Way to go, Joe Mather. Joe’s career path is pretty fascinating when you look at it. Drafted out of high school in 2001 in the 3rd round, scouts thought Mather was raw but also that he could hit for power down the road. I’m not sure they thought it would be this long down the [...]

There have been several mock-ups of the upcoming draft, and all have their plusses and minuses as the writers of those mocks may or may not be completely familiar with what a team’s drafting habits are. Recently, I’ve also got to participate in a forum participant mock draft at the Project Prospect, and while it [...]

Derrick Goold posted the third and final installment in his “PostCards with Luhnow” series today. Also, the guys at Major League Jerk posted a first round mock draft. They’ve got the Cardinals taking high school first baseman Eric Hosmer. That would certainly be a departure for the Cardinals.
Anyway, the system went 3-2 on the night - [...]

Baseball America has a profile of Tim Melville as the top story on their draft page (subscription only). He has not had the greatest season he could have hoped for, which has been partially blamed on the weather in the midwest and on a fluke injury where he was struck in the eye by a [...]

Cardinals catcher Bryan Anderson has hit at every stop of his minor league career, including a torrid first month of this season that earned him a promotion to AAA. Bryan was drafted out of high school in the fourth round in 2005 and he was a mid-season and post-season all star for the Texas League in 2007 [...]

DG continues his series of PostCards with Luhnow, excellent stuff all around. Our own fewgoodcards questioned Luhnow about taking college arms with questionable control (Shooter Hunt).
Q: Jeff, how much do you guys look into walks when looking at a college pitcher? It seems like the Cardinals have taken a lot of guys in recent years [...]

Sorry I was a day late, but I am sure I wasn’t the only one that had a busy weekend. Memorial day weekend is usually conference tournament weekend, and that means some guys played a lot more games that usual and others were done pretty quickly. Conor Gillaspie used the MVC tourny to pad his [...]

Joe Mather gets a call to the big leagues. Unfortunately, it’s the same call the Chris Perez got initially — one that’s rescinded a little while later. That’s not a dig at the Cardinal’s front office but kudos to Mather for not getting too bummed about it or at least not letting it [...]

I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the prospects currently in the Cardinals system and that the Cardinals have developed (or failed to develop) over the past five years or so on a position-by-position basis to take a closer look at the strengths and weaknesses of the system. The first position [...]

Pop Warner lets his batters swing at 3-0 pitches without reaming them once they get to the dugout.
Couple of posts from Matthew Leach, the Cardinals beat reporter for their mlb.com website. The first is that there’s apparently no rush to get Mather up to the big leagues, in part because they’re having trouble getting [...]

Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus delves into the thought processes for each of the first twelve teams picking in the draft. While it is somewhat disappointing that he stopped just short of the Cardinals (I guess he had to stop somewhere), it is still interesting to see what he believes each of the teams picking [...]
