River Bandits roster revealed
“Robble, robble.”
The official River Bandits site has announced it’s opening day 2008 roster. Here it is:
C-Luis De La Cruz, David Carpenter
1B-Andrew Brown, Charlie Pelt
2B-Jose Garcia, Matt Folli
3B-Matt Arburr
SS-Pete Kozma, Domnit Bolivar
OF-Adron Chambers, Beau Riportella, Charlie Kingrey, Justin Roberson
They will be using the tandem system this year again.
P-Thomas Eager, Shaun Garceau, Blake King, Nicholas Additon, Andres Rosales, Brian Broderick, Wayne Daman, Jonathan Stambaugh, Cardoza Tucker, Pete Parise, Justin Fiske, Fransisco Samuel.
It’s low A, so it’s hard to really make an predictions but I have to admit at first blush that the lineup might be hard pressed to score a lot of runs. Kozma obviously makes them interesting. So does the GCL’s top catcher from last season Luis De La Cruz. Beau Riportella has 2 tools, speed and a cool name. We also found out last season that he has a gang of groupies.Chambers also is another speedy, athletic type. Brown was a New York Penn League All Star, for what it’s worth. He’s 23. Big Matt Arburr had an amazing spring, he and Brown should provide the power. I’m most disappointed not to see D’Marcus Ingram, I’d be shocked if he jumped all the way to Palm Beach. Of course, a lot can change over the next few weeks.
As for the rotation, it looks like Kopp and Todd will both jump up to A+. Garceau is a repeat, and a favorite of mine. He has a very good fastball, a curve and a change but tired in the 2nd half. King we’ve seen too, and he’ll be working on his command. Rosales and Additon are a couple of interesting sleepers. Rosales had 60 K’s to 8 BB in 57 innings between the GCL and the Appy. He’s a rail thin and lanky sinker/slider guy. Additon also put up impressive numbers, striking out 71 to 13 walks over 61 innings between JC and Batavia. He’s a lefty, and one of the Cardinals last signed draft and follows. I would assume Samuel will be the team’s closer.
It’s be tough for the team to repeat it’s kind of success last year in the 1st half, but there are some interesting names to watch. The average age of the team is 21.5.

d’marcus ingram not making the roster is definitely a disappointment.
dont think arburr is playing 3b @ 6′4 260. I would say 1b
I’d say so, Rolen is listed at 6′4 - 240
I really like the pitching staff, but I agree that other than Kozma and De La Cruz (and maybe Brown and Riportella) there doesn’t seem to be much on the offensive/fielding side.
Also I don’t know much about Kingrey, so hopefully he can be a pleasant surprise.
With a good few weeks of extended ST, i think we’ll see Ryde Rodriguez, Deryk Hooker and Ingram
Yes, Andres Rosales! My man-crush sleeper.
I agree with erik, this line-up has a few place holders in the position players. After extended spring training more players will show up and the team will reevaluate the assignments to the A-ball teams…
I am planning on seeing this team a couple times this year when they com to Kane County. I was wondering though, it is mentioned that the average age is 21.5, is that young or old? What is the average age for a midwest leauge team.
I’ll be watching Rosales & Kozma till someone else makes a case for themselves to be watched…
I don’t know what the average age is, but there were a few too many 23 year olds on the team for my liking.
red blazer, de la cruz being named a top 10 prospect in his league last year wasn’t enough of a case to be watched?
I agree–but I think that this team will be used in the future more to develop high school players and latin american signings. The problem with this theory is that the organization hasn’t really had a plethora of good options from high schoolers and latin america progams. Kozma and Rosales being two of the better examples…
The Riportella two tools joke got a loud laugh from me. I then had to ignore the curious looks from my co-workers.
Thanks erik.
Sounds like a good line up to me! All these guys are great players and have a lot of potential even though they are young!
