Can’t get enough Amaury Cazana Marti? Kary Booher has a piece on him.
If you don’t know already, I’m a huge fan of the “Get to know the Swing” series. Huge fan! Tonight, Chuckie Fick!
What is your favorite TV show?
Seinfeld.
Exellent choice. My favorite Seinfeld episode is “The Subway“.
What are three things that can always be found in your refrigerator?
Smart water, turkey, and Naked Juice.
I don’t know what Smart water is but I know that Naked Juice is one of the nastiest things I’ve ever tasted. It’s some kind of organic juice from hell — gross.
What secret talent do you have that people might find surprising?
I’m extraordinary at rock, paper, scissors.
Bring it!
Springfield gets rained out. Keisler comes back to earth. Allen Craig continues to hit. Steve Hill goes boom. Who is Mike Venafro? It’s your Daily Prospect Report.
- Brian Barden went 2-for-4 with a double.
- Randy Keisler allowed 5 ER in 7.1 innings on 7 hits and 5 walks. I was getting a little concerned that the Cardinals would think he was a good pitcher as he strung together decent outings but this is a nice reminder that he’s nothing more than a minor league roster filler.
- Mike Venafro? Came over from the International league? Let’s see who can figure out how this happened first — go, go gadget commenters.
Springfield got rained out. Double header tomorrow.
- Allen Craig went 2-for-3 with a double and a HBP.
- Luke Goresett went 2-for-4 with a double.
- The big story here is obviously Mark Mulder. He went 1.1 innings allowing 4 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and 1 BB. Not a great start but he hasn’t pitched in a game in a year so a little rust undoubtedly needs to be shaken off.
- Steve Hill goes 2-for-4 with a HR.
- Arnoldi Cruz goes 2-for-4.
- Shaun Garceau goes 5 strong innings allowing 2 hits and 1 BB while striking out 4. He also recored 8 of 11 outs on BIP via the groundout.
- Micheal Schellinger allowed 1 hit in 3 innings while striking out 2.
- Tommy Pham went 3-for-4 with a double. He also stole his 12th base.
- William Groff went 3-for-4.
- Ryan Riddle struck out 2 in 1 inning allowing just a hit.
- Clayton Long struck out 5 in 3 scoreless innings allowing a hit and a walk.
Johnson City 9, Elizabethton 4
- Peter Kozma went 2-for-5 with a HR and a double.
- Jon Edwards went 1-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
- Travis Mitchell went 3-for-5 with a double.
- Omar Javier struck out 4 in 4 innings against 4 BBs and 2 hits allowing 1 run.
- Reynier Gonzales was all over the place as the starter walking 3 and throwing 4 wild pitches.
GCL Cardinals 2, GCL Mets 9 (Game 1: 7 innings)
- 1B Gerard Haran collecte 3 BBs.
- Jairo Martinez went 1-for-2 with a triple.
- All the pitchers got lit up.
Game 2 for the GCL Cardinals is not updated yet. (I don’t see a game log on the Website — I’m guessing this was postponed.)

Just a little extra note on the Mulder outing. Mulder actually left the game with the bases loaded, having hit his pitch limit, and P.J. Walters allowed the three inherited runners to score. Not that it matters all that much, but just to give a better idea of how he looked, he was pretty good in the first, then wasn’t quite as sharp in the second.
Baron: PJ Walters throws for Springfield, It was Furnish who allowed the inherited runners to score.
Crap. Yeah, you’re right. I had two things in mind at once, and I stuck the wrong pitcher in there. Thanks for catching it.
Perhaps Tommy Pham can be a relevant prospect next year. I would like to see a better OBP (more BB) and more power.
Mike Venafro is a left handed specialist with over 300 games in the majors. He pitched in the playoffs with the Rangers, Oakland, and the Dodgers. Overall his numbers are not bad and has a 2.78 ERA this year in AAA ball. He had a 0.00 ERA in 10 apperances in major league spring training with the Twins. They were pretty stupid to send hime to AAA ball. He is often passed by because he is not huge, but he is extremely effective against lefties and rarely gives up the homerun bomb. He has a 3/4 delivery and throws over the top occasionally as well really messing with the hitters. I am guessing he will be in the majors in September.
i am a seinfeld fiend. one of my many favs is The Muffin Tops. I love the whole bit where kramer shows jerry his chest hair “look at me!”
That article wasn’t too full of praise for Marti. More like the opposite. For some reason, I think the fastball would be the easiest pitch to figure out how to hit. If he is so strong, why is his bat so slow it can’t catch up to fastballs?
Is he the bizzarro Pedro Cerrano? (To stay on the Seinfeld topic.)
From the MemphisRedbirds site:
08/14/07 Transaction Memphis Mike Venafro signed
08/14/07 Transaction Memphis Brian Barden signed
08/14/07 Transaction Memphis Hugo Castellanos added to the disabled list
08/14/07 Transaction Memphis Jolbert Cabrera released
Here’s a news release:
Notes: Brian Barden joined the Redbirds in time to start at third base last night after being claimed from the Diamondbacks on waivers. He replaces Jolbert Cabrera, who was released following Monday night’s game…RH Hugo Castellanos was placed on the DL. Veteran lefty Mike Venafro has been added to the roster. He was granted his release July 31 by the Toronto Blue Jays. He had been pitching for their Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse.
I didn’t realize Cabrera had been released. Doesn’t upset or surprise me, but they really should have informed me.
Matt Trent has also been traded to the rockies for future considerations
Hook me up with some links, y’all.
I liked Trent but it’s not a loss to the organization.
I love seeing Kozma hit for power…
