Pitchers rock! Pitchers rock! Pitchers rock! Dominant outings from Ottavino and Herron. Palm Beach scores enough runs for a week. And I’m glad Walt Jocketty went and got Mike Maroth. . .cause Ohka, well, Ohka has seen better days. Jim Rapoport acheives a dubious distinction and ‘Promote Hoffpauir’ is my chant for the day yet again.
Here’s your Daily Prospect Report in 1…2…3…go!
- Edgar Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. (I still think it should be Hoffpauir.)
- 1-for-3 with a HR. Yes, that’s Rick Ankiel I’m writing about. He hits HRs but that’s really the extent of his game at the moment.
- Nick Stavinoha went 2-for-3.
- Travis Hanson hit a HR.
- Tomo Ohka can now be spelled D-O-N-E. Look it was worth a shot; what have the Cardinals lost? Nothing. But if Ohka wants to stay in Memphis and try and get things working more power to him. If it was me, I’d have surgery. He went 5.1 innings allowing 11 hits, striking out 2 and walking 1 for 7 ER. Yikes.
- Chris Lambert followed Ohka with an Ohka impression. Worse pick - Lambert or Ferris? Danup is currently having a Lambert related seizure somewhere in the Midwest.
- Castellanos pitched a scoreless inning.
- Jarret Hoffpauir goes 2-for-5 with a double.
- Mark Hamilton goes 2-for-4 with a double.
- PAGING MIKE MATHENY! Anderson allows his 12th passed ball.
- Mike Ferris draws another two walks. . . it’s a crazy world!
- They only allowed 2 runs but Springfield pitchers were walking a fine line all night long. Mitchell Boggs went 6.1 innings allowing 10 hits, 2 walks and 2 Ks for 2 ER.
- Jason Motte puts 2 on base via the free pass and strikes out 1 in 1.1IP.
- Chris Perez comes and promptly walks a batter. He strikes the next batter out to end the 8th. In the 9th he hits a batter and strikes out another.
Palm Beach 17, Sarasota 5 (Game 1: 7 innings)
- 17 runs in 7 innings? The STL Cardinals have scored just 12 runs in their last 6 games. And PB only hit 1 HR.
- Allen Craig went 3-for-4 with a walk, HR and 5 RBI.
- Brandon Buckman went 4-for-5.
- 2B Isaias Garcia was your offensive player of the game. 5-for-5 with 2 doubles.
- Tyler Norrick was ok but it doesn’t matter much when your team scores 17 runs. He went 5.2 innings allowing 7 hits, 4 BBs and striking out 6. He was relatively lucky to just allow 3 runs.
- I feel bad for Jose Rojas who failed to retire a batter while allowing 5 ER. Seriously, how do you go back into the dugout after crapping the bed like that?
- Back to back doubles from Jon Jay and Allen Craig scored the only run of the game.
- Jim Rapoport had a
golden sombrero. - Adam Ottavino flat out owned Sarasota. He allowed 6 singles and 2 HBP over 6 innings while striking out 5. No walks and no extra base hits. His ERA stands at 2.78.
- Luke Gregerson walked 1 in the 7th for a save.
- Daryl Jones went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
- Also collecting 2 hits, Jared Schweitzer, David Solano and Luke Gorsett.
- Tyler Herron has perhaps his best game to date. In 6 innings, he strikes out 10(!) while allowing 3 hits and 1 ER.
- Newbie Marco Gonzalez pitches a scoreless 7th striking out 1.
- Kenny Maiques allows Carrasco’s two bequeathed runners to score before closing the door on his 18th save.
- Tommy Pham went 3-for-4 with a HR but was CS.
- David Delasco went 2-for-4 with a double and a SB.
- Clay Mortenson was excellent. He went 5 innings allowing 1 hit, a walk and striking out 4.
- Clayton Long pitched 3 innings allowing 4 hits, 1 walk and striking out 3.
- Josh “Mountain” Dew came in and retired the final 2 batters striking out 1 for his second save.
GCL Cardinals’ game was suspended 0-0 vs. the GCL National in the 8th inning.

Excellent! My two favorite pitchers, Herron and Ottavino dominate!
Good evening. I read this site daily, but this is my first time commenting. I’ve just started following the Cards’ farm system consistently this year…
Any chance that Ottavino and Herron get call-ups soon? Ottavino’s 21 the entire year and Herron’s 20 until August, so they could justify leaving them where they are, age-wise. OTOH, they both are dominating their levels right now, so letting them spend the rest of the year there is only going to help their confidence (which counts for something), but may not be much of a challenge. At some point, Quad Cities may get some upward pressure from a pitcher or two at Batavia, which may force the issue
Also, I was wondering who yall think will swap places with Jon Jay when he goes back to AA, which would seem to be imminent. I think the assumption of many was that Shorey would go back down to either Quad Cities or Palm Beach, but his numbers at Springfield are really impressive, currently .871 OPS. I can’t see how you can send him down. It would seem to me that it’d make more sense to send Rowlett back to Palm Beach, where he started the year, since he’s not really doing much numbers-wise at AA. What do yall think?
I really don’t see why Hoff and E-Gon can’t live in the same box score. It’s Triple-A, shuffle the lineup a bit, mix them both in on the left side as well, at least then if neither make it as regulars they’ll have experience elsewhere.
Free Allen Craig! Yes, I know, poor Palm Beach fans, they already lost Mark Hamilton, how will they ever cope? You know, I’m starting to think this organization leaves players at a certain level to protect more important prospects. Maybe that’s not a new idea, but still we can call it the “Randy Roth Complex”. Roth was always old for his level, and it seemed like his only purpose was to serve as Colby Rasmus’ cleanup man. Maybe having Jarrett Hoffpauir on base in front of Rasmus 3 times a night is doing loads for his development. Maybe Allen Craig was meant to be Mark Hamilton’s sidekick and now he’s Brandon Buckman’s…
Sure, Degerman and Walters are old for their level and deserved promotions, but so does Tyler Herron, the man is filthy. That said, I say leave him where he is and see if he can’t string together 3 or 4 straight starts with 6+ IP, since he hasn’t been in a real rotation all season.
Also, at least Ferris has had a hot June, and I say this every time he has a hot month but, maybe, just maybe he’s coming around. Next year’s Evans/Mather? Can’t say I have any such hopes for Lambert at this point…
O
i think i am seeing why they drafted mortensen. the guy is an absolute groundball machine. last night he got 9 groundouts and only 2 flyouts, and for his short season his GO/FO ratio is an incredible 3.80.
CardFaninVA - I’m hoping that the Cardinals are at least slightly more aggressive with their promotion of some pitchers. I think I’d like to see Herron stay in QC for a while if only because they’ve just abolished the tandem starter setup so it’ll be interesting to see how hitters do against him the second or third time (although if last night is any indicator, they won’t do well). I think Ott’s promotion is totally dependent on things we can’t know from a boxscore - 1) is he throwing low in the zone and 2) has he developed an effective secondary pitch.
Casey Rowlett seems like the obvious choice to be sent down.
mateodh - I’m with you on Craig. I was hoping that Richardson was going to move up to AAA to fill in for Washington (out for the season) but that hasn’t happened yet so Craig is still mired in High-A.
