• Amaury Marti Watch

    Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

    Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

I said we’d only go to #12, but I figure we can vote for #13 from now until Monday. Walters won in a landslide.

  14. my case for motte as the next best pitching prospect we have against the current favorite, maiques.

    40 man roster: motte

    age:
    motte, 25;
    maiques, 22

    level:
    motte, springfield;
    maiques, quad cities

    k per pa/ bb per pa: i consider this a wash for both of them
    motte, 31.5%/11%;
    maiques, 27.4%/9.6%
    in a roughly similar number of innings. both had strong upward trends in their k rates as the year progressed and motte cut his bb rate in half as the year progressed. motte also has had an unspectacular k/bb ratio of 2 at mesa, but i think its too small of a sample size to really refute his trend in springfield.

    gb%:
    motte, 41%;
    maiques, 55%

    pitches:
    motte, fastball (mid 90s), slider, splitter;
    maiques, fastball (low-mid 90s), ???

    lefty/righty splits:
    motte, can’t find anything besides his mesa splits, which i don’t think are informative
    maiques, no pronounced split

    intangibles: motte has only been professionally pitching for two years. his control faltered this year, but his k’s jumped. maiques has probably had his nerves tested far more than motte. despite being younger, he’s probably the more polished of the two. he also comes with an injury history.

    i think motte will be an impact reliever late this year

  18. I didn’t realize Motte was that old. In that case, Maiques.

  28. As for Motte and Maiques, how is it that the fact that he has only been pitching for 2 years a positive? You can say he will improve, but that is not a given. Plus he is 25. Maiques was 21-22 and dominated A. Maiques will probably start at Palm Beach, but there is a possibility he will end next year at AA. Maiques is more polished and has the potential to be a dominant pitcher with 2 very above average pitches-fastball and slider.

  29. Good News! The Cards reclaimed Cody Haether and added him to the 40 man roster. Which means that they now have a full roster. Apparently Mo tried to pass Cody through because he thought there was a possibility due to his recent injuries. The only thing now is that their 40 man roster is full which means that they can’t participate in the Rule 5 draft unless they clear room via trade or release of someone else. According to the dispatch look for an outfielder since they take up 10 spots now. The story is on stltoday.com.

  34. two years of pitching means that motte has far less arm wear and tear than most pitchers. again, maiques already has an injury history, which is something that should certainly factor into your vote. motte is also a power pitcher who got better as the year went on. i think that suggests that he still has a little room to improve, even at 25. pitchers absolutely dominate hitters at low levels, so i expect him to regress a bit. he’s not a power pitcher, meaning that his k rate is probably dependent on his slider… i doubt he’d be as good as a starter.

    i like maiques a lot and think he has a more potential than motte, but the climb is a long one and many pitchers don’t make it. that said, i’d probably be voting for maiques relatively soon, if he weren’t likely to win before motte.
