I’m dealing with writer’s block as of late. It happens. . .
I did watch the movie “The Number 23” tonight. It was crappy. Today’s date is 8+8+7 = 23. Don’t bother to rent this movie.
Here’s an article on Clayton Mortenson. I don’t know who formats these online articles but they need to return to 3rd grade so that they can learn that every sentence does not constitute a new paragraph. It’s a human interest piece so don’t look for massive amounts of insight into his effectiveness. The part I did find interesting is that he’s on a strict pitch count for the rest of the season.
Eric Haberer likes peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. Yes, that is disgusting. Kary Booher discusses his status with regards to the 40-man-roster and the Rule 5 draft. Players that probably don’t need to be on the 40-man roster: Kelvin Jimenez, Randy Keisler and Travis Hanson. Without knowing who else needs to be protected next year, I’d certainly put Haberer on the list by his own merits for a season. I don’t think he’ll ever reach the majors but I don’t think anyone is going to come in and try and steal Travis Hanson from the Cardinals. Haberer is a lefty that induces a decent number of groundballs — he’s a longshot, but he’s someone I’d be careful about leaving unprotected.
Not a good day for the farm system. Lots of pitchers imploding. Steve Hill continues to hit for Quad Cities. Nick Stavinoha struggles at Memphis (but not tonight) and the lower minors put Azru to sleep. It’s in tonight’s. . . yawn. . .zZzZzZzZzZzZz
- Brendan Ryan and Jarrett Hoffpauir both go 2-for-5. Hoffpauir doubled and Ryan stole his 13th base.
- Nick Stavinoha went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. I’m curious as to whether Stavinoha was promoted to agressively. If you look at his numbers at firstinning, you can see a decided decline from year to year but he wasn’t that great at AA last year. He’s been plauged by injuries in the past but I think we have to label this season as a disappointment.
- Mike Parisi allowed 5 ER in 6 innings but was plagued by the long ball allowing 4 HRs. He was lucky that 3 of the 4 were solo shots of the night could have been decidedly worse.
- Troy Cate got lit up for 6 runs in his inning of work.
- Jose Martinez went 2-for-5 with a HR.
- Cody Haerther belted 3 doubles in 5 ABs.
- Juan Lucena went 3-for-4 with a HR.
- Adam Daniels and Nick Webber combined to allow 12 runs in 4 innings. Not a good night for that pair — Daniels in particular was terrible and hasn’t had a dominating start since July 5th.
- In the last 5 innings, Chris Russ, Matthew Scherer, Mike Sillman and Jason Motte combined to allow 1 hit and 2 BBs while striking out 8.
- Allen Craig went 3-for-4 with a HR.
- Luke Gorsett and Donovan Solano each collected 2 hits.
- Adam Ottavino allowed 4 ER in 6.1 innings on two 2-run HRs. He walked 0 and struck out 5 while allowing 5 hits.
- Robert Ransom and Donnie Smith imploded for the remaining 9 runs.
- Daryl Jones went 2-for-4 with a triple.
- Steve Hill went 3-for-3 with a walk and is now batting .369/.393/.569 — Steven, please continue to mash the ball but take a walk on occasion as well. Right now he’s surviving on a completely unsustainable BABIP and BIP composition. His line looks a lot like Brandon Buckman’s at QC earlier this season.
- Tyler Herron threw 5 innings allowing 3 hits, 3 BBs, 2 HBP and striking out 4. He could have been saddled with more than 1 ER had the base runners been clustered more.
- Kyle Sadlowski struck out 2 in 2 innings and Kenny Maiques pitched a perfect 9th striking out 1.
- Tyler Henley went 1-for-3 with a walk.
- Daniel Descalso went 2-for-3 with a triple and his 10th stolen base.
- Andrew Brown went 2-for-4 with a HR.
- All the Batavia pitchers stunk.
Johnson City 1, Elizabethton 7
- The JC Cardinals were wrapping up a game from July 24th.
- Casey Mulligan and Matthew Arburr went 2-for-2.
- Omar Javier allowed 7 runs in a single inning.
Johnson City 2, Elizabethton 5 (7 innings)
- Pete Kozma went 1-for-4.
- Nick Vera hit a double for JC’s only extra base hit.
