going six strong innings. He gave up one run on three hits and two walks and he struck out six.
  • Josh Dew finished up the evening with two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out two.

Burlington 0, Quad Cities 6

  • The pitching was the story tonight as Mark Diapoules gave up only three hits and one walk over the first five innings and Nick Additon did not allow a hit over the final four frames. Diapoules struck out five and Additon struck out four while walking two.
  • Mike Folli provided the power, going 2-4 and hitting a three run homerun.
  • Nicholas Peoples went 2-4 in his first action of the season and Tommy Pham went 2-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
  • Charles Kingrey was 2-4 with a double.
  • Luis De La Cruz was 0-4, but he threw out both runners that tried to steal against him.

VSL Cardinals 6, VSL Rays 2

  • The hitting line of the night goes to Alberto Rivero, who went 1-4 with a three run homer. The team only mustered three hits all game, but managed six runs.
  • The pitching line of the night goes to Fernando Cedeno, who pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out one.

  1. Taking things (somewhat) out of context from Luhnow —

“Also, remember that major league free agents are expensive for a reason. They have already demonstrated that they can perform at the highest level. That is worth a significant amount.”

Free agents are expensive because teams incorrectly value veteran experience as an asset unto itself rather than simply a different playing level to evaluate production on. This is why teams sign Miguel Cairo, Ray King, Horacio Ramirez, etc. I don’t think Luhnow intended to suggest that playing in the bigs previously adds dollars to a contract in and of itself but if he did, I’d have to vehemently object to it.

  2. Horacio Ramirez has never been a free agent, has he?

I don’t know that teams value MLB experience as “an asset unto itself.” Maybe some do think that way, but I bet most front office people understand that performance at the highest levels reduces the uncertainty in expected performance. And that is actually worth something, as those executives are in the business of risk management.

Also, the reality is that a typical GM could set aside $15M for draft picks and international prospects, but if he does that in lieu of signing the veteran utility player and average innings eater that the manager needs right now, those young players won’t be ready to help out until long after the GM is fired.

  3. Don’t know if this has been posted but Springfield is on television (FSC) in rebroadcast of Texas League action vs Corpus Cristi.

Just a heads up. Check your listings.

  4. This is the Springfield game that is currently on my television, it will be rebroadcast at 6 am:

  5. Sounds like Mather is heading to St. Louis, though (if true) I’m sure he’s keeping his fingers crossed he won’t get a 2nd call this time around.

  6. Horacio Ramirez was released by the Mariners. He became a free agent in the sense that no team controlled his rights during this season and the Royals signed him to a minor league contract.

  7. No way the Cards draft Hosmer. They would be straying from their typical model, and if they’re not going to pop the slot money for an arm like Porcello, they’re certainly not going to do it for a h.s. bat who is challenged athletically.

  8. Jose Martinez with another RBI, now up to 37. I don’t care if it is a worthless stat, somebody on the team needs to drive in the runs, and Jose’s done it. I’ll take a 2B/SS with 80 RBI and crappy saberstats any day.

  9. Anybody have a good career comparison for Joe Mather? Anyone?

I know Jason Bay is as good as we could hope for, but it sounds about right considering Bay didn’t get full-time MLB work until he was 25. Who else had minor league break-out years in their age 24-25 years?

So we don’t get too excited and keep things in perspective, who would be a good comparison on the low-end of the spectrum?

  10. Sounds like Mather is heading to St. Louis, though (if true) I’m sure he’s keeping his fingers crossed he won’t get a 2nd call this time around.

    What is this based on?

  11. There’s a Post-Dispatch article now stating that Chris Duncan is being sent down and Joe Mather is getting the call.
