I’m not sure how post-worthy this, but trolling around at the Swing’ site, I found that the Cardinals have signed 1st baseman Tim Dorn from Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League. He’ll be stepping into Buckman’s spot as designated huge first baseman. According to his page at the Baseball Cube, Dorn was a 14th round pick of the Mariners back in 2003, as a pitcher. He only pitched 29 innings over 2 seasons for some reason or other, but struggled with control and was apparently cut. He’s been bouncing around the Indy Leagues, this go around as a hitter. He hit .327/.386/.506 last year with 10 HR and 31 walks to 76 strikeouts for Pensacola Pelicans. (”Fly Pelicans!” says Tony Montana). This season for the Miners he’s hitting .349/.421/.659 with 12 homers, 12 walks and has fanned 27 times in 129 at bats. One thing about Dorn is he’s huge, 6′8, 255, and with that size comes some power. So he may be named Dorn, but he hits (and whiffs) like Serrano. Here’s a link to his player page for the Miners. I know there are some of you out there that go to indy league games and may have seen this guy play, if so drop your thoughts of Dorn in the comments.

erik,
I have seen this guy place twice and he has tremendous raw power as evidenced by 12 HRs in 129 ABs. The problem is, his swing gets long. He is pretty good around the bag which is kind of surprising given his size. I saw him turn on a pitch and hit it about 400 feet. Awesome power.

Kudos on the Major League reference. Definitely smile worthy!
I watched Tim Dorn play a couple of weeks ago at RentOne Park in Marion, IL. He crushed two balls over the 400′ center field wall and gave the home crowd a lot to cheer about in a victory over the Slippery Rock Sliders. I mentioned to my dad after the game about indy leagues having a better chance to build a fan base because the players aren’t as likely to be called up to the next level. Shows what I know!
I’m from Southern IL.
So I’ve seen Dorn play a couple time.
I think he’s pretty amazing.
He’s deffinately going to make it in the big leagues.
Yes, indeed. As a Miner season ticket holder I saw a lot of Tim Dorn play in several games. His defense needs some improving but he has awesome power. I saw him hit a shot into the batter’s eye screen over the 400 ft center field fence. We miss him here but wish him the best!
I’m from Carterville originally and have been so excited about baseball finally coming here. I currently live and work in Springfield, MO. The greatest thing about my job is that I work for the St. Louis Cardinals AA organization here. If anyone remembers, Josh Kinney also came from the Frontier League. It would be an honor to see Tim Dorn make it to double A here in Springfield so that my connection to home feels a lot better with a player that came from Southern Illinois.
Tim is my cousin’s “little boy”!
I’m 6′2″ 200lbs and last time I saw him He DWARFED me.Musta been sumthin he ate!
We are all thirlled that he’s signed with the Cards and has a new Bride and baby, and hope he has a great career in MLB.
Yea ive see Dorn play 4 times, and he impressed me every time. This guy is huge!!! He will no doubt make a name for himself in MLB.
I watched Dorn play several games at rent one park. As stated from other posters here he has power, but it was evident he had problems hitting better pitchers,
When speed got up to 85 mph he rarely got a hit, this may be some of the problem he is having as he moved up.
He missed a lot of fat pitchs while he was a miner in southern Illinois, I wish him the best. Defensively he will be alright.
Offensively will be the spot where he may not make it.
Way back in the day i had the pleasure of hosting Tim Dorn at my house for a Babe Ruth Tournament i think i was about 11 years old at the time. We called him Tiny Tim even though obviously there was nothing tiny about him. I saw him hit 4 homeruns in that tournament and it was amazing! He is still talked about at my house for being one of the best baseball boys we ever had and not only because of his tallent but also for just being one of the nicest guys we ever had.
So Tim if you see this just know that the Kettermans are still thinking of you and we are so amazed at how far you have gotten.
your awesome dude!
