Daily Farm Report - 5/3/2008

The organization went 3-1 on the evening, with a nasty blowout against Springfield being the bad news of the evening. Congrats to Jaime Garcia, his promotion to AAA is the big news of the day. One of my other favorite pitchers, Clayton Mortensen, struggled for his second consecutive start. It may be an overreaction on my part, but I am starting to wonder if there isn’t something wrong with him - like there was with Adam Ottavino.

All the details from the day’s action are after the jump.

Colorado Springs 5, Memphis 6

  • Colby did not start tonight, but was walked intentionally in a pinch hitting appearance.
  • Perhaps Bryan Anderson is starting to adjust to AAA. He went 2-3 with an rbi and a run scored and he gunned down Lance Nix attempting to steal second (Nix had successfully stolen second earlier in the game off of Anderson).
  • Joe Mather went 1-2 with a double and a pair of walks.
  • Nick Stavinoha had a pair of doubles in going 2-4 with two rbi.
  • Brian Barden went 3-5 with a double and two rbi.
  • Hugo Castellanos was a bit of a punching bag in his start tonight: he allowed five earned runs in six innings on seven hits and four walks. He did strike out seven, though.
  • Ron Flores got the win for his two scoreless innings and Chris Perez secured the save, navigating around two walks by striking out the side in the ninth.

Arkansas 10, Springfield 4

  • Clayton Mortensen had his second rough outing in a row. He went 4.1 innings and gave up six earned runs on eight hits and five walks. He was touched for two bombs and did not strike anyone out.
  • Allen Craig continued his recent hot streak, going 2-5.
  • The big rbi man was Mark Shorey, who went 2-4 with a double and drove in three.
  • Luke Gorsett went 1-2 with a double and a walk, and Brandon Yarbrough went 1-2 with a double and two walks.
  • Josh Dew continued his struggles since his promotion to AA, he worked an inning and gave up two runs on five hits.

Palm Beach 5, Sarasota 4

  • Man, Myth and Legend Steve Hill played first base today and hit a two run homer in the first inning. He finished 2-5 on the day.
  • Donovan Solano went 3-4 with an rbi and a stolen base, Daniel Descalso went 1-4 with an rbi and a walk, and David Carpenter went 1-3 with an rbi.
  • Jess Todd got the start and lasted three innings. He only gave up one run on two walks and three hits. He struck out four.
  • The piggybacker was Kyle Sadlowski. He went 3.1 innings and gave up three runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out three.
  • Francisco Samuel got the win for pitching the ninth inning. He somehow failed to give up a run even though he walked three, gave up a hit and struck out two. This was accomplished by a walk, a K/CS double play, a walk, a single, a walk and finally another strikout. Never a dull moment.
  • Palm Beach got the walk off victory due to a Isaias Garcia walk with two outs in the ninth. He was pinch run for by Oliver Marmol, who stole second. Then Donovan Solano singled in Marmol to win the game.

Quad Cities 5, West Michigan 3

  • Pete Kozma went 1-5 with a double.
  • Domnit Bolivar had a nice night, going 2-5 with a double, a triple and two rbi.
  • Andrew Brown and catcher Paul Vasquez got the other two rbi, with Brown going 2-5 and Vasquez going 2-4 with a double.
  • Justin Roberson and Jose Garcia each had two hits, with Roberson adding a walk to his 2-3 night, while Garcia went 2-4.
  • Thomas Eager pitched four scoreless innings, giving up only a hit, three walks and a HBP to go along with his lone strikeout.
  • Eduardo Sanchez got credited with the win, despite having a rough outing. He went three innings and gave up three earned runs on three hits, two walks and a HBP. He struck out a pair.
  • Cardoza Tucker picked up the save, going two scoreless innings, giving up only one hit.

  1. At one point is Nick Stavinhoha going to be considered in the same league as Joe Mather in terms of outfield prospect status?

  2. Mather is much more athletic than Stavinoha. Mather can run, cover ground in the OF, has a strong arm, etc. Nick (and also Cody Haerther) are stiffs in the OF.

  3. If you remnove the word “springs” from your spellcheck, you will catch the easily made “Palm Springs” error.

  4. I don’t think Stavinoha can play any other positions where Mather is seen
as being a utility infielder (at the corners, at least).

With so many outfielders above and below AAA Memphis (Ank, Duncan, Skip, Ludwick, Barton, Jon Jay, and the newest prospect Shane Robinson), I don’t know where the Cards can keep putting all these OF’s. It is nice to have some depth, though, in case of injury.

I would probably try to package some of these guys in a trade later in the season. Thompson, Dunc, Reyes, Anderson, and then some of these other OF’s could be used in a trade.

  5. so im a little worried that someone on the pitching staff is hurt because Mike Parisi is in town. I havnt heard anything yet but maybe its because there about to trade reyes. Either way im eager to find out.
