• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Reader Top 25, #8

  1. Rasmus
  2. Garcia
  3. Anderson
  4. Perez
  5. Ottavino
  6. Herron
  7. Mortensen

I just don’t see how it could be anyone else based on the last 2 votes, so I’m giving #7 to Mortensen. How’s that for a curveball this AM? Vote now for #8!

  1. Kozma

  2. I like Koz but I am going with Boggs

  3. Boggs…for the 8th time

  4. Peter Kozma. Top SS prospect in most recent draft. . .that HAS to be worth at least an 8th place ranking in our farm system.

  5. jose martinez ss

  6. Kozma

Erik, i realize you are trying to speed thigs up but you all but predicted Mortenson for #6 and it didn’t happen. Remember, it is not always the same people voting every day.

  7. I am thinking

    CRAIG

  8. Mort and Herron were close in the 5 vote it is just that more Ott voters went Herron then went Mort it was a close call, this time though I think it would have been Mort in a landslide.

  9. Boggs

  10. cariocacardinal–maybe you are right, looks like what’s done is done. Mort got a good chunk of the vote the past two days, i just think it was inevitable. I’m in no hurry, but he lost by 4 votes in the last, and had a good % in the vote before. I don’t think it’s a huge deal, but hindsight I may have just stayed at #7. Oh, well.

  11. Martinez.

No offense to Kozma, but all we really know about him is that the people who drafted him say really good things about him. In 42 minor-league games at three levels, his cumulative slugging percentage was .342. His highest was .396 at Johnson City in 30 games.

That’s too small a sample size to draw any negative conclusions. But at the same time, the numbers just aren’t good enough to make optimistic assumptions. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and not assume he’s a poor hitter. But I’m sure as heck not excited by what he’s done so far.

By contrast, in 2005 Martinez had a .500 slugging percentage at Johnson City. In 2006, he slugged .417 at QC, a much tougher park in a much tougher league. And in 2007 he had a cumulative .401 slugging percentage despite playing 62 games at Palm Beach, where he slugged just .323.

But even his .601 OPS at Palm Beach — by far the worst performance in three seasons and four different leagues — is barely worse than Kozma’s cumulative .655 OPS in three leagues in 2007.

We almost certainly have a future major leaguer with Martinez. Nobody can say that about Kozma yet.

  12. I disagree that we almost certainly have a future major leaguer with Martinez - a lot can happen b/w hitter friendly AA and the majors.

    My vote is for Kozma.

  13. craig. i would’ve went with mortenson next anyway.

  14. Martinez

  15. Martinez

  16. Craig

  17. Daniel Descalso

I’m going to throw a ringer out there, not because he’ll win, but rather because he’s over looked. reports say he is the best pure hitter in the draft, he’s played third base and second base, has a good eye at the plate, and a skill set not too far from say, matt antonelli. it’s a reach. kozma and martinez would fit quite well here, but descalso might be better than both in the long run

  18. Boggs or Craig.

  19. one or the other, jmedwick. one or the other. :)

  20. Boggs

  21. I am going to say Craig here.

If he had the glove to stick at 3B, it would be a no-brainer. However, I think he could have the bat to stick even at corner outfield IF he can make progress on the walk rate. At age 22, he still has time to develop more hitting skills, and the power is definitely there.

Tough to go against Boggs, though, if he is already close.

  22. Boogs for 8

  23. Allen Craig.

  24. Martinez.

  25. Just wondering if everyone is down on Boggs b/c he has been roughed up of late in the (hitter-friendly) AFL or b/c he does not have “dominating” stuff. Clearly he has been consistently above average in the minors at every stop and that kind of consistency goes a long way at the major league level.

I don’t believe that he will be a star in the majors but he can certainly be as good as Piniero and look what we just paid him!?!

  26. The question of Boggs is not the AFL or his stuff. It is basically that he gives up too many walks.

  27. I guess I should go Kozma…though there isn’t a whole lot in his stats to be excited about. if a 5th round pick had those stats I don’t think he would sniff the top 25…. So I vote for him on draft position only.

Nicholas, I am definitely down on Boggs because of his AFL performance. I was actually in Mesa last week and saw him pitch. he wasn’t fooling anyone. his velocity was not impressive, though I am judging that relative to the the other pitchers that day. they didn’t have a gun on him in the stadium. His location was clearly off, and when he did mix in a strike, it was often ripped to the outfield. As I said, he wasn’t fooling anyone that day. Now I realize that was just one day, but his stats in the AFL suggest that was not an aberation, rather that is typical of his time spent there. There could be something to the thought that he is worn out after a long season and the AFL…but most everyone else in the AFL has had a long season as well.

I am not jumping off the Mitch Boggs bandwagon entirely, based off what I have seen personally he didn’t strike me as someone I can be as excited about as Herron/Mortensen/Ottavino. But fear not, after “almost” bashing him throughout this, I plan on putting him as my pick for one of the next few slots.

  28. Alright Eric…

    Boggs for #8
    Craig for #9

  29. Craig for me. I saw him play at least 30 times this summer this kid can hit and his defense isn’t as bad as people have been saying. It’s not above average but I see it as being workable. He is definaltely one of our top position prospects.

  30. Kozma

  31. kozma

  32. Kenny Maiques

  33. Martinez

  34. Boggs

  35. Joe Mather—Does he count? If so, he is the pick.

If not, I will vote for Boggs

  36. Irishman,
The last 2 games for Boggs were not typival of his AFL appearences . The first 4 games were 13 innings and 3 hits 2 runs. Ater the game against USA where he went 4 innings with 1 hit and 0 runs it looks like he might have lost his focus , been tired or just had 2 really bad outings, which he has been known to do. However for 2/3 of his AFL games he was lights out and showed his high upside. Boggs for #*

  37. kozma…gonna be a stud…has to be one

  38. Mitchell Boggs #8

  39. Boggs

  40. This to me is where it starts to get tough simply because after those top guys there are really few standout players. I really wanted to go with Maiques, but since it seems as though he is out of the running I won’t waste my vote.

Based on his potential evidenced by his 1st round draft position, early returns (regarded as the best defensive player at his position for his league), and value to the organization…

    My pick is Kozma.

  41. Well irishman, considering his other outings in the fall league, i guess the day you were there was an aboration. Considering up unitl the last week Boggs had an ERA under 2, and totally dominated Team USA. So if you can call him out for that one outing, I will back him up on the month straight that he dominated the league.

    Boggs for 8

  42. Boggs

  43. i have a lot of trouble understanding boggs this early. i’m not sure he shows much more promise than hawksworth or reyes. can someone explain him to me? he sits in the low nineties and doesn’t have much of an out pitch, isn’t particularly young, has mediocre walk and strikeout rates, and has never had great results, unlike the other two. (of course, he’s never had terrible results either, unlike the other two.)

  47. Thanks for everyones responses on my Boggs query. Just trying to get a better impression of what people think of him. I know he’s not great…but he’s never really bad either. I guess the hot/cold reaction to him is a reflection of his averageness. You know the wisdom of crowds and all that. Anyway, averageness (my new made-up word) has its place in baseball and if he can keep it up as he moves up he will be a useful pitcher.
