It’s kinda like prospect stew, only more soupy and less meaty.
Derrick Goold has a good word on Jaime Garcia:
…coming off a season cut short by a tender elbow. Did not have surgery as the Cardinals’ doctors prescribed rest. Has no restrictions on him, according to the Cardinals. Threw well Monday, and had noticeable zip on his fastball.
I feel like I can breath a little bit easier. (Hat tip, Liam)
Jim Callis thinks that because of this year’s talented draft class, more and more teams aren’t going to cow down to MLB’s slotting:
“You look at some of these teams toeing the line, like the Pirates and the Astros, and their general managers and scouting directors are getting fired,” another AL club official said. “Frank Coonelly comes into Pittsburgh and says he’s going to take the best available player. More and more organizations are going to break from the pack and call their bluff.”
Luhnow doesn’t need to just call the MLB’s bluff, he may wanna try and call his boss’s bluff. If a top Boras client like Gerrit Cole or Eric Hosmer fall to #13 and the Cardinals chose to play it cheap, well…
Speaking of the draft, BA has their preliminary top 30 out, and have HS RHP/OF Aaron Hicks at 13. They are not considering signability or what they think teams will do. It’s hard to figure out whether Hicks is a pitcher or a hitter at this time. He has a lot of movement on his fastball and scouts rank his breaking ball as plus plus. He’s a switch hitting, 5 tool talent that’s drawn comparisons to Jose Reyes, which would make him the most exciting high school player in the game if you ask Joe Morgan. Needless to say, I’d be pretty happy if they pick Hicks.
Speaking of the draft, Picklefork and fewgoodcards have both agreed to help me look at the draft this year, and we’ll try and have our thoughts on the top players soon. We’re still getting together on a plan, but be on the lookout.
Tango has his scouting report for the fans available now for college. If you regularly attend college baseball games, please say in the comments what school’s games you attend, I have a little side project you may be interested in.

Hey I’m planning on going to a few SIU games this season. Let me know what you need.
Oh yeah? Well, I’ll bet your draft coverage won’t be as long winded as mine! So there!
Haha, RB you are reaching the VEB audience though so you have to have more background then the guys here do. BTW I do enjoy that coverage as well, all the information I can get is welcomed.
You better believe it, RB. Or as my pastor says, the heart can only absorb what the seat can endure.
i’ll be at a good portion of the university of Arkansas’ home games this year. northwest arkansas is also the new home of Kansas City’s AA team and i have season tickets to that as well.
george and stlcards–
i will email both of you later tonight. i have your addresses from what you entered in to comment. thanks for your responses.
I usually attend most missouri state (springfield) games each season. i’d be happy to help this glorious site of redbird knowledge
I’m a season ticket holder for Arizona State and I’d be glad to help see some Sun Devils become Future Redbirds.
I might attend a couple of college games if I can…but I am a junkie when it comes to watching it online and on TV.
I will probably head over a check out a couple of potential 1st round HS pitchers in the STL area though.
Baseball gets up and going in D1 fairly soon…..im pumped.
I am a former player with Northeastern and will be attending most of the home games this spring, as well as some Boston College and Holy Cross games.
You should already know what games I’ll be attending :p

nuhusky, were you there when adam ottavino was there or did you see him pitch much?
I will hopefully be able to see a lot of games at Southeast Missouri State University this spring.
I think that it’s important to remember that the Cardinals don’t just have an earlier first round pick that usual. They also have a sandwich pick, are drafting in the same slot in every round and are doing so in a draft touted as better than usual. This along with the Cardinals status as a “rebuilding” team makes draft day ‘08 a very important point in the team’s recent history. If the brain trust really nails this draft we should be sitting pretty in a few years. If not our current talent pool won’t be enough. I, for one, don’t know anything about amateur players so I’ll be depending on you all to let me know what we should do come June.
rockin’, if you are going to be seeing a lot of SEMO games, make sure you make it out to the eastern kentucky series and see christian friedrich. there is a good chance he could be the cardinals’ first rounder if he even lasts that long in the draft.
fewgoodcards
Yeah, Ottavino is one of my good friends, actually met my girlfriend through him. We were freshmen at the same time. I’ll be heading to West Palm Beach to see him in early March.
that’s awesome. hopefully he has a strong season at AA this year and can put himself in a position to help out in st. louis in the next year or two. everyone knows we could use a power arm like his in the rotation.
Alright Erik I’ll look for that e-mail. I go to SIU so I’m going to catch a game whenever I get a chance.
Not college, but I go to quite a few Alaska summer league games. Used to send reports to JD Mah back when his blog was up.
Have gotten to see guys like Valencia, Daley, Canham, Scott Gorgen (awesome last year), Weathers, etc. the last couple years on the “home” team.
fewgoodcards… I will be sure to do so. Looks like Eastern Kentucky doesn’t come out here until early May though.
