Daily Farm Report 4/26/08

Here’s an article about Tony Cruz and catching. I broke my finger (pinkie finger - my favorite finger) today so I’m struggling to type a bit. (Hence the short intro.)
Let’s get straight to the DFR. The system goes 3-for-5 tonight and the winners aren’t who you’d guess.
- Nick Stavinoha goes 2-for-4 with a double.
- Colby Rasmus goes 0-for-4 with an error.
- Jarret Hoffpauir goes 0-for-3 with a walk.
- John Wasdin goes 6 innings allowing 8 hits including 2 HRs. He allowed 4 ER and struck out 2.
- Matthew Scherer, just promoted to AAA, struck out 1 and walked 1 in 2 scoreless innings.
- Shane Robinson goes 3-for-4 with a triple and a walk.
- Bryan Anderson continues to rake going 3-for-5 with a double and 4 RBI.
- Mark Hamilton gets a golden sombrero.

- Jon Jay goes 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
- Adam Daniels makes his return but it’s mediocre at best. He goes 3.2 innings allowing 2 hits, 1 ER and 2 walks against 3 Ks.
- After Cory Rauschenberger allows 2 runs, Nick Webber, Josh Dew and Bob Zimmerman combine for 4 shutout innings.
- Daryl Jones goes 2-for-3.
- David Jones goes 1-for-3 with a bomb.
- Not a good night for the PB pitching corps. Brad Furnish goes 2 innings allowing 5 hits, 2 BBs and 1 K for 3 ER. Kenny Maiques followed with 2 innings allowing 2 hits and 1 walk for 3 runs (1 ER).
- Mark McCormick follow with 3 innings, 3 hits, 1 BB and 1 K for 3 runs. Francisco Samuel finished the game striking out 2 in a scoreless inning.
Quad Cities 6, Great Lakes 4 (Game 1: 7 innings)
- Pete Kozma goes 3-for-3 with a walk.
- 1B Andrew Brown goes 2-for-4 with a HR.
- Nick Additon has another shaky outing going 3.2 innings. 6 hits, 2 walks and 2Ks for 2 earned runs is not exactly how he started out the season. It would be nice to see him put up some zeros after struggling the last few starts.
Quad Cities 4, Great Lakes 0 (Game 2: 7 innings)
- Thankfully the pitching was excellent as the offense only garnered 1 XBH and 5 singles (plus 4 walks).
- Mark Diapolous struck out 7 against 2 hits and 2 walks.
- Justin Fiske picked up his first save with 2 innings of no hit 4 K ball.

Colby not only performed badly tonight, he looked bad. I mean, even off. He consistently seemed to swing under the ball. And after his error, he through about 40 ft straight into the ground. If not for the guy already advancing, it’d've been potential for another error.
The entire lineup was utterly lackluster, and Wasdin was serviceable at best. Thoroughly underwhelming.
One positive for Rasmus is that his BABIP is extremely low so hopefully part of his problem is that he’s hitting onto some tough luck.
Nice to see Nick Webber having a little bit of success, at least. He was still a huge overdraft, but maybe he can pitch well and fill in one of those marginal roles in the bullpen for the big club in the next year or two. At the very least, if he continues to have success, he’s just the sort of toss in relief arm that helps to get deals done.
Anderson has a weird line this year. He’s absolutely tearing the cover off the ball, even hitting for some real power, but almost no walks whatsoever. I have to wonder if it’s a function of him not being patient, or if teams are just throwing him pitches too good to let go. Very odd, and I wonder if anyone here has seen much of him and has any insights?
And Pete Kozma- wow. The kid just doesn’t stop, does he? I fear the fall, when it comes, will be swift and crushing, only due to the heights he currently occupies, but for now, kid’s looking like he should be a top 100 prospect next year, easy.
One more thing- from the shameless self promotion department, I write a Cards blog for the Riverfront Times, and I recently put up my mock draft. I went 1-15, but it’s split up into three pieces to keep it from getting too long to read. If anybody’s interested, head over and check it out. I’d really appreciate some feedback.
Linkage
Shoot, I just looked and only the first two sections are up. My editor hasn’t put up the last section, containing picks 11-15, but my invitation still stands. Spoiler alert: I have the Cards taking Melville at 13. I can’t tell if that’s really what I think they’ll do, or if it’s just what I want them to do, but either way, it’s what I went with.
Apologies for the threadjack.
Yawn, Kozma with another ho-hum day.
howd you break the finger?
I punched the ground.
(Edit: Good Lord, that makes me seem like a dumb@$$ after reading that. There’s a story behind it but needless to say someone had gone through the process of making me exceedingly angry — not an easy thing to do — and I was attempting to vent.)
Red Baron–I really, really liked your series so far, was going to cross ref it once the 11-15 go up. I had no idea that it was you, you were so…less rambl-y
I didn’t know you had it in ya.
Oh, and thanks for plugging FR when given the chance.
rb, i like your top 5 as that is the exact same as mine, but i don’t think there is any way the reds take hosmer. they have votto as you mentioned, but jocketty is now their GM and he doesn’t hand out the kind of bonus in the draft that it will take to sign hosmer. if they want a hitter, i think it is gordon beckham.
i have also had alonso going to the marlins for a long time, but i am starting to think they will take smoak. i haven’t heard of him asking for over slot, and i think he has established himself as clearly better than alonso at this point. it may be hard to pass on the local guy, but i think the talent difference may be too great.
Was at the Springfield Cards game last night. Not quite sure why Daniels was pulled early, as nothing was announced re: an injury. He wasn’t particularly sharp, but had only given up 2 hits and wasn’t in a great deal of trouble when he was pulled.
Robinson looked good… he was smaller than I expected. Anderson looked pretty decent behind the plate, although I didn’t get to see him trying to throw out a runner. At the plate he worked the pitchers and seemed to have a real approach with his at-bats. He took good swings against both rightys and leftys, and drove the ball. His three run double was a rope.
Erik- yes, yes. Witty today, aren’t we?
I will admit, I’ve tried very hard to be a bit more to the point over there than I have been in the past at VEB and the comment section ’round here.
Thanks for the compliment on the mock; I’m pretty happy with the way it came out.
AZ-So you pulled a Julian Tavarez, eh? Do we need to put you on the DL?
I’d prefer a John Rocker comparison but, for all intensive purposes, yes. Thankfully there wasn’t a bullpen phone around.
Selfish request for the DFR…
Is there any way you could add the team’s updated W-L record next to the score of each game?
Sorry for being a pain…
Any updates on Freese?
Good to see Scherer promoted. He’s ready for AAA as many of those AAA pitchers are ready for the big time.
AZ,
next time make sure you have a puppy to kick around.
GO CARDS!!!
