• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Daily Farm Report 4/29/08

Dyar Miller is talking about stretching (or abusing, whichever term you prefer) his pitchers up to 120 pitches per start. Bad idea jeans. I honestly haven’t looked into Pitcher Abuse Points and their merits that thoroughly, but from what I understand the general rule of thumb is to not let pitcher that’s 20-22 years old throw more then 105 pitches on average per start. For what it’s worth, Jaime Garcia is 21, Ottavino 22, Mortensen and Walters are both 23. My initial reaction was an internal scream, particularly when thinking about Garcia.

Bryan Anderson was promoted to AAA. Good for him, he’s definitely deserving. In yesterday’s Three Up, Three Down I discussed how Anderson’s coming along in all phases of his game, not just hitting.

The farm goes 1 for 3, with Palm Beach taking a day off.

Memphis 7, Salt Lake 9

  • Mike Parisi got beat up rather mercilessly. It took him 96 pitches to get through 4 innings, and he allowed 7 runs on 10 hits and 4 walks. 4 of the hits he allowed were doubles, one was a HR. He struck out 5.
  • Matt Scherer and Kelvin Jimenez combined for 3.2 scoreless.
  • FR favorite Mark Worrell was the goat, allowing 2 runs in the 9th. He walked 1, allowed 2 hits and struck out 1. He threw 2 wild pitches.
  • Colby Rasmus went 1 for 4 with a walk and 2 SB.
  • Joe Mather went 2 for 4 with a double and a BB.
  • The Quad A’ers had decent nights. Josh Phelps snapped out of his funk, going 2 for 4 with a walk. D’Angelo Jimenez doubled, homered and drove in 3 runs. Rico Washington went 2 for 5.
  • Cody Haerther doubled for his only hit in 5 at bats.
  • Bryan Anderson went 0 for 3 in his AAA debut, walking and striking out. He caught our old friend Terry Evans trying to steal third.

Springfield 5, NW Ark 4

  • Shane Robinson went 1 for 3 with a walk and hit a game-winning sac fly.
  • Jon Jay continues his tear, going 2 for 4 and stealing his third base of the season.
  • Allen Craig went 2 for 4.
  • Mark Shorey went 1 for 4 with a double and 2 K’s. His double came in the 9th and he scored the winning run.
  • Tyler Greene went 2 for 3 with a HR and a CS. He also had the sacrifice bunt that moved Mark Shorey to third, setting the table for Robinson’s heroics.
  • Mark Hamilton went 0 for 2 with 2 BB.
  • P.J. Walters was an out away from pitching a complete game. He allowed 4 runs on 4 hits (including a HR) and 2 walks, striking out 9. He threw 99 total pitches, 67 for strikes. He was charged with 2 wild pitches, which seems odd for him. New catcher issues?
  • Fernando Salas vultured P.J.’s W by recording the games final out. That’s right. 1 out=Win. Silly baseball stats.

Palm Beach had the day off.

Quad Cities 1, Lansing 3

  • Pete Kozma went 1 for 4 and was caught stealing. He was also part of three double plays, making him Shaun Garceau’s and Brian Broderick’s best friend because…
  • …Broderick and Garceau allowed 7 hits each, but only 3 of the hitters scored. Broderick was charged with 2 ER, Garceau 1. Shaun had the only 2 K’s and neither pitcher walked a man. Broderick induced 9 groundouts.
  • The Swing stranded their fair share of men on base themselves, 7 to be exact.
  • Adron Chambers went 0 for 2 but took 2 walks.
  • Charlie Kingrey doubled for the team’s only XBH.
  • Matt Arburr and Osvaldo Morales both went 2 for 4. Morales is hitting .389/.421/.611 in 18 at bats so far for QC.
  • D’Marcus Ingram went 0 for 3 to drop him to .095 since being promoted.
  • The loss snaps the currently homeless River Bandits 6 game win streak.

  1. Mark Hamilton’s walk rate is up 50% compared to last year. Crazy.

  2. I was at the Memphis game tonight. Parisi - good velocity, poor location. Scherer just the opposite. Jimenez’ HR was opposite field and went 326′. Nothing to get excited about. Anderson also gunned out Evans trying to steal 3rd. Rico Washington had time to check his watch and order pizza before Evans arrived. Okay, I’m kidding. About the pizza. Mather made a Webgem diving catch. Really nice play. VERY impressed with Rasmus. Smooth and speedy. One of the quickest bats I’ve ever seen. Pulled a 93 mph heater into the visitors’ dugout! Had a nice bunt single in the 8th. The last of his 2 SB’s, he didn’t even get a good jump - just turned on the jets. Really covers a lot of ground in CF with an Edmondsesque glide. Haerther is not a good OF. Worrell IS really funky. He deserved a better fate. Anderson had a PB, Barden and Jimenez didn’t turn a double play, and Mather turned a 1B into a 2B - all in the 9th.

  3. i don’t think it was a passed ball, anderson lunged out after it as far as he could and it tipped off the end of the glove. i don’t think he could have caught it. worrell was really wild last night.

  4. Mark Hamilton has more walks in his last 3 games then he has had the rest of the season.

  5. It looks to me like Miller is sticking to the pitcher abuse points precisely. If it is true that it recommends an _average_ of no more than 105 pitches, then Miller’s proposed system is in complete agreement. 120 pitches for three games and no more than 100 for the forth game averages out to 105.

I am not familiar with the pitcher abuse point system and am not defending it or miller, just saying that there is no discrepency.

  6. I don’t know what to make of this pitching system. They piggyback through QC and PB and then are allowed to throw up to 120 pitches in Springfield and Memphis. I start to get a little concerned when the MLB pitchers are throwing 120 much less some 21 year old prospect.

I may just sit on the fence on this one for a bit. I want to throw it under the bus but it’s obviously something the front office believes in right now. If prospects start going down after several consecutive high pitch count games. . . well, my pitchfork & torch is always handy.

  7. Pitch Count- Seems to be a lot of discussiong about this as of late. My take is that each pitcher needs to be handled individually. I don’t think all pitchers should be subject to the same pitch count.

Look guys like Maddux, Dice K, and Livan Hernandez have rubber arms and can just throw all day, where as some guys just have arm issues and fatigue easier.

I don’t think pitchers should be held to 100 pitch counts if they are capable of throwing 125-130 pitches it’s stupid and it stops their development. However if a guy can only handle 80 pitches I think it’s stupid to extend them.

The issue is many of these young guys 21-23 is the average AA age? Lots have been born into the era of pitch counts when growing up and they have yet to really develope complete arm stamina.

Who knows it’s always a tough call when dealing with the human body, it just breaks down for no reason from time to time.

  8. The River Bandits game tonight is being played here in Iowa City. I’ll head over after work and get my first look at Ingram. Their opponent is the Blue Jays’ affiliate and has Kevin Ahrens, Justin Jackson, and John Tolisano on their team. I’ll write a few thoughts tonight after the game…

  9. looking forward to it, walt

  10. walddub or erik-

What time is the game? I live in the Iowa City area.

  11. IC: the Quad Cities website says 6:00

  12. Yep, 6PM at the Iowa Hawkeye baseball field…across from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

  13. while i’d love to be there any other day, i’m scheduled to usher at my church.
