Horrible news on Tyler Greene, he reinjured his knee on in his first at bat back from the DL. Per Kary Booher-
Tyler Greene’s return to the Springfield Cardinals lineup lasted only three pitches Sunday night, and his immediate future does not appear favorable.
Greene swung at an 0-2 fastball from Ken Chenard in his first plate appearance in the Cardinals’ game tonight against the Frisco RoughRiders and immediately fell to the ground, writhing in pain and holding his right knee.
That’s just awful.
And weird news regarding Memphis catcher Brian Esposito, who was arrested on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, public intoxication and resisting official detention. Esposito was struck by an officer’s baton on his legs. Very nice.
The Futures Game was kinda fun. Bryan Anderson was run on, rather I should say his pitchers were the ones being run on. I was impressed with his quickness and throwing accuracy, he did manage to nail one of four. He also grounded out to first and struck out swinging on a curveball that made him look sorta bad. Rasmus flied out twice. BA has the whole scoop on the game.
Let’s jump right into the scores.
The ex-Springfielders had a good day at the plate. Joe Mather went 2 for 4 with a double and Jarret Hoffpauir went 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI. Tagg Bozied hit a 2 run homer. Rick Ankiel went 1 for 4, knocking in a run. Quad Aer Mike Smith pitched a gem, going 6 innings and striking out 7 while allowing just 1 run on 3 hits and a walk. Brian Falkenborg allowed 2 hits in the 9th but was able to pull out his 20th save, as if saving a 3 run lead is that difficult.
Cory Rauschenberger pitched a complete game, allowing just a run on 6 hits and a walk, striking out 7 and getting 13 outs on the ground. I’ve been pretty down on the Rauschenwrecker, but that is a very nice game he threw. Kudos. Jose Martinez and Mark Shorey both homered and Sean Danielson, Juan Lucena and Juan Richardson each went 2 for 4.
Palm Beach 4, Brevard County 5
The good news for the big club is that Chris Carpenter was sharp, allowing no runs on 2 hits and a walk, striking out 2 over 3 innings. An emailer by the name of Blake was on the spot, and here’s a brief breakdown on what he saw: “1st: 10 pitches(88-92mph), 7 strikes, 0 hits 2nd: 12 pitches (87-93mph, one curve at 74mph), 10 strikes, 2k’s, 1 hit 3rd: 17 pitches (87-91mph, three curves at 69, 74,74), 9 strikes, 1 walk, 1 hit.” He was followed by Eddie Degerman, who so far isn’t handling his promotion that well. Over 3 innings he allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and a walk, with no K’s. Isaias Garcia went walked and 1 for 3 with a homer. Jon Jay went 2 for 4.
Chris Grossman had a huge day at the plate, going 4 for 4 with 2 homers and 5 RBI. Christian Reyes, Luke Gorsett and Donovan Solano all had 2 hit games. Brandon Dickson was the starter for the game, he allowed all 4 of the Snappers runs over 8 hits and a walk, striking out 2 and induced 8 ground ball outs. Kenny Maiques pitched a perfect 9th.
Clayton Mortensen was the tough luck loser, he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7 over 3.2 innings. Clayton Long allowed just a hit over 3.1 innings but walked 3 with 3 K’s. Justin Roberson went 3 for 3 with a steal.
Ateo Folli drove in 2 runs and went 2 for 4. Adron Chambers appears to have been pulled from the game after 1 at bat, wonder what’s happening there. Matt Arburr did well in his stead, smacking 2 doubles. Jonathan Edwards also went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. Jose Arredondo started, he allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits and 3 walks over 4.1 innings. Nick Additon stuck out 3 in 3 innings, allowing 4 hits.
The Gary Daley pick from last year is starting to look like a real turd. He allowed 4 runs on 2.1 innings 3 hits and 4 walks in his rehab start. He struck out 3. Sorry, he should be dominating these 17-18 year olds, not getting lit up by them. Deryk Hooker on the other hand was dominating, striking out 5 of the 7 batters he faced over 2 innings, allowing just a hit. Edgar Lara went 1 for 4 with a double and a walk. 17 year old shortstop Romulo Ruiz went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI. Brian Buck struck out in all three of his at bats. Fabian Marquez went 2 for 5.

Tyler Greene’s knee looked horrible as he went down. It buckled under him and he laid on the ground for quite some time. It was one of the most painful things I’ve ever seen in person.
They really need to find a way to get jay back to springfield.
Nice job on Sunday with the live Futures Game thread.

Couple questions….
1- Wasn’t it pretty well established prior to the draft that Russell was looking for a 1.1 million signing bonus? and if it was why would the Cardinals use a 4th round pick on him knowing this and then possibly not sign him? Was he trying to control where he went by making those demands?
2- How much of a pitchers park does Quad Cities play in?
3- Tyler Herron has given up 1 home run in 86 innings! I have seen him mentioned by Keith Law as an up and coming prospect and was wondering what people thought his upside was seeing that he was drafted out of h.s. and is a pretty young kid.
Did we know about Colby’s sinus infection? - that’s the excuse that the P-D gives for his slump.
Wow. Very discouraging news about Greene. Sucks for the guy. Here’s hoping he rehabs well and comes back next year at 3B.
James…
1. I think the mil is pretty known, it’s just the wait and see approch. How well he does for the collegiate league may depend on whether or not the Cards decide to sign him, I guess.
2. Park Factor for the last three seasons for QC is .98. SO it’s a slight pitchers park.
3. Herron is a future #3 starter, maybe #2. I’m really high on him, he’s probably the # 2 pitcher in the Cardinal system. I’d rank them
1. Garcia
2. Herron
3. Ottavino
Thanks for the reply Erik.
– Seems pointless to use a 4th rounder on Russell (when you know his demands) if you are not willing to meet them in my opinion.
– I only saw him play once, but from the reports I have read he is average defensively with an above average arm for RF… below average speed… good plate discipline…plus power… and most concerns are about his contact rate. (He struck out in 24% of his AB’s at Texas this year) Personally in my opinon 1 million dollars for a kid who could develop into a 30 home run type guy seems pretty reasonable.
– I have become much more interested in the College and Minor Leagues since my best friend signed to play D-I ball two years ago and subsequently was drafted this year. I came across this site from vivaelbirdos and just wanted to say that I really enjoy your site and all the analysis you provide.
The Greene injury has got me thinking about the Arizona Fall League. It seems as though Greene will probably (or at least should) be going to play in the AFL if he is healthy by then because of the time he has missed/will miss with this injury. Then I was thinking about other players the Cards could send to the AFL and thought it would be interesting to speculate a bit on who they might send. Here are some options I thought of besides Greene.
1. OF Rick Ankiel (needs as many ABs as possible)
2. OF Jon Jay (has missed time due to injury)
3. 2B Jarrett Hoffpauir (Cards need to see if he is for real)
4. 1B/OF Joe Mather (Same as Hoff is he for real or just a fluke year?)
5. SS Brendan Ryan (can he start at SS next year?)
6. SP Chris Narveson (has missed a lot of time to injury)
7. SP Stu Pomeranz (hasn’t pitched b/c of injury)
8. SP Mark McCormick (maybe not experienced enough for AFL, but has been injured all year and the Cards need to see what he can do with his 100mph fastball)
9. OF Colby Rasmus (Lots of teams send their top prospects to the AFL, this seems like the year to send Colby)
10. 1B Mike Ferris (last chance to proove himself?)
Any more that I am missing? I would be interested to see how any of those guys would fare if they were in the AFL.
