• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Daily Prospect Report 8/20/07

He’s alive! He’s alive! If you’ve been paying attention to the box scores lately you already know Colby is officially back. He made the triple crown of Monday honors, being named the TL player of the week, named #1 BA’s Prospect Hot Sheet, and making Kevin Goldstein’s Monday Morning Ten Pack. That 2005 draft sure has put together a bumper crop of outfielders, hasn’t it? Cameron Maybin, Jay Bruce, Justin Upton, Colby Rasmus and Andrew McCutchen have all shown at least flashes of why they are the top prospects for their respective organizations, with the the former more then the latter. Both Rasmus and McCutchen have all turned it up a notch lately, to say the least. It’ll be fun to track these players progress over the next few years.

Joe Mather needs a nickname. Joey Bombs won’t do. Joey Mather, as the Beaver is better, but that’s too long. Someone help me out here.

Unfortunately, I have a lot of crap to share tonight and not a ton of good. Relievers imploded. Anderson’s defense takes a hit. Stu Pomeranz hits a large bump on the way to his comeback. Adam goes wild again. And Reid Gorecki still stinks. Sorry folks, don’t shoot the messenger.

Memphis 5, Iowa 7

Springfield 4, Corpus Christi 8

  • After having such a great week, Colby Rasmus starts this week off on the wrong foot a bit, going 1 for 5 with 3 strikeouts. He did steal his 17th base, however.
  • Reid Gorecki struck out 3 times in 4 at bats. He’s struck out 11 times in 35 at bats since coming up to AAA. Mark Shorey wants his job back.
  • Mike Sillman allowed 5 earned runs while recording only 2 outs.
  • Mitchell Boggs went 6 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 3 walks and 5 hits, striking out 4 and giving up a HR. He also doubled.
  • Bryan Anderson allowed 3 stolen bases, and went 1 for 4 at the plate.
  • Mark Hamilton went 2 for 3 with a walk.

Palm Beach 9, Vero Beach 2 (7 innings)

  • For the 2nd consecutive game, Adam Ottavino walked 6 batters. He also gave up 4 hits and allowed 2 runs, while striking out 2 over 5 IP. Don’t do that again, Adam. Walks are not your friend. He also threw a wild pitch, underscoring his lack of control the past two games.
  • Brandon Yarbrough went 2 for 3 with a HR.
  • Mark Shorey, Allen Craig and Luke Gorsett all went 2 for 4.

Palm Beach 1, Vero Beach 6 Game 2

  • The offense was stifled to just two hits and two walks. Both were doubles from Luke Gorsett and Dan Nelson.
  • Stuart Pomeranz bombed in his inglorious return. He allowed 3 homers in 2.2 innings, and 4 earned runs over 2.2 innings.

The Swing’s game was postponed.

Batavia 3, Mahoning Valley 2

  • Thomas Eager struck out 6 in 3 IP, allowing 0 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks.
  • Joshua Dew struck out the only batter he faced for his 12th save. Why just use him for 1 batter, I wonder?
  • Daniel Descalso went 2 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBI.

Johnson City 7, Bristol 4 7 innings

  • Andres Rosales allowed a run on 6 hits while striking out 8 in 4 innings. The Columbian hurler is listed as 6 feet tall and 140 pounds. Someone get this kid a sirloin. Last year for the DSL team he struck out 63 in 44 IP.
  • Pete Kozma went 2 for 3 with a walk.
  • Jonathan Edwards went 2 for 3, homering and driving in 5.
  • Travis Mitchell went 2 for 4 with a double.
  • Nicholas Vera went 3 for 4.

Johnson City 4, Bristol 3
Game 2

  • Pete Kozma committed his 10th fielding error, and at the plate 0 for 2 with 2 walks and a K.
  • Ateo Folli hit a 3 run homer and walked twice.
  • Joseph Hage went 2 for 3 with a double and a steal. After posting a 1.166 OPS for the GCL team over a week’s worth of games, he has a sub .600 OPS for JC over 155 at bats.

GCL Cardinals 4, GCL Marlins 5

  • The team was held to just three hits, yet scored 4 times due to drawing 4 walks, 2 HBP, 3 errors and 5 stolen bases.
  • Mark McCormick sighting. He pitched 2 perfect innings, getting 1 ground out and 5 fly outs. No walks, no strikeouts. Is this the right Mark McCormick?
  • Matthew North, another rehabber was the main culprit, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits over 2 innings.
  • Charles Kingrey struck out all three times he came to the plate.

  1. How about Family Mathers?

  2. The Mather of the Universe? If we could get someone name Beeman to play on the same team, the introductions would be brilliant.

  3. Descalsco move to 2B? Do you think that may happen because of his power deficiency?

  4. speaking of descalso, that infield situation is going to be a little crowded in quad cities next year. tony cruz is looking like he could use some more time in quad cities and descalso doesn’t look like he is ready for the typical early round college player jump from the NYPL to palm beach causing a problem at third. pete kozma is going to be the starting shortstop for that team, but oliver marmol isn’t ready to move up. descalso can play 2nd, but you also have jose garcia already in quad cities and likely heading back next year and mike folli has been pretty good at johnson city.

i would go with cruz at thrid, kozma at short, and descalso at second with jose garcia getting plenty of at bats at all 3 spots. i don’t know where that leaves marmol.

  5. descalso is a 2b in pro ball. he has been all season at batavia. he was selected in the 3rd round b/c of his bat, but has been pegged for 2b since the draft.

  6. he hasn’t been a 2b the whole season, he has split time between 2b and 3b and probably has more time at 3b. now i agree that for him to project as a regular he needs to be able to play 2b, but he hasn’t shown an ability to do so yet.

  7. how about mather of his domain?

  8. How about “This one Mathers”

  9. I think any Mather nickname has got to include a lisp:

    Mathter of the Univerthe

    Mathter of Dithathter

    Etc.

  10. Beat me to it Erik—Mather of his own domain

  11. Mather Facker!

  12. Under the TL Player of the Week thread it says Cardinals catcher Colby Rasmus. One would think you can atleast get that info right.

  13. Joey “masher” mather
