Promote Allen Craig.
I just got back from the Cardinals game. Went with three of my closest college friends and had a blast . . . except for when Taguchi decided to randomly drop a ball for no valid reason. O well, we’re about prospects here at Future Redbirds, not old centerfielders that have seen a precipitous decline in their defense.
You’ll notice a Kyle Russell watch over to the left. Erik and I are both very set on getting Mr. Russell signed and we’re just trying to do our small part out here in the blogosphere. You can find his statistics for the California league he’s at right here.
I’ve got one news item for you tonight. It’s barely newsworthy but I kinda like stirring the pot from time to time. Keith Law has an up and down relationship with Cardinal fans it seemed but I thought he was quite good on draft day. Someone asked him about it in his recent espn chat, and here’s the dialogue:
Mike (San Diego): Hey love your chats and tell-it-like-it-is analysis. Saw you on the draft and you were all soft and sweet though. What gives? Did they tell you that you had to say nice things only about the picks?
Keith Law: Not at all. I liked most of the players taken in the first round. I didn’t like the Cardinals’ pick because it was too conservative, and I thought the Twins really overdrafted Revere.
Ahem. . .moving on.
Big Joe Mather’s heatin’ up. Rasmus reminds us why he’s the top prospect (and his hitting coach wants him to stop pulling the ball). Jon Jay attempts to recapture a lost season. Blake King forgets how to hit a barn with a baseball and Jesse Todd steps up in his stead. Hidey ho neighbor — it’s the Daily Prospect Report.
- Jarrett Hoffpauir started at 2nd (Gonzalez at 3rd over Hanson) and went 2-for-5 with a double.
- John Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a double and a HR.
- Joe Mather, playing center field (things I didn’t know he could do), went 1-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
- Anthony Reyes got lit up. Let’s remember that even the best pitchers have bad outings. . . but this one was symptomatic of his real problem. He allowed 3 HRs. That says it all. 6 runs in 4.2 innings.
- Mark Worrell picked up the win walking 1 and striking 1 out in the 7th.
- Andy Cavazos and Brian Falkenborg had a shaky 8th and 9th but held on.
- Casey Rowlett went 3-for-4 with a walk.
- Colby Rasmus went 4-for-5 with a double, HR and 5 RBI.
- Juan Richardson and Bryan Anderson both went 3-for-5.
- Bryan Anderson allowed his 13th passed ball. $%&^$& get this straightened out please.
- Mitchell Boggs went 6 innings and struck out 6 while allowing 1 unearned run.
- Matt Scherer allowed an earned run in his 2 innings of work striking out 1 against a walk and 3 hits.
- Kyle McClellan put up zeros in the 9th.
Palm Beach 5, Vero Beach 0 (11 innings)
- Jon Jay went 4-for-6 with 2 doubles.
- Allen Craig went 1-for-5 with a double and a walk.
- Brandon Buckman went 2-for-6.
- Chris Narveson pitched 2 innings walking 1. He allowed no hits and struck out no one. It’s a start. . .
- Robert “this was probably a fluke” Ransom threw 7 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 K.
- Jon Mikrut threw 2 scoreless innings for the win when Palm Beach put up a 5 spot in the 11t.
Palm Beach 5, Vero Beach 1 (7 innings)
- John Jay went 2-for-4 with a double and a HR. It’s fair to wonder what his season would have looked like if he hadn’t been injured.
- Brandon Buckman went 1-for-3 with a HR and a BB.
- Nathan Southard hit a HR.
- Adam Ottavino threw a complete game. In seven innings, he struck out 5, walked 1 and gave up 4 hits (including a solo HR).
- SS Donovan Solano and 1B Steve Hill both went 2-for-5.
- DH Christian Reyes hit a HR.
- Jaime Landin went 0-for-2 with a pair of BBs.
- Brad Furnish struck out 3, walked 3 and allowed 1 hit for 2 unearned runs.
- Kyle Saldowski and Marco Gonzalez pitched a pair of scoreless innings apiece.
- 1B Andrew Brown went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks.
- 3B Daniel Descalso went 2-for-4.
- Tommy Pham went 1-for-4 with a SB.
- Blake King’s command has completely abandoned him. He walked 6 batters in 2.1 innings.
- Jesse Todd threw 5 scoreless innings striking out 6 against 1 walk and 2 hits.
- CF Beau Riportella, 1B Casey Mulligan and C Paul Vazquez all had 2 hits. Riportella and Vazquez both stole a base as well.
- Omar Javier allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in 5 innings.
- The defense behind Jose Mateo was the goat as he blew the win in the 7th allowing 3 unearned runs.
GCL Cardinals game is currently suspended.

“The Official Sign Kyle Russell! Watch” is kinda despressing.
