• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Daily Prospect Report 8/27/07

In case you missed it, Colby Rasmus, Chris Perez, Jarrett Hoffpauir, Joe Mather, Mitch Boggs, Jason Motte and Stu Pomeranz were all announced to the Mesa Solar Sox roster for the upcoming Arizona Fall League.

Colby Rasmus was named the Texas League Player of the Week for the 2nd straight time.

Colby fell a spot on BA’s Hot Sheet to #2. Deryk Hooker had a mention there as well.

The Cardinals picked Hooker in the seventh round of this year’s draft, and the 18-year-old has had one of the best debuts in the GCL. Through 31 innings, Hooker has 47 strikeouts, 11 walks and a 2.32 ERA in 31 innings, including 20 strikeouts in 12 innings this month. In his most recent outing, Hooker needed just four innings to record 11 strikeouts, and surrendered just one walk. He throws his fastball in the low-90s, but his mechanics need a fair amount of work. At six-foot-four and 185 pounds, there appears to be room for projection with Hooker as well.

Chris Constancio ran the numbers in finding some comparison to players to Colby during his age 20 and 21 seasons, and he sizes up well with some big name prospects and an MVP. Adam Jones and Justin Morneau fall in the “Best Case” side, Elijah Dukes and Jarrod Saltalamacchia fall in the middle. Thankfully, Colby doesn’t seem to be into issuing death threats, which should keep him on the field.

For some reason, the minors names All Stars during and at the end of the season. Allen Craig was named FSL All Star, as was Rick Ankiel for the PCL. Rasmus, Chris Perez and Bryan Anderson were named Texas League All Stars.

To no one’s great surprise, Travis Hanson is off the 40 man roster.

In tonight’s DPR: Colby does it again. Beware of “the Body”. Flashbacks of badness from the big club down in Memphis. Palm Beach takes on Pedro Martinez. Dramatic finish in Batavia. Read up on it all here after the jump.

Memphis 10, Iowa 8

  • This game started like a bad game from earlier this July. Mike Maroth started, he was dreadful. It took him 30 pitches to get through 1.2 innings and he gave up a grand slam. Brad Thompson followed, and he also stunk. Wonderbrad lasted 3.1 but was lit up for 2 homers and 4 total earned runs. Retreads like Brian Falkenborg, Kelvin Jimenez and Mike Venafro had to stop the bleeding. Then Chris Perez allowed a walk and a hit, but struck out 3 to finish it up. On the offensive side of things…
  • Joe Mather went yard, he’s hit 5 homers in his last 8 games.
  • Danny Ardoin went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles.
  • Brian Barden went 2 for 3 with a homer.
  • Tagg Bozied went 2 for 4 with a double.

Springfield 10, Arkansas 3

  • I hear that Colby Rasmus guy is pretty good. He homered again, for the TL leading 27th time. He went 2 for 5 with a walk and 2 K’s, driving in 3 overall.
  • Amaury Marti went 3 for 5 with a HR and 3 RBI. He also delivered a baby during the 7th inning stretch and got that Mike Vick character to finally apologize earlier today, but he’s not really buying it, either.
  • Reid Gorecki went 2 for 4 with a double.
  • Rico Washington went 2 for 4 with a HR.
  • Eric Haberer lasted 7 innings. He allowed 3 runs on 4 walks and 7 hits, while striking out just 2 but induced 11 ground outs.
  • Jason Motte struck out all three batters he faced.

Palm Beach 3, St. Lucie 1

  • Tyler Norrick may or may not have a successful big league career, but he does have something to tell his future grandkids. He outdueled Pedro Martinez, who’s eternally on rehab assignment. Norrick went 7 innings, allowed just a run on 3 hits and a walk and struck out 7. Pedro was OK, but he allowed a run on 5 hits and 2 walks with 4 K’s.
  • Luke Gorsett went 2 for 4, one of the hits was a double off of Martinez. The ex-Cornhusker now has a .301/.341/.468 line for Palm Beach, not shabby.

Quad Cities 6, Cedar Rapids 3

  • Another big win for the Swing, they go ahead 4.5 games with this one. Jose Ramirez went 2 for 4.
  • Brandon Dickson went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks, while fanning 3. 12 of his outs came via the ground.
  • Kenny Maiques struck out 1 and allowed a walk en route to his 31st save.

