• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

College Monday wrap-up 4/21

The wrap is back with some familiar names. Gordon Beckham and Buster Posey continue to mash while Yonder Alonso and Justin Smoak are heating up at the right time. Shooter Hunt showed that he might just have a clue where the ball is going, but Christian Friedrich missed his scheduled start this weekend. I’ll try and find out what is up with that. Check out the rest of this week’s top performers inside.

  1. Wow, there’s ANOTHER Chris Carpenter on our draft board? How can we not take him?

  2. The key is to let the blue jays draft him and then snatch him away before he achieves greatness.

  3. the guys at saberscouting have their mockdrafts. one of the guys has melville to the cards. the other author has brett wallace. both i think are wrong. wallace is a DH waiting to happen, and melville i think goes to UNC, i’ve heard a lot about his velocity being down. he hasn’t exactly dominated like some thought he would

  4. i wouldn’t be so quick to move wallace to DH. sure he probably won’t stick at third, but he is actually a pretty good athlete and i think he will be a pretty good defensive first baseman. of course that doesn’t really help the cardinals, but that guy sure can hit. if some of the other top college guys are gone i could see the A’s grabbing him at 12, but i don’t think he is an option for the cardinals at 13.

btw, there is currently a community mock draft over at minorleagueball.com and the cardinals are on the clock. buster posey currently is edging out shooter hunt in the voting. i don’t think posey has a chance of falling to us, but for some reason most of the people over there don’t like him.

  5. I went to the Memphis v Round Rock game tonight and despite the fact that the team got good hard drives, they ended up in mitts rather then grass. It can be seen in the 9 hits and

But it looks like Colby is back, sailing a ball to deep right field and into a pool area (where a large man went after it, thinking his 15 minutes should happen at a minor league game in Round Rock, TX)

No pics from me, but I can certainly support that Hoff has no business staying in AAA at this point. He even dug a ball from short left and almost beat the runner. No way T-Rex Arms aka Miles could have even made the play close

I guess my only complaint is that the future birds kept the bat on their shoulders too much when it counted, with Hoff, Ras and Freese wiffing twice each

It was double bobblehead day feature Bagwell and Biggio but all the heads looked like Marti.

  6. went and checked out that mock and i think they are both over-rating melville by a lot.

  7. thanks for the report berk. it sure looks like colby is starting to heat up a little as he is 7 for his last 21 with a double, homer, and 2 walks. hopefully he can keep it going.

  8. T-Rex arms. Heh, good one.

I remember getting excited about the FIRST Cris Carpenter…never really panned out.

I really, really hope that we get into another Porcello-type situation in the draft, and that this is the year that the Cards feel like they can start biting again.

In some ways, it makes sense - they shelled out a lot for high-priced guys that flamed out there in the late 90’s/early 2000s, and it may just be a case where they decided to make sure they could prove they knew what they were doing in the draft before gambling with the big bills again. 2005, 2006, and 2007 are looking a lot better than prior years (I don’t think that is just the rosy tint of Shiny New Toy syndrome), and perhaps Cards owners will start to feel more comfortable supporting Luhnow’s higher-priced recommendations.

So who would be likely to “fall” based on slot concerns….Melville? Scheppers? One of the Beckhams?
