According to Matthew Eddy at Baseball America, the Cardinals have signed NDFA Carlos Pupo. Carlos Pupo? Who?
He’s a big, big man at 6-4, 250 pounds. His Baseball Cube page tells us for one reason or another he was quite abysmal for Purdue, putting up a .175/.262/.298 line. But his season prior at Division II Newberry College Pupo hit .398/.469/.633 in 98 at bats with 8 steals in 10 attempts. He has been playing 1B right now with the Quad Cities 1 team. Per the latest Vuch Report he went 2 for 3 with 2 walks and a double. I’d expect him to be Batavia’s new 1B, unless he’s just awful in extended spring training.
Eddy also notes Willian Sandoval mercifully has been released. Sandoval was suspended 50 games for breaking the substance abuse policy, and has a careerĀ .476 OPS between State College and the Quad Cities.

If that is Mr. Pupo seated, is that a long scar running down his knee or a picture glitch?
I believe I read he also put up some really good numbers in the Columbian Winter league this year.
