• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Daily Prospect Report 7/19/07

BA has some mideason minor league AllStar teams. Bryan Anderson gets an honorable mention while Allen Craig, Rick Ankiel and Joe Mather all qualify for the “All Surprise Team”. I’m going to come up with an All-Gimmicky-Reason-To-Make-A-List Team one of these days. It’ll include everyone who a) hit into a triple play in the minors b) hit an inside the park homerun and c) pitched a no-hitter. I may also pick some players for their name cache because the other reasons don’t have quite enough gimmick to them.

Damn but I love these Swing “Meet the Prospect” pieces. Meet Tim Dorn.

Do you have any superstitions? What are they?
I run five sprints before each game.

I don’t run five sprints ever. Unless there was a disease ridden beast chasing me, I like to avoid any activity that looks like sprinting.

Who is your favorite musician and why?
Bert McCracken from “The Used.” He has a great voice and plays a good piano.

Not bad taste in music at least.

What has been the highlight of your career up to this point?
Getting brought into this organization.

Tim, what’s that brown stuff on your nose?

Ahhh, these questionnaires just crack me up! The rest of the news was covered yesterday in the thread below.

Cory Rauschenberger shuts down the opposition but gets upstaged by PJ Walters. Jon Jay returns to the lineup and Beau Riportella continues to hit. Guess what! Some of our teams won some games tonight. Find out who in the Daily Prospect Report.

Memphis 1, Oklahoma 7

  • Jarrett Hoffpauir scores the only run for the Redbirds after taking a walk.
  • Tagg Bozied went 0-for-1 but walked 3 times.
  • The Cardinals got shut down by Edison Volquez of the Rangers organization. Part of the uber-hyped DVD trio of Diamond-Volquez-Danks, expectations for Edison are probably lower than they were a year ago (same can be said for Diamond).
  • Mike Smith got lit up for the Redbirds.
  • Mark Worrell struck out 1 and allowed a hit in 2.1 innings.

Springfield 1, Wichita 0

  • Bryan Anderson and Jose Martinez both collected 2 hits.
  • Juan Richardson hit a double in his only at bat and drew 2 walks.
  • Cory Rauschenberger threw 7 scoreless innings. I’m torn about this because I’m not a C.R. fan (not only because his last name is so flippin long) so I’ll tell you that he had some good and bad parts to this outing. Bad first: 9 hits + 2 BBs + HBP indicates that he probably wasn’t that dominant. Good: 10:6 GO:AO and 3 K. He was most likely saved by the 3 double plays and 2 outfield assists.
  • Kyle McClellan and Chris Perez both strike out 2 and walk one in scoreless innings. McClellan also allowed a hit as his scoreless innings streak is up to 11.1

Palm Beach 2, Jupiter 4

  • Jon Jay DH’d and went 1-for-4. I’d love for them to figure out what’s wrong with his shoulder. If he needs to sit for a few weeks, then sit him. Send him to fall instructional league to get some more at bats but this on-again-off-again shenanigans is maddening.
  • Dan Nelson went 0-for-1 but walked 3 times. He’s walking in 15% of his at-bats. That’s the second best rate in the FSL.
  • PJ Walters went threw 7 dominant innings striking out 9 allowing 6 hits, 1 BB and 1 HBP. He also recorded 9 of 11 BIP outs as groundballs.
  • Luke Gregerson blew the save by letting the opposition steal bases and hit singles. Tough loss.

Quad Cities 4, Great Lakes 3

  • Everyone’s favorite mystery man Arnoldi Cruz went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • SS Christian Lopez went 2-for-4 with a HR.
  • Clay Mortenson went 4 innings. He allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6 for 2 ER.
  • Kyle Mura struck out 2 in a scoreless 8th.
  • Kenny Maiques picked up the save despite allowing a solo HR in the 9th.

Johnson City 3, Greeneville 0

  • Mike Folli went 1-for-3 with 2 BBs.
  • Joseph Hage wnet 2-for-5.
  • Beau Riportella went 3-for-4 and stole his 8th base.
  • Tyler Leach threw 5 innings striking out 6 against 1 BB and 1 hit.
  • Charlie Fick went 4 innings allowing 2 hits and a walk while striking out 3. He’s been much better than anticipated thus far.

Johnson City 5, Greeneville 4

  • Jon Edwards went 0-for-2 with a pair of BBs.
  • Casey Mulligan went 1-for-3 with a walk and 3 RBI. Casey Mulligan went 1-for-3 with a walk. (Get it? Mulligan — I know you come here for my jokes moreso than the prospects. It’s okay to admit it.)
  • Travis Mitchell was playing CF today and went 3-for-4 with a triple.
  • LaCurtis Mayes struck out 2 in 2 innings allowing only 1 hit.

  1. I just returned from the Springfield game and I have to bring recognition for Jose Martinez. At twenty years old he, in my opinion, has the best glove in the league that I’ve seen. It’s really surprising how well he handles himself at this level. He has really hit into a lot of bad luck in the games I’ve watched, but he always seems to make contact and have good at bats. he’s unsung, and I wondered why he was brought to double A initially, but now I realize he could make a very nice utility player for a big league club.

  2. You honestly think they are ever going to figure out what’s going on with Jay’s shoulder? Not a chance. The Cardinals hate shoulders. Believe they’re an extraneous, vestigial joint leftover from evolution, much like the appendix. It doesn’t help you, but if something goes wrong with it, then you’re in trouble. Just like the shoulder.

The Cardinals have actually put an ambitious new plan into place that would remove the shoulders of all players in their system by late 2009. The humerus will be connected directly to the scapula and the ribcage by steel bars. Casters will then be affixed to the players’ feet to facilitate the sort of whirling action that will take our shoulderless all stars to meteoric heights. I have put in a request to the team that they change the franchise name to the Cyclones, but they’re pretty hung up on the whole sea of red thing. Personally, I think a sea of sandy yellow or dark grey, to simulate some sort of spinning weather phenomenon, would be equally sellable.

Also, AZ, I’m not familiar with the player, so I don’t know, but which is the correct spelling of Mulligan’s last name? I’m hoping the first is wrong, thus heightening your humour powers, but, looking at the link, I think you may have missed on try #2. Hopefully I’m not making myself look dumb by missing some suttle twist of yours.

I have to say, I’m awfully excited to see Travis Mitchell doing fairly well this season. He’s a local kid, I believe he’s from Chesterfield or St. Charles, somewhere out west. Always nice to see the guys from the team’s own fanbase in the organisation. Makes it even easier to cheer for them, and the player feels a genuine connection to the fans that you don’t see very often in the modern game.

  3. Crap. Strike that. Mulligan’s *FIRST* name. I’ve been doing that a lot lately. It’s a shame I enjoy huffing paint for breakfast so much; I think that it may be

  4. Baron - I’m only allowed one ‘y’ per line.

It’s a contractual obligation, I may get fired now.

  5. I went to school and played high school ball with Travis Mitchell at Parkway Central in Chesterfield. He has tremendous baseball skills with plenty of drive to have a decent chance to make it to the bigs. He’s very quick, has great bat speed, his defense is great and has a great arm. I really hope he keeps his hot hitting going so he can earn a promotion.