Shhh…
That is is my friend. That it is. (Sigh)
it’s a little funny/sad that we all care more about russell than pete kozma, poor fella…lol. oh and get your butt signed and down to johnson city!!!
i’m thinking pete is a given, but i believe with the new rules if they miss the boat on him this year they get an extra draft pick. wouldn’t be the end of the world. i don’t think the same rule applies to a 4th rounder. does anyone know where i can find that info?
duckymedwick7-
To me it’s more that I actually think we’ll sign Kozma, and I know we won’t sign Russell is the actual problem. Although I do think Kozma should have been signed by now. Oh, and a lot of people actually rate Russell as the better prospect anyways.
if pk doesn’t sign we get the #19 pick in 08 (drop one spot, but there is no compensatoin after the 3rd round, so no extra pick for russell.
Erik-
I believe you just get compensation through the 3rd round with the new rules, which of course works perfectly for us.
“If a team doesn’t sign a pick in the first or second round, it gets a pick in essentially the same slot in the next draft. Previously, unsigned first-rounders merited a pick at the end of the supplemental first round. Unsigned picks beyond that drew no compensation. So if the Pirates didn’t sign the No. 4 pick this year, they would get a pick just after No. 4 next year (which would be labeled as 4-A).
Unsigned third-round picks will merit a supplemental pick between the third and fourth rounds next year. The hope from MLB’s perspective is that teams will be more willing to walk away from a draft pick (and exorbitant bonus) if they know they will get an equivalent pick the next year.”
Thanks Shhhh…good info. I think Kozma is a given, but who knows, it seems sorta weird they haven’t signed him by now. Maybe they are having buyers remorse. I doubt it, but it’s been 31 days since they drafted him, so many of the top picks have already signed. Didn’t they pick Kozma because of his signability? This should’ve been a done deal weeks ago.
Which also begs the question, does Cardinal management have any idea what there doing? Because wouldn’t you take risky picks i.e. ones with signibility concerns within the first 3 rounds where you get compensation. They knew picking Russell in the 4th that there was a very good chance he wouldn’t sign, why not pick him in the 3rd, then if he doesn’t sign you get another pick next year. Also damn do I want Porcello. For Porcello it comes down to would you rather sign a league player for 3 years (Encarnacion or Looper) or have a potential ace under your control the next 10ish years. I know which one I’d pick, but the Cardinals disagree with my philosophy.
Regarding Kozma, maybe the Cards are waiting until Savery signs, and the Kozma camp is waiting for Beaven to sign, not sure. But I did hear that the Cards may have to pay Kozma more than Ahrens (who has already signed) because they said Kozma was higher on there board though. No way to know for sure.
David Delasco
or
Daniel Descalso?
Are we talking about the same guy here?
Paul Henley
Any updates on his signing? Likelihood? He is an intriguing prospect.
You have to wonder if they’re keeping Jay and Craig at Palm Beach for the sake of the team as a whole. If you remove those two guys, the only real legit hitter left at Palm Beach would be Brandon Buckman, who’s still getting adjusted to high-A ball. They may worry about how having an anemic offense may affect Buckman and the pitching staff. I don’t know about Craig, but Jay is probably still on track to start 08 at Memphis if he can put up a good half season in Palm Beach. Just speculating, but it would make some sense…
Off topic, but Derek McKamey has his top 50 prospects updated up at Baseball HQ and Colby clocks in at ten, up from 24 at the beginning of the year. Jamie Garcia jumps in at 42 up from 95. Anderson not on the list, but catchers making it are Wieters at 17, Conger at 31 and Clement at 48.
Kind of surprised Jaime is that high, I personally wouldn’t have him in my top 50. Brock, is the top 50 list there subscriber info? or free? (if free can you post a link) I’m suprised Conger is even ranked higher than Clement (let alone in the top 50), although after e-mailing writers at BA, I’ve come to learn that they absolutely love Conger and his potential ceiling.
How is Weiters above Anderson?
Because he was the 2nd best player coming out of the draft this year. Just for reference Lincecum was considered the 2nd best player in last years draft, and this draft is suppose to be better. I would have Weiters the 2nd best catcher, behind Saltalamacchia. Anderson 4th, behind Clement. With Conger being 5th.
It’s subscriber, so I’m not going to post more info. Felt comfortable giving that little amount out to you guys. Its updated so guys who are no longer eligible are off, so no Salty.
Kevin Goldstein is big on Conger as well.
sidd fynch - it’s david. . .long night/week
http://firstinning.com/players/Daniel-Descalso-a/
hopefully one day it will matter =)
haha nice quip mateodh
seriously, this is my last visit here for the next few days as you can see how addlebrained school has me.
that descalso kid i’ll call him from now on.
so this is somewhat embarassing. . . did I completely make up the name David Delasco. . .
I’ve used it in previous entries. . . and combinations of Descalso thereupon.
Albeit that there are a lot of prospects but I shouldn’t be this confused about names — it’s kinda what I’m supposed to do. . .get their names right. Ok, Daniel Descalso, Daniel Descalso, Daniel Descalso. I’ve got it now.
next year, he’ll change his name to Rauschenberger, just to spite you.
