• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

8/24/07 Daily Prospect Report

Friday night DPR. I’m on the run — quickie style.

Amaury Cazana Marti will rip your beating heart out of your chest, or favor you with a smile to break hearts?

At his locker, Marti was all smiles.

“That was something nice, no?” he said. “I want to do something like that every day.”

Kary Booher writes about Marti’s defense.

Joe Mather goes boom. Allen Craig continues to impress. Morales seems like a player to watch in JC. Have you had your DPR today?

Memphis 12, Alberquerque 5

  • Miguel Cairo goes 3-for-4.
  • Joe Mather went 1-for-4 with a HR. Just me or when he makes contact does it seem to go a long way.
  • Edgar Gonzalez went 5-for-5 with a HR and 6 RBI. For all the problems that the STL Cardinals have had at second base with Kennedy, not trying Gonzalez just baffles me. I’m a huge believer in defense, but the offensive upgrade of Gonzalez compared to Kennedy/Miles is pretty substantial.
  • Matt Pagnozzi went 3-for-5.

Springfield was postponed.

Palm Bech 2, Jupiter 8 (Game 1: 7 innings)

  • Allen Craig went 2-for-3.
  • Stu Pomeranz lasted only 2 innings allowing 4 hits and 3 runs (2 earned).
  • Robbie Ransom came on in relief and was terrible. He was followed by Michael Cooper, which is how you know you are chucking a game.

Palm Beach 6, Jupiter 3

  • 2 hits a piece for Allen Craig, Luke Gorsett, Dan Nelson and Brandon Yarbrough. After the game, Craig’s line sits at .316/.374/.533 for the season.
  • Not a terrible start for Trey Hearne going 4.2 innings allowing 7 hits, 2 ER and 2BB while striking out 4.
  • Luke Gregerson picked up save number 26 with a scoreless inning.

Quad Cities 0, Cedar Rapids 9

  • Tyler Henley went 0-for-3 with a BB.
  • The pitching of Elvis Hernandez, Chuckie Fick and Russ Cairns was all terrible. Hernandez was striking batters out but allowed 4 ER. Not a good game for any of the QC players.

Batavia 1, Mahoning Valley 3

  • Batavia was 2-hit with Dognnt Bolivar and William Groff recording the hits. They failed to draw a single unintentional walk.
  • Thomas Eager struck out 7 in 5 innings allowing 4 hits (including a solo HR).

Johnson City 1, Burlington 5

  • CF Adron Chambers went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles.
  • Osvaldo Morales went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
  • Nick Additon struck out 6 in 4.2 innings. He allowed 3 runs so it wasn’t his best showing but, statistically, he’s looked good at JC this year.

GCL Cardinals game was canceled.

  1. How would you rank Gonzo’s defense overall? I heard Hoff’s defense is not stellar, but it is adequate for the job. Eckstein and Ryan haven’t exactly been gold glovers out there lately either.

  2. What will become of Allen Craig next year? Might we move him to the OF because of ROlen?

  3. rolen would be the last reason i would move someone off of 3rd base. we need a legit option to replace him if he continues to suck and craig is about the only one we have right now.

  4. Rolen is here for 3 more years. Craig is 23. If his bat is really as good as it has seemed this year, I want him to move to the OF.

  5. with rolen’s offensive decline and the way his shoulder has been acting up all year, i doubt he makes it 3 years without another major surgery. we need an option in case he goes down.

also, it doesn’t take long to move to the outfield. the marlins didn’t move miguel cabrera to the outfield until after he reached the bigs. leave craig at third until he proves he can’t play there or he is raking in AAA, rolen is playing great in the bigs, and we have a hole in left.

  6. The easy answer to your question, AZ, is that Gonzalez is not on the 40 man roster, so unless you want to clear someone out (while still being responsible for their salary), he won’t see the bigs this year…That being said, I am all for second basemen who, you know…hit the baseball effectively.

  7. Another guy similar to Craig’s position is Steve Hill. He has some experience at catcher, but but we might have a logjam there too. I suppose it’s a good thing when you start having prospects that don’t have anywhere to go.

  8. Rockin - “How would you rank Gonzo’s defense overall?” By all accounts, he’s a hack with the glove. That’s primarily why he’s never been able to stick in the bigs. For whatever reason, the Cardinals think Aaron Miles is a capable backup at SS (he’s not) so there’s not really room for an all-bat middle infielder when you SS spends time on the DL.

Paul - There’s no reason to move Craig off third because he’s in High-A. Moving a prospect (that low in the minors) because he’s blocked by Rolen is premature. That said, his defense is probably nothing more than average (at best) at 3rd so there’s a chance he could move to the OF. Rolen isn’t as bad as he’s played this year but there’s a very real chance he’s begun a steep decline phase. He’s probably worth 10-15 runs on defense alone so him being just an average 3B offensively (.261 EqA) doesn’t mean he’s not contributing.

  9. The word on Craig is that he doesn’t have the arm to play 3B. I noticed that he’s been playing 1B lately with Palm Beach.

With Richardson out for the year at Springfield, there’s a 50/50 chance that Craig will get a callup to Springfield this week. It’ll come down to him or Mark Shorey.

  10. if he doesn’t have the arm for 3rd and that is what is causing all the errors why don’t they move him to 2nd? he has to have at least decent range and hands as he was a college shortstop. he wouldn’t be the best defender, but his offense would be elite at 2nd base.

  11. I’d be surprised if Craig gets a call-up. They sent Rico Washington to Springfield to shore up third base.

  12. With Richardson on the DL the team is a man short. I hope they bring Shorey back up becausew we need his bat and he is a better left fielder than Haerther. Hated to see him sent down. I wish he could play First Base. Hoffpauir’s defense at Springfield this year WAS stellar. Very solid on the double play and he showed much better range this year. Before Greene went down with the knee we were very solid up the middle. Martinez has done a nice job in Greene’s place, but I still think Greene is the better shortstop if his knee is OK.

  13. This is a little off-topic, but what is Hoffpauir’s speed like? Average speed? Base stealing speed?
That’s interesting about his defense in Springfield, Jeffrey. It’s encouraging to know he’s improved with the glove.

  14. Hoffpauir showed average speed this year in Springfield. He did look like a smart base runner though.

  15. Just realized I meant to put Jeffery instead of Jeffrey. Sorry about that.
