Prospect Stew
Rounding up the Redbird notes around the net.
Matthew Leach has another guess at the roster. He’s consistently had Kyle McClellan making the roster over Chris Perez (who is still around). McClellan has really made an impression on Duncan this spring. Somehow Kelvin Jimenez has “earned” a spot in the bullpen as well. Why we keep garbage relievers like that around when you have pitchers like Perez, Motte or Worrell is beyond me.
Also, from Mr. Leach — Brian Barton is day-to-day with a hamstring issue.
Lots of stuff from Kary Booher of the Springfield News-Leader (whose site got an overhaul). First off, he takes a look at Clayton Mortensen’s chances of making the Springfield roster. Hint: they’re good chances. Baseball America should swoon over Mortensen if his changeup is as good as suggested. Two other names that pop up in that article are Adam Daniels and Stu Pomeranz. I wouldn’t mind the Cardinals converting Daniels to a reliever and seeing if he can add a few mph or become a little more imposing with his fastball-slider combo. I’m still perplexed by the Haberer release. Also, Pomeranz is said to be topping out at 86mph with his fastball. That’s not good. It’s consistent with what the announcers said in the AFL game I watched and he just doesn’t have the command to go with an 86mph fastball.
Booher has a feature on Jon Jay as well. After a year cut short due to shoulder injury, he’s got a chance to establish himself as the Cardinals best centerfield prospect (assuming Rasmus gets enough MLB at-bats to no longer qualify as a prospect).
Saberscouting has a scouting report on Shooter Hunt — a name you’ve seen mentioned in FGC’s college baseball monday roundups. I’m firmly in the “take the best available player” camp but a) I’m skeptical he falls to pick 13 and b) I’d rather see the Cardinals draft a position player with that pick.
Today’s game is on network TV (i.e. it’s free) and it looks like it could feature Luke Gregerson and Matthew Scherer. Note to self: steal the remote at family’s easter lunch. . .
Happy Easter everyone!

the only problem i have with hunt is he walks way too many guys. sheppers has just stuff that is just as good, and he has a lot better control.
Cards dont seem to put much weight in BB per 9.
Why? I have no idea.
