I carefully considered singling out Jarrett Hoffpauir as a possible sleeper last season. He was pretty much an unknown middling middle infielder, hitting just .249/.337/.359 for AA Springfield last season. What made me even consider him was his good 11.8% walk rate, a 9% strikeout rate. With that sort of plate discipline it seemed like [...]

I remember the days when Rick Ankiel was hitting HRs in Memphis. I kind like it when he belts a grand slam out of Busch III. Let’s head straight into tonights DPR.

As I’m sure many of you have already heard, the Cardinals have acquired the free-swinging Russ Branyan. As a member of the Three True Outcome cult, I kinda actually like it. Emphasis on the word kinda. Finding out the PTBNL for Maroth was Lambert was a relief, and a happy occasion. Waiting for the other [...]

Everywhere you read Ian Kennedy, try reading PJ Walters instead. Kevin Goldstein does a very nice job articulating why everyone should (in general) temper they’re expectations of soft-tossing command and control pitchers.
Let’s start with the basics on a scouting level. Kennedy is smallish (6′0), and his best pitch is a power changeup, which features [...]

Lambert was the PTBNL for Mike Maroth. No great loss here as Lambert had made zero strides towards making himself a servicable pitcher of any kind. Best of luck to the Tigers in trying to fix him. The potential is there but I don’t think he’ll ever reach it.

The Memphis Redbirds are a bad team this year — possibly on a historic scale. Also in the article, it discusses the fact that the contract St. Louis has with Memphis is up after 2008. I expect them to re-up on that deal. The relationship has been good for both sides in [...]

Lot’s o’ stuff today. The big news of the day, Allen Craig gets the call up to AA. Sifting through his peripheral stats he’s done some pretty impressive stuff. He leaves 6th in the FSL in isolated power with a .218 and is tied for 3rd in line drive rate with 21%. 12.1% of the [...]

I’m a real believer in freely available talent. There are still market inefficiencies to be capitalized on in today’s MLB. One of those is the 5th starter. I’d personally like to see the 4-man rotation employed but in all honesty we know that isn’t going to happen. So let’s try for [...]

Colby Rasmus was named the Texas League Player of the Week for the 2nd straight time.

Thanks for your time today Kenny. First of all, congrats on setting the saves record for the Swing.
Thank you very much.
I see that you are from Whitter, CA. Were you a Dodger fan growing up?
Truthfully I don’t watch a whole lot of sports, but yeah I really was because my grandparents are true Dodger fans [...]

I almost feel like it’s the final week of school. The minor league schedule is hurtling to an end. The GCL and Appy league team are done this week. Batavia is done 9/7. The other teams are done by 9/3. Don’t fret, die hard prospect freaks. There is the playoffs, and Springfield and The Quad [...]
