Must read material-Lboros has some q+a with Jeff Luhnow regarding Arnoldi Cruz, Tyler Herrron, Jose Martinez, Steve Hill, and more.
Daniel Berk of MLB.com takes a look at the struggles of Colby Rasmus. Sinus infections, youth, whatever the reasons…I just want to see him stop striking out so freakin’ much and start driving the ball. Maybe we should start sending some sort of good thoughts, karma, prayers, voodoo or whatever else his way.
Two of my pet draft picks were honored today, as Jesse Todd was last weeks’ NY-Penn pitcher of the week, while Steve Hill took the honors for player of the week for the Midwest League. Hill was 14 for 30 with 3 homers while Todd struck out 15 in just 8 innings while allowing 1 run.
Springfield was off tonight. Injured Birds made their return as Tyler Johnson pitched for Memphis, Reid Gorecki was on rehab assignment for the GCL team, and Allen Craig was hitless for PB in his first game back.
Rick Ankiel went yard yet again. Clayton Mortensen is the man. There were two walk off hits. And Pete Kozma!
- Tagg Bozied had a huge night, going 4 for 4 with 2 homers.
- Rick Ankiel hit a 3 run homer.
- Mike Smith allowed a run on just 3 hits while striking out 6 in 7 innings. Hurray for Quad A.
- Tyler Johnson struck out 1 and retired all 3 batters he faced.
- Luke Gorsett hit his first HR with Palm Beach, a walkoff.
- Trey Hearne allowed 2 earned runs over 5 innings.
- A.J. Van Slyke hit 3 doubles.
- Clayton Mortensen allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits and a walk, while striking out 7 in 5 innings. He also had a 7 to 1 ground out to fly out ratio.
- Nick Derba went 3 for 4 with a double and threw out a basestealer.
- Steve Hill went 2 for 5.
- Daryl Jones drew a couple walks and stole a base.
- Brandon Garner struck out 5 in 3.2 innings
- Ross Oeder went 2 for 4 with a stolen base.
- William Groff went 2 for 5.

- Deryk Hooker stuck out 4 batters while allowing a hit and a walk over 3 IP.
- Fransisco Samuel allowed just 2 hits but walked 4 batters to allow 2 runs, while striking out 4 in 4 innings.
- Edgar Lara walked, tripled and struck out twice.

- Reid Gorecki sighting. He went grounded out and flied out twice.

its “el sombrero del oro”
Any chance that the Cardinals get any noobz into the Top 100?
Deryk Hooker needs to be moved up. Also, is Batavia just completely devoid of any real talent? Their whole roster has awful stats.
Awful stats they do have mike, other then jess todd, josh dew, and pete parise. they still have some interesting players on the squad who are underperforming, IE Descalso, Marmol, Eager (who’s coming around after his last 2 starts), blake king. And they had David Kopp, but i think i read he’s been shut down due to arm troubles.
Ryan, I am thinking the Cards have either 4 or 5 in the top 100 this coming year. Rasmus and Anderson are foregone conclusions. Probably both will be top 50. Garcia will almost certainly be there again. Perez and Hamilton are knocking at the door and Walters and Ottavino seem to be closing in too.
Chris Perez was promoted to AAA.
Does this mean Perez will be with the big club in April?
We just picked up Piniero for some reason. If this sends Reyes back down to Memphis I am going to be a very angry man.
Regarding Batavia:
From what I’ve read, it’s a uniquely crappy hitting environment. The players who look good in the stat sheet tend to be guys like Tony Cruz and Steve Hill, who spend a short time there, hit a lot of singles, and move up quickly.
If you’re a prospect who gets assigned to Batavia, you’d better hope for a fast start with a high BABIP. If you get off to a slow start or have the misfortune of hitting balls into gloves, you’re going to have ugly stats.
Over time, I wouldn’t be surprised to see that the best hitting prospects in the org are the guys who skip over the NY-Penn League altogether. Albert never played there, nor did Chris Duncan, Yadi, Colby, Jay …
Erik- David Kopp was shut down due to tendonitis in his right arm/shoulder. Probably will be back for the instructional league in Sept.
It was mentioned above that Allen Craig was hitless in his first game back for PB, but the box score for that game shows that he got a two out, game-tying 2-run double in the 7th inning and ended up 1 for 4.
