• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Daily Prospect Report 3/22/08

Yet again, addressing a question from the comments-

tnek5 asks: What would your perfect rotation of Cardinals prospects be?

Without any real explanation, mine are pretty unsurprising-

  1. Jaime Garcia
  2. Clayton Mortensen
  3. Adam Ottavino
  4. Tyler Herron
  5. Mitch Boggs

Ottavino and Boggs could be relievers in the end. I could see David Kopp jump up the rankings with a good season, and Kyle McClellan also if he does indeed start in AAA/and do well there.

Jumping into tonight’s DPR. Allen Craig goes bananas. Jess Todd shuts them down. And Ryde Rodriguez goes yard. It’s all in your DPR.

Memphis 6, Albuquerque 1

  • Mitchell Boggs was brilliant, throwing 5 innings of shutout ball. He allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and K’d 7. I like seeing him miss bats like that.
  • Ron Flores went 2 innings, striking out 4.
  • Mark Worrell allowed the only run.
  • Jason Motte allowed a hit and struck out 2.
  • Jose Martinez was the offensive star, he doubled and hit a three run homer.
  • Backup catcher Gabe Johnson went 2 for 3 with a double and run scored.
  • Reid Gorecki doubled. The former organizational player of the year from 2004 is now 27 years old. I was surprised not to see his name in the last round of cuts.
  • Brian Barden and David Freese had the other hits for Memphis.

Springfield 5, Carolina 1

  • Brad Furnish went 5 innings, allowed 1 run on 4 hits. He didn’t walk or strike anyone out.
  • Matt Scherer thew one perfect inning.
  • Nick Webber, Bob Zimmerman and Luke Gregerson each threw a scoreless inning. Gregerson and Zimmerman had 2 whiffs apiece. Zimmerman is a former 4th round pick for the Angels. He went to high school at DeSmet and is a former MVP of the Lincoln Regional for the Missouri State Bears. Once a top 30 prospect in the Angel system, shoulder problems have slowed his career.
  • Allen Craig is no stranger when it comes to hitting in Jupiter. He went 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI.
  • Wee Shane Robinson had two hits, a double and 3 RBIs.

Palm Beach 5, Jupiter 3

  • A nice comeback for the Cards. They trailed 3-1 in the 7th before scoring four runs in the bottom of the 7th.
  • Gary Daley threw 3 innings, allowed 1 hit and 1 run.
  • Eddie Degerman got the early hook. He lasted only two-thirds of an inning, allowing 1 hit, 2 runs, 2 walks.
  • Elvis Hernandez was the winner in relief with a perfect inning. I thought he might be tried out in relief.
  • Armando Carrasco threw 2.2 scoreless innings.
  • Josh Dew, The Man of Troy, pitched a perfect 9th with a K.
  • Jonathan Edwards went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
  • Daniel Descalso had 2 hits and an RBI.

Quad Cities 10, Greensboro 1

  • After getting banged around a little bit, Jess Todd took the hill for the QC today. He responded with five shutout innings of one-hit ball, 0 BB, 5 K’s.
  • The wiry Andres Rosales followed with 3 innings, allowed just 2 hits and an unearned run.
  • Charlie Pelt went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Domnit Bolivar went 3 for 5 with a double and run scored.
  • Parkway Central product Travis Mitchell collected 2 hits.
  • Beau Riportella and Luis DeLaCruz each had a pair of RBIs.

Quad Cities #2 5, Marlins # 5 0

  • Ryde Rodriguez hit a 3-run HR. I take it he was not using a wet copy of Baseball America to hit with.
  • Matt Arburr has had a great spring so far, his name keeps popping up in these emails. He went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 runs scored and an RBI. I think he may beat out Andrew Brown for a job at 1B at the QC. Arburr is a big dude, at 6-4, 260. He hit 12 homers for Division II Pace last season.
  • Deryk Hooker threw 3 IP, 2 hits, no runs, 2 BB, 2 K’s.
  • Mark Diapoules also had 3 scoreless innings, 2 hits, 1 BB, 4 K’s.

  1. Is there anyway we can get more info on Kevin Moscatel and Javier Avendano?

  2. Whoa, the new layout threw me off. For a minute, I thought I went to the wrong site or something.

  3. I’m just experimenting…again….. and it’s back.

  4. You can’t stop Allen Craig. You can’t even hope to contain him….

Great to see Gregerson doing so well, too. Like Craig, he probably should skip straight to AAA. Looks like Jose Martinez is ready for the challenge of Memphis, as well.

  5. I was at the back fields for these games. Watched Furnish pitch effectively and Allen Craig smoke a liner in the AA game before switching bleachers to AAA. Was hoping to see Craig field a ball but it didn’t happen while I was watching. Anderson looked just fine blocking balls behind the plate.

Jumped over to the AAA game when Freese and Mather were on deck. Boggs looked spectacular. The Marlins prospects looked helpless. Had a John Gall sighting. The Martinez home run was pulled down the line… I didn’t have a good view of it through the dugout roof. I left for lunch and the stadium before Motte and Worrell pitched, dangit.

And the day before, I got to talk to Jameson Maj for a few minutes. He’ll be assigned to extended to start the year–I told him he’s got fans out there.

  6. Zimmerman had his motion changed by the Angels staff because they thought it would help his shoulder problems. Well, it also took his velocity into the 80’s and he lost what made him good. He went back to Missouri State this offseason and worked with the Bears coach to get back to what he was. He started throwing 95 again, and shut down the Bears in workouts (a team hitting .333 as a team and averaging 9 runs per game). At this point, I think he’s going to ride it out with his old motion and hope it doesn’t blow out. Good luck Bob!
