We’ve been paging Mike Matheny for a while to help Bryan Anderson with his receiving skills, and Matheny, being the class act that he is, answered the bell. Derrick Goold has all the info.
More than a fan of Anderson’s, Matheny wants to be a mentor.
The Cardinals former catcher has a place not too far from Springfield, Mo., where Anderson will return this season for Double-A. Matheny plans to check in often on the protege.
“His offense is going to progress him through the (minors) just fine,” Matheny said. But with the position of catcher, “it’s just the mental discipline that comes with someone kicking him in the butt, and I like to kick.”
I don’t know about you, but that news made my day. Also per Goold, Memphis utility infielder Mike McCoy was traded to the O’s for future considerations.
The big club took a day off, but the minor leaguers did not. It’s time for your Spring Training DPR.
Memphis 11, Albuquerque 3
- Jaime Garcia started, throwing 3 innings. He allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 3. He’s slated to start his season in AA as far as I understand…
- Cory Rauschenberger went four strong, allowing a run on 3 hits with 5 K’s. Looking at the Memphis and Springfield rotations, they all seem pretty set. Rauschenberger was horrid to start the season last year, but got better and better as the season went on. He still seems in limbo to me, but he’s making a strong case.
- Mark Worrell threw 1 scoreless inning.
- Amaury Marti 3-for-5 with two doubles off the CF fence wearing nothing but a speedo and batting with a shoe horn. Oh, and Fidel Castro retired because he said so.
- Cody Haerther went 3 for 5 w/ a 2 bagger. Mather and Rasmus are locks for the OF in Memphis, while Marti, Stavinoha and Haerther are duking it out for playing time. My guess is they loan Marti back to the Mexican League, while Stavi and Cody share LF and DH
- Josh Phelps went yard
- Rico Washington went 2-for-4 with a walk
- Jose Martinez doubled in his only AB
Springfield 2, Carolina 3
- Last year’s Organizational Pitcher of the Year P.J. Walters went 4 innings, allowing no runs on 5 hits. He walked 1 while striking out 5
- Mark McCormick relapsed to his wild ways, walking 4 over 2 innings. He allowed 1 run, 2 hits and had 1 K.
- Cool Hand Luke Gregerson threw 1.1 perfect innings, fanning 2.
- The aforementioned Bryan Anderson went 2-for-4
- Allen Craig doubled
Palm Beach 11, Jupiter 3
- Former Clemson Tiger and 2nd round pick David Kopp threw 3 innings, allowed 1 hit, 2 walks and had 5 K’s. The 07 draft trio of Mortensen, Todd and Kopp have went from looking “eh” to “hey, alright!”. I was hardly enthusiastic about any of them being drafted, really, other then perhaps Todd because of his K rate. Now I’m pretty stoked about all three. It’s almost like Jeff Luhnow and his crew do their homework or something.
- Eddie Degerman threw 2 scoreless.
- The offense jumped on Jupiter (A Jupiter Jump!) for 6 runs in the first, including a 3-run HR by Daryl Jones and a two-run shot by Nick Derba. Love to see Jones start to hit.
- Thomas Pham had a couple of hits, including a double. Seeing Pham and Jones’ name in these things everyday is making me happy. If you poke these guys with a stick tools ooze out, yet both have been hugely disappointing results-wise. And yet they are so young. Hopefully this is a sign of them tapping their potential. I’d have to say Pham has to make a full season squad, either at Palm Beach or at least QC.
- Steven Hill went yard
- Brandon Buckman went 2 for 4
- SS Oliver Marmol tripled, walked and drove in 2.
QC 1, Greensboro 2
- Thomas Eager went 3.1 innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 ER, walked 2 and struck out 3
- Chuckie Fick went 2.2 innings, gave up 2 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, and had 1 K
- Eduardo Sanchez threw for 2 IP, surrendered 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 BB, and had 3 K’s
- D’Marcus Ingram singled and walked.
- Charles Kingrey and Domnit Bolivar both tripled.
QC #2 6, Marlins 5th team 5
- Brandon Garner threw hitless innings, allowing 1 unearned run with 1 BB and 3 K’s
- Former 2005 2nd round pick Josh Wilson lasted 3 IP, gave up 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, walked 1 BB with 2 K’s
- Big Matt Arburr went 2 for 3, including a double. He drove in and scored two.
- Mateo Marquez, the man with the magic glove, went 2 for 3 with a walk

I would love to see Jones and Pham put it together. After seeing the video of Jones’ swing, it’s hard to believe it’s going to happen, but hey, that’s sort of what Curtis Granderson’s swing looked like early in his career too.
Founding member of the David Kopp bandwagon right her, by the way. Come on, David!!!
David Kopp is the Mark Hamilton of pitchers for me. I seem to be the odd man out with regards to him because I’m not a believer. O’Leary loves his mechanics fwiw.
Thanks for the updates, Erik.
I’d love to see a Memphis rotation that includes Walters, Garcia, and McClellan, but I guess that ain’t gonna happen. Not for awhile, anyway.
I think Daryl Jones’ “tools” have to be called hypothetical at this point; he’s never hit for average, his isolated slugging is under .100, his SB% is mediocre, and I haven’t heard anyone rave about his range or arm in the outfield lately. I’m afraid sometimes Black Guy Who Runs Well = Toolsy, much like Short White Guy = Scrappy.
Jones is smallish for an outfielder, so I doubt he’ll ever be even a 20-HR guy. Also DJ needs an injection of Colby Rasmus’ Transcendent Strikezone Management Elixir.
Az, I agree with you on Hamilton I beleive. To me Hamilton has the raw stuff to be good but I peg him as a Russell Branyan type player eventually, weak on everything but power, you will get homers but not much else from him. I hope I am wrong but that is how I peg him right now.
Is it just me or does Steven Hill get a couple of hits everyday?
no, seems to me Hill gets his hits. I’m glad he is at PB this year. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him invade Springfield sometime this year.
i was a fan of kopp before the draft, and i am happy to see him pitching well. according to derrick goold he was averaging 93 and touched 95 with his fastball yesterday.
Hi everyone. First time posting on FR but I stop over and read the posts here all the time, great stuff. I may have to post here more often since I HATE the new VEB format because they took away my favorite part of the site, ME!!!! Thats right I was lost in the move. The tech guys are working on it but I think they may have bigger problems since I can’t even sign up for a new account. IE says Done, error on page every time, even on bleed cubbie blue so it has something to do with that damm new format.
I would love to know if it’s true Marti, after swimming from Cuba to Florida for ST, thought the swim was too easy and is planing to swim from Florida to Memphis via the Mighty Mississippi. He’ll prove who is really mighty.
