A letter from Sig Mejdal to our readers
Sig Mejdal, the Senior Quantitative Analyst in the Player Development/Scouting for the Cardinals, contacted me about a very cool opportunity for you readers. Here is the message he wanted me to pass along-
Dear Future Redbirds Readers,
The St Louis Cardinals would like your help in this years Amateur Draft. Many people affiliated with the Cardinals read Future Redbirds on a regular basis and appreciate the passion for the team as well as the thoughtfulness of the postings. This is an opportunity for us to work together to find talent for the organization.
Here is how it works. The organization is looking for your help in identifying amateur college baseball talent that might be under the radar. By that we mean players that are college players and do not play for a D1 school. Our scouts spend many hours doing research and going to games, but every year there are young men from college programs that are off the beaten path that would make good professional baseball players but are not selected because they are overlooked.
There is also an incentive. Besides helping your favorite team and making a players’ dreams come true, you can win the grand prize. For details of the contest, click on this link. Thanks in advance for those who choose to help and please keep up the good work.
-Sig Mejdal
I personally may do a little head hunting myself at the local community college, just for fun. I like the thinking here. They are not omnipresent, and there probably are a number of good players in these smaller schools that fall between the cracks. Why not enlist the help of their passionate fanbase? If any of you readers do find the player the Cardinals draft because of this, that player will certainly have his own “watch” somewhere on the sidebar. Luke Gregerson, Cory Rauschenberger, Arnoldi Cruz, Beau Riportella, Brandon Dickson, Kenny Maiques, Brian Broderick and the one and only Albert Pujols all were drafted from small colleges. Go out there and beat the bushes, folks. Happy hunting.

sounds like a cool idea, but where do i sign up to make the pick at #13?
So I can put…
St. Louis Cardinals - Associate Scout
…on my resume?
Heh, that would be a cool line on the Vita.
Anyway, I’m intrigued by the request. I’m an Assistant Professor at Arkansas Tech, and I love watching baseball. I will certainly keep my eye on teams that roll through Tech when I watch their games.
Of course, we aren’t restricted to just the teams we can see. I wonder if we couldn’t try something comprehensive in the community…dividing up schools for us to take a closer sabre look at the baseball teams under the radard. D.GOOCH
Brilliant move by the front office realizing they can get fans to do this for free rather than hiring more scouts…..
Kidding aside, this is a really cool idea….now I wish I went to some ho-dunk college just so I could help out.
ATU, Gooch? I didn’t realize that–I’m here in Russellville as well.
It really is a pretty neat idea and hopefully it’ll turn up a hidden gem.
Cool. Maybe we could collaborate on an analysis should we prove sufficiently motivated to join in on the fun. D.GOOCH
John Flanagan…LHP..at Southwest Illinois College in Belleville. This kid is fantastic!! He could probably pitch in the Majors right now.