Batavia 5, Auburn 4 10 innings

  • Another ex-Husker had a nice night. Andrew Brown hit a walk off homer with 2 outs in the 10th. He went 2 for 4 for the night overall.
  • Justin Roberson went 4 for 5, including a triple.
  • Jesse Todd made his first appearance since August 10th, and allowed a run on 2 walks while striking out 2. He only went 1.1, he allowed no hits, Josh Dew allowed the runner he inherited to score on a 2 wild pitches to blow the save. Dew was reasonably effective after that, striking out 4 and walking one over 1.2 innings.
  • Brian Broderick allowed a solo homer while fanning 5.

Johnson City 1, Danville 6

  • Horrid night for the offense. They were held to just 3 hits and a walk while striking out for a team total 15 times.
  • Pete Kozma doubled.
  • Reynier Gonzalez yielded 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks with 4 strikeouts in 3 IP. He also had 2 wild pitches.
  • Raymond Silva gave up a 3 run homer, and 4 total runs overall while only recording an out.

GCL Cardinals 1, GCL Dodgers 6

  • Held to only 4 hits, this is like a repeat of the last box score.
  • No pitcher stood out performance wise, so I’ll tell you about the guy you probably heard of. Brett Zawacki allowed a hit while striking out 1.

  1. Well, I do enjoy saying “Zawacki.”

In other news, can they keep Maroth on eternal rehab? How about a back yard with a tire swing for his next start?

  2. Nice night for the farm: 5-2 record.

  3. BA also mentions something about Mike Blazek as well, right under Hooker.

  4. jkd82 - this is a family site! (ba dum ching!)

erik, i love every line of the prospect reports, but none more than your nonchalant marti facts in the middle of the springfield wrap.

    zawacki!

  5. Interesting that Perez is going to the AZL, I thought that teams usually liked to send pitchers who had missed time during the season in order to limit innings on the guys that have pitched a full season. Guess they are hoping for improved command so that they can increase his chances of breaking camp with the team next year.

  6. Looking at the AFL teams for the past three years, I think there are five main categories of guys sent there.

    1) Players who need to come back from an injury, having missed considerable time this year. This year’s version is a guy like Baltimore’s Nolan Remond.

    2) Players whom the organization is hoping will skip a level. I will also lump into this category guys who are too old for their upcoming level and may need some extra time to put things together.

    3) Players who simply need to work on a facet of thier game.

    4) Guys who signed late and didn’t get enough work during the season.

    5) Guys who the team are considering for a spot on the major league roster.

Regarding Rasmus and Hoff, by process of elimination I think it come down to 3 or 5 for both of them. One could argue either, but I’m leaning towards Hoff is getting a serious shot at the starting lineup and Rasmus is there to consolidate skills after practically skipping a level.

  7. Does the fact that we are sending Mather to the AFL mean that he will not be allowed to leave via minor league free agency, or is the time for that decision later?

  8. Since they were both promoted at the same time, Hamilton and Mather both have 227 AB’s with their new teams and both are hitting .256. Hamilton has 37 RBI while Mather has 29 RBI.

  9. Tdawg - My guess is that they are sending Mather to the AFL to get one last look so they can make a decision on whether to keep him or let him leave.

  10. Mather isn’t going anywhere, he has 30 HR’s this season, they’ll resign him. In fact, how often do you hear about a guy going to AFL then being released or not returning. Not often.

  11. Per Kary Booher / Springfield News-Leader - Allen Craig has been moved up to Springfield to take the spot of injured 3B/1B Juan Richardson. Another strong bat added to Springfield for its playoff drive.

  12. No McKormick in AFL? What gives? He needs innings, his upside is too great to give up on this soon.

  13. I will be attending all 7 games and will be looking forward to watching Allen Craig. We will be able to use the DH in each game so he sould get some playing time. We are facing a lefty tonight so maybe he will be in the lineup.

  14. Jeffery…be sure to share with us what you see if you don’t mind.

  15. I didn’t think they were going to move Craig up to AA. Good for him.

  16. Just got home from the game. Colby home run first inning on a 1-2 count against a lefty. Craig well down swinging on offspeed pitches first 2 times up. Last 2 times up he hit the ball sharply right at ss and 2nd base. He was the DH. He might play again on Wednesday as the Wranglers are throwing another lefty. I heard they were waiting for Palm Beach to be out of the race before they moved somebody. The pitching was very good except for Sillman. He was down to his last batter with Motte ready in the pen. Good night for Springfield, the magic number for the second half is down to 4. I am looking forward to the playoff’s.
