• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Februrary 29th Grapefruit Action and some non-baseball fun

Great baseball discussion today about pitching workloads.
Prospects in today’s game:

Brendan Ryan went 2-for-3 with a triple.
David Freese went 2-for-3 with a triple as well. Given that Freese is the only true third basemen in camp, I wonder if the Cardinals would consider carrying him as Spiezio’s replacement.
Colby Rasmus and Joe Mather both went 0-for-1 [...]

Pitching Health, Part 2: 2008 Workload

There are a multitude of reasons why pitching prospects don’t pan out.  I believe that, after talent, the biggest reason is health.  Every organization has had its share of pitching prospects that have flamed out, or at least have had their career temporarily derailed, due to injury and the Cardinals are no exception.
There is no [...]

Grapefruity action

Living in eastern Iowa, we’ve had nothing but snow on the ground since Thanksgiving. It’s been a long, relentlessly brutal winter, but the seeing the first spring training game boxscore against a major league opponent is helping me see some light at the end of the tunnel. There were some points of encouragement to find, [...]

Pitching Health, Part 1: Q and A with Will Carroll

Will Carroll is on the great team of writers at Baseball Prospectus and provides insight into player health and injury recovery.  He was kind enough to answer a few questions about keeping young pitchers healthy.

A letter from Sig Mejdal to our readers

Sig Mejdal, the Senior Quantitative Analyst in the Player Development/Scouting for the Cardinals, contacted me about a very cool opportunity for you readers. Here is the message he wanted me to pass along-
Dear Future Redbirds Readers,
The St Louis Cardinals would like your help in this years Amateur Draft. Many people affiliated with the Cardinals read Future [...]

What exactly is a Billiken, anyway?

SLU probably won’t get confused with the NCAA baseball powerhouses of the world, but nonetheless it was nice to get a fresh boxscore in late February. The prospects picked on the Billikens until they cried uncle.

Brian Barton with his barking knee hit a 2 run homer in the 1st inning, and was 2 for 2 with [...]

BA’s Top 100

Take it away, Maury.
“bopbadaba! badabahbahbahbaaaaaaah!”
Here’s BA’s Top 100. The list begins and ends with two Reds centerfielders-Jay Bruce and Drew Stubbs. In between, there are three Cardinals, the ones you would expect.
2. Evan Longoria
3. Joba Chamberlain
4. Clay Buchholz
5. Colby Rasmus
Later on down the row…
85. Bryan Anderson
97. Chris Perez
Thoughts anyone?

Camp chirps

Our fine beatwriters keep dropping tasty tidbits from camp.

Prospect Profile: Kenny Maiques

I’m pretty high on Kenny Maiques.

Smell the glove: the outfielders

In Dan Fox’s latest column at BP, he looks at minor league outfielders using his SFR (Simple Fielding Runs) system. (You can read the primer on what it is and how it works here.) He has some pretty interesting findings, including a pretty vast disconnect between what the scouts and stats say about Cameron Maybin. [...]

Who used steroids?

Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday that it has suspended Cardinals minor league pitcher Scott Vander Weg for the first 50 games of the season for testing positive for a performance enhancing drug.  So who is this guy?
