• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Daily Prospect Report 3/23/08

Due to rain, the Cardinal staff was forced to switch some games around. Instead of four games, they played three consisting of one 11 inning game and two 12 inning games so the pitchers could all get their work in today.

Memphis 6, New Orleans 12 (11 innings)

  • Jaime Garcia threw 5 innings of 1 run ball walking just a single batter. I think his command was substantially affected by the injury last season. He was characterized as having front of the rotation potential prior to last season and there’s little reason to think that’s not still the case.
  • Memphis was up 2-1 after 6 before twin implosions by Dewon Brazelton and Cory Rauscheberger. Each allowed 5 ER in 1.2 innings and 2 innings, respectively.
  • Colby Rasmus was 1-for-3.
  • Jarrett Hoffpauir went 3-for-6. I understand that Hoffpauir is no hot shakes at SS, but Aaron Miles should be thanking his lucky stars that the Cardinals signed Cesar Izturis — it forces me to direct my roster-mongering at him first for players like Hoffpauir and . . .
  • Joe Mather, who had a pair of doubles.

Springfield 4, Binghamton 5

  • PJ Walters went 5 innings allowing 2 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 2 walks and striking out 6. I’d love to see what kind of hitters he was facing after striking out 6. He has yet to really falter despite the anemic fastball velocity.
  • Stu Pomeranz went 1.2 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 runs. He’s not going to last long if he doesn’t get back up to around 89-90mph with his fastball.
  • Relievers Kenny Maiques and Jon Mikrut each threw a scoreless inning.
  • Luke Gorsett was 2-for-4 with a HR and 2 RBIs.
  • Pete Kozma was 1-for-2.
  • Allen Craig singled and walked with an RBI. He seems to be behind Freese on the 3B depth chart but I think he’s the better long term prospect.
  • Tyler Greene was 1-for-3.

Palm Beach 7, St. Lucie 3

  • This is my favorite line of the day. Mark McCormick picked up the win with 5 innings of 2 hit ball walking zero and striking out 4. I still believe Mark. I still believe.
  • David Kopp went 4 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) with 1 free pass and 2 punchouts.
  • Arnoldi Tony Cruz went 2-for-4 with a double and a homer.
  • Daniel Descalso went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.
  • Nick Derba and Steve Hill each walked and doubled. Derba’s my sleeper pick in the organization. He’s a strong defensive catcher who can hold his own in the batters box.
  • Daryl Jones went 1-for-4. I remember when I saw him in QC last year. He just oozes talent. Still raw but if he ever puts it together watch out.

Thanks to John Vuch for the box score information.

  1. you have to love to see that kind of performance from mccormick. every once in a while he does something like that and makes you think of what could have been.

david kopp continues to pitch well this spring. i would have to think he has earned a spot in that palm beach rotation.

pete kozma 1-2 in the AA game? that is nice to see. i would have to think he has earned the starting shortstop spot at quad cities after originally being slated for extended spring.

  2. Seriously, every time I blink Arnoldi “Caribbean” Cruz puts up some sick game. I’m excited to see what he can do over a full season.

  3. It sure looks like Kopp is back on track, which is very good.

  4. P.J. Walters gives every appearance of being ready for the challenge of AAA. Not only did he post a 2.37 ERA in his 8 AA starts last year, but check out the breakdown:

    1st 4 starts 23 IP, 14 K’s, 9 BB’s, 10 ER
    2nd 4 starts 26.1 IP, 23 K’s, 6 BB’s, 3 ER

Walters made quick adjustments, and in no time became as dominant at Springfield as he was in A-ball. I’m not going to doubt him until hitters begin hittin’ him.

Garcia certainly looks ready for AAA, as well. Hard to believe a non-prospect like Hawksworth or Parisi (both had ERAs around 5.00 in AAA while old for the league) will be allowed to block either him or Walters for any length of time.

  5. Honestly, I’ll be the first one to admit I was feeling a little bitter about last year’s draft after day one but I was wrong. While the Cards probably didn’t end up with any superstars, Mortensen is looking good for a middle of the rotation spot, maybe better, Kozma at best being a Michael Young type, then you look at what guys like Jess Todd and David Kopp are doing. With some of the other guys that have some intriguing tools (T. Henley, Zwacki (sp?), D. Hooker, D. Ingram) you have to give it to Luhnow and co., compared to Drafts past they did an excellent job.
