7 games to cover tonight. Let’s get to it.
- Mike McCoy makes a start a SS and goes 1-for-2 with 2 BBs at the plate.
- Nick Stavinoha and Edgar Gonzalez each go 2-for-5.
- Rick Ankiel goes 0-for-4. This is what happens when you don’t walk. Your offensive output is totally dependent on your ability to make contact and BABIP. Being able to draw a walk is a hallmark of offensive consistency.
- Rico Washington goes 2-for-3 with a BB.
- So Randy Kiesler. . .2 straight good outings. 7.1IP allowing 1 ER while striking out a whopping 8 batters. He walked 3 and allowed 6 hits.
- Mark Worrell retires two batters and strikes one out stranding two inherited runners.
- Brian Falkenborg closing it out with 1IP, 1H and 1K.
- Jarrett Hoffpauir goes 3-for-4 with a SB.
- Colby Rasmus 0-for-4 with a K. Ummmmmmm… what’s going on here?
- Bryan Anderson went 1-for-4.
- Cory Rauschenberger had a good outing for 7 innings with 3 hits, 2 runs, 3 BBs and 6 K. Between him and Kiesler my world is all flipped around tonight.
- Matthew Scherer struck out 3 in 2 innings allowing 1 hit.
- Allen Craig 2-for-5.
- Ian Church 1-for-4 with a HR.
- Brandon Buckman 0-for-5 with 2K.
- Brandon Yarbrough went 2-for-4 with a triple.
- Nathan Southard went 3-for-4.
- Some shaky defense (3 errors) behind a boatload of crappy Palm Beach pitchers made for a rough night.
- Robert Ransom started allowing 4 runs (3 earned) in 4 innings. The opposition had 9 hits off him though.
- Ever since I said I thought Scott Vander Weg was ready to move up a level, he’s tanked. He got ripped for 3 ER in .1IP tonight. Tragically, this will happen sometimes when all you can see are statistics.
- Michael Cooper, fresh off the bus from Springfield, allowed 2 runs in .2 IP.
- Trey Hearne came out of the bullpen to pitch 2 innings and allow a run. At least they are trying something different because starting was obviously not working.
- Donnie Smith was the only pitcher not to allow a run in his 2 innings of work.
- Daryl Jones went 0-for-2. BUT drew 3 walks and scored 3 runs. Hooray for walks!
- Newbie Jose Ramirez was playing CF and went 2-for-4.
- Chris Grossman and David Solano each collected 2 hits.
- Tyler Herron got roughed up allowing 6 runs on 9 hits in 4.2 IP. He struck out 5 while walking none.
- Brad Furnish pitched very well for 3.2 innings. 6Ks, 1 BB, 2 HBP and 2 hits. Thankfully. . .
- . . . Kenny Maiques came in and struck out the last batter of the game to strand the bases loaded. Say thank you Brad.
Batavia 6, Auburn 11 (Completion of June 19th game)
- Oliver Marmol went 0-for-3. BUT drew 2 walks and scored 2 runs. Hooray for walks. (I bet I’m annoying as hell to read sometimes. muahahaha)
- CF Antonio DeJesus went 2-for-5.
- Catcher Nick Derba hit a HR in his only AB and drew 3 walks.
- None of the pitchers for Batavia were very good. Clay Mortensen went 2 innings allowing 3 hits, 1 run, 1BB and 1K.
- Brandon Garner got destroyed for 6 runs in 2.1IP.
Batavia 2, Auburn 3 (7 innings)
- 1B Steve Hill went 3-for-3 and was a HR short of the cycle.
- CF Tommy Pham went 1-for-3 with a SB.
- Johnathan Stambaugh pitched 3 scoreless innings followed by 2 scoreless innings from Clayton Long. They each struck out 2 and walked 1.
- Joshua Dew screwed the pooch allowing 3 runs in the 7th inning for Auburn to pick up the come from behind win on a walk off HR. Josh, a little advice from relationship expert AZ. This is not how you make friends with your team. Don’t let it happen again. Thanks.
- DH Matthew Arburr went 2-for-4 with a triple.
- LF Brian Buck went 2-for-4 with a triple.
- SS Dognnt Bolivar went 2-for-4 with a double and a HR. Any suggestions on the pronunciation of Dognnt? Dog nut or donut are about as close to recognizable pronunciations as I can see. mmmm, donuts.
- 21 year old Jose Mateo threw 5 innings striking out 6, walking 1, and allowing 4 hits. He recorded 8 of his 9 outs in play on the ground. Well done Mr. Mateo, well done.
GCL Cardinals 7, GCL Marlins 4
- Leading off CF D’ Marcus Ingram went 3-for-5 with a double.
- Ingram had an outfield assist at home while LF Joseph Hage had one at home and one at 3rd.
- RF Edgar Lara went 2-for-4.
- The only noteworthy pitching performance was Pablo Ortiz who struck out 3 of the 5 batters he faced without allowing anyone to reach base. The other pitchers were either outright bad or had lucky performances based on the peripheral stats.
Now Tyler Henry and the Rice Owls are out of the College WS. University of North Carolina defeated them while Henley went 1-for-3 with a double and a BB for the Owls.
I’ll leave you with this bit from Kevin Goldstein, prospect guru extraordinaire from Baseball Prospectus, re: the Midwest League All-Star game:
The only player to get a hit off Watson was first baseman Brandon Buckman of Quad Cities. A 19th-round pick last year out of Nebraska, Buckman had been in contention for a Triple Crown much of the season and was the only player on the West team to have a multi-hit game. He was the biggest guy (6-6, 220 or so) in a uniform this night, his third-inning double was the second hardest hit ball of the game, and scouts were impressed with his swing, while curtailing their projections due to his age. They want to see what he’ll do at more advanced levels, but at least they’re interested. They’ll get their first shot at seeing Buckman against better competition this week, as he was promoted to High-A Palm Beach after the game.
I’m with KG all the way. He’s posting great numbers and it was time the Cardinals promoted him to see if the 23 year old was simply feasting on young pitching. (One time, Buckman walked out to the mound and simply tore the arm off the pitcher. He ground his bones to make his bread).

Colby Rasmus has got to be hurt…..tell me he’s hurt….I don’t believe that he has had a slump like this (except of course, to start play at a new level) in his 2 years in professional baseball. Kinda wierd that I would WANT him to be hurt….I don’t obviously, I would just be more comfortable with his dramatic slump if I knew there was a reason behind it that could be solved with a short stay on the DL.
1B Steven Hill is the new 1B Brandon Buckman/1B Mark Hamilton/1B Joe Mather.
Steven Hill (listed as a C by milb.com who often has that wrong), currently is the proud owner of a 2.186 OPS.
In regards to Joshua Dew, can we all agree that his nickname should be “Mountain”? Nothing would tickle me more than to hear him constantly referred to as “that young Cardinals prospect, ‘Mountain’ Dew.”
irishman,
he’s not hurt, but he’s not himself. his dad posted on another board that he got a real bad case of the flu around the beginning of june and lost about 10 pounds and he feels really weak, but he is trying to play through it.
I forget to add Chris Duncan and maybe Allen Craig to the list. Steven Hill is the new Buckman/Craig/Hamilton/Mather/Duncan. We sure have a lot of young 1B/corner OF types. Too bad all most of them will be is trade fodder b/c we have that HOF 1B already. Its nice to have guys mashing at every level though.