- Mike Folli went 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Raymond Silva struck out 2 and walked 1 in an inning of work.

Wilmer Alvarado who Luhnow said had the most major league upside of any 3B prospect in the Cardinal system in a VEB interview earlier this year was released.
Luhnow really does come across as a salesman sometimes. I applaud his enthusiasm, but the Alvarado thing is hard to swallow at face value.
Milb.com lists Wilmer Alvarado as a right-handed batter and a switch thrower. Sup with that?
One of my best buddies loves Peanut Butter and Pickle sandwiches, he has been trying to get me to try it for the longest time but i’ve been able to avoid it so far.
And yes, The Number 23 sucks. Jim Carrey should just stick to comedy, seriously.
No doubt, who casted that movie anyways I mean, someone actually thought, “this is a good idea” maybe jim carrey would make a great Bonds someday
Are they fried pickles or just regular? Bread and butter or dill?
What does that mean? Herron could have been saddled with more runs had the runners been clustered more. Thats one of the dumbest comments I’ve ever read.
After a disappointing season with the wood bat, Kyle Russell has come alive at the NBC World Series with various Cardinals scouts in attendance. His grand slam to left center last night finished off Park City, KS. The Foresters play the Cape Girardeau Capahas tonight.
This was Russell’s third strong game in a row, probably his best streak of the season.
unclegrub–good to hear he’s mashing when the right people watching.
Bob - Let’s play a game. We each get 8 baserunners like Herron allowed: 2 HBP, 3BBs, 2 singles and a double in 5 innings. Since you don’t care how hits/runners are clustered or distributed, I’ll take care of yours for you. Your hits will go like this: 1 single, 2 HBP in the first then three outs. 1 single and 2 BBs in the second and then three outs. a double and a walk in the 4th then three outs. You score no runs.
My baserunners will go walk, hbp, hbp, double then three outs in the second. In the 5th inning I’ll have a walk, walk and consectuive singles. I score 5 runs. You lose - everytime.
Herron wasn’t getting many groundballs and had zero DP occur behind him. If his baserunners had been redistributed, the outing could have looked very different. The next time you come on the site and proceed to insult my intelligence, do some homework first or maybe try and think about what I’ve written instead of dismissing it.
I kind of agree with Bob, that could be said of any pitcher in any game, take Kip Wells game last night, if all the hits were in a row he would have lost the game, that wasn’t case and usually isn’t.
“that could be said of any pitcher in any game”
Yes you can apply this to a lot of situations but the reverse applies as well. Sometimes pitchers allow 3 baserunners but they all score. The point is that Herron stranded 87.5% of his runners last night which is an inordinately high rate.
“if all the hits were in a row he would have lost the game, that wasn’t case and usually isn’t.”
Did you see the Cardinals string together 10-hits against Wells? That was the case and it does happen. Herron’s 1-run outing looks nice from a results based standpoint but results based analysis isn’t a predictor of future success. If I told you Herron’s WHIP was 1.6 would you think that corresponds to an ERA of 1.80? (ERA and WHIP aren’t good yardsticks either — just proving a point.) The luck component of balls in play is often the difference between a 3-run inning and a 1-run inning.
I must’ve overlooked that comment, but this goes for Bob or anyone here. There will be no insults, no flame wars, or anything of the like. Those types of comments will be deleted and you will find yourself banned. Go to Cards Talk with that sort of crap, got it?!?

The article on Clayton Mortenson only looks weird because you’re viewing it online. You wouldn’t even notice it if you were reading the printed newspaper.
First of all - Thanks as always for the info. Bob was obviously out of line.
Now for my gripe! I really like Stavinoha and think he had done a solid job in AAA. You have to take into consideration the fact that he is 25 and had an 800 OPS last year in AA. The good news is that he has great platoon splits - 900+ OPS against lefties (i.e. quite possibly the lefty masher we sync up with a Edmonds, Ank, Dunc next year).
I see that as a very useful player if the Platoon splits hold. Especially considering his lofty $15K signing bonus in the ‘05 draft. So for me, not a dissapointment. I would rather see a guy with the split above then if he had no split and an OPS of 800 this year at AAA….
cariocacardinal - I missed your comment previously. I still see Alvarado on the JC roster, what makes you say he was released?
RE: Wilmer-Scout.com reported it, apparently.
