erik has the news on all the latest Cardinal signings below. There’s some really interesting mediocre average pitchers that will help fill out the staffs for the two short season leagues, I’d guess.
- Skip Schumaker went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot. He was also hit by a pitch.
- Brendan Ryan continues to hit for average going 3-for-5 and stole his 12th base of the season.
- Rick Ankiel hit his 16th HR of the season.
- Randy Kiesler went 7 strong innings against the Cubs affiliate. A WHIP under 1 as he allowed 5 hits and 1 BB while striking out 6. All good for just 1 ER.
- Troy Percival struck out the first two batters he faced before allowing a single. The runner at first, Ronny Cedeno, stole second and then the last batter of the inning flew out to RF.
- Brian Falkenborg got 2 strikeouts picking up his 14th save of the season.
- Colby Rasmus went 0-for-5 with 2 Ks. He’s hitting .119 in the last 10 games and striking out in 30% of his plate appearances. erik wrote Kary Booher, the Springfield beat writer, an e-mail (erik does all the work around here — I just write pretty
) and apparently Rasmus is a little under the weather and fatigued as of late. Hopefully, it’s nothing more than that. Here’s Booher’s full response:
I spoke with Colby yesterday and he opened up that he has been under theweather lately. He said he’s kind of fatigued and it hasn’t helped.
But he did get two hits last night and, in a sign he’s lull may be over, had that big single right after the umps reversed the call on the balk and took a run off the board from the Cardinals. He’s good about coming through and making statements, and that’s what he did when he hit a single when play resumed and got the run home.
Thanks,
Kary
- 3B Juan Richardson was one of two offensive stars in the game. He went 4-for-5 with a double, HR, 3 runs scored and 2RBI.
- Jarrett Hoffpauir was the man driving him in going 4-for-5 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI.
- Mitchell Boggs allowed 8 hits and walked 2 in 6.2 innings. He struck out 6 while allowing 3 ER which could have been worse if. . .
- . . Matthew Scherer hadn’t stranded 2 of his 3 inherited runners. Scherer pitched 1.1 innings striking out 2.
- Jason Motte finished off the game with a scoreless 9th.
- [erik cutting in here] with the W the Cardinals win the Texas League North title for the 1st half.
- You’d think the Swing were playing the Royals or something.
- Let’s start out with the good. Brandon Buckman, Jared Schweitzer, Chris Grossman and David Solano all collected 2 hits. Grossman and Schweitzer also went deep.
- There’s no nice way to go about this since the pitching staff got pounded:
- Shaun Garceau: 2.2IP, 5R (2ER), 4H, 4BB, 1K,
- Michael Schellinger: .2IP, 4ER, 3H, 1BB
- Kyle Saldowski: 1.2IP, 1ER, 2H, 2K
- Eddie Degerman: 1.2IP, 5R (4ER), 7H, 4K
- Kyle Mura: 1.1IP, 2ER, 2H
- Kenny Maiques: 1IP, 1H, 1K (woo-hoo Kenny. No ER)
- I would not want to have to write the report to Luhnow about that game. Wowzer. Armando Carrasco also pitched to 1 batter in between Schellinger and Saldowski. Carrasco pegged the guy and got ejected. I’m relatively certain that every short reliever the Swing has was used in this game.
Hat tip to erik: Tyler Henley’s Rice Owls played last night plating 6 runs in the 8th for a win of the CWS game 1. Tyler was the Cardinals pick in round 8. Henley went 2-for-5.
