Nick Stavinoha hit his 5th HR of the season, going 1-4.
Mike McCoy went 3 for 3 with a run scored.
Randy Keisler, Mike Sillman, Andy Cavazos and Mark Worrell combined for the shutout. Keisler struck out 5 in 6 innings while allowing 4 hits and 4 walks.
Mike Sillman struckout all three batters he faced.
Mark Worrell struck out 1 and allowed a hit, picking up his 3rd save of the season.
***Jon Jay update.*** Prior to yesterday’s action the team put him on the disabled list. He re-aggravated his shoulder on Thursday and left the game in the first inning. That’s a shame. Casey Rowlett of Palm Beach will take his spot on the roster.
The Cardinals were held to 5 hits. One hit was a single by Colby Rasmus. Jaime Garcia had two hits. Not a good day for the offense.
The Mexicano southpaw also pitched 7 innings and allowed just two hits but he walked 3 and gave up a HR. He’s had trouble with control and keeping the ball in the park for much of the season. He struck out 4. His HR/9 rate is 1.43 and he’s walking 4.5 batters per nine innings.
The Cardinals were held to just two hits against one of the Twin’s pitching prospects Oswaldo Sosa. Sosa struck out 9 in 6 innings, allowing 1 hit and 3 walks. Their other hit and only run came off of Angel Garcia. Brandon Yarbrough had a double in a rather uneventful day for the offense.
Allen Craig struck out 3 times, going 0 for 4. Dan Nelson struck out not once, not twice, but thrice as well. Jose Martinez had the only other Cardinal hit.
Trey Hearne went 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks, striking out 2. 11 of his outs were of the ground ball variety
Quad Cities 3, West Michigan 2
Brandon Buckman goes 3 for 4 with a double. The big guy from Nebraska is really had a nice season thus far, hitting .348/.386/.620 with 9 homers in 158 at bats. That’s the best BA of any first sacker in the minors. Buckman-Hamilton-Mather-and I suppose even Bozied is pretty nice depth at the first base position, of course they all will have to move to the outfield or to another team if they ever want to get a whiff of the bigs.
Daryl Jones went 2 for 4 with a double. He also stole a bag.
Shaun Garceau pitched 5 innings, allowing gave up 6 scattered hits, 3 of which were doubles. He allowed 2 runs while striking out 3.
Eddie Degerman slammed the door shut, pitching 4 innings of hitless ball and struck out 5 to 1 walk. In 18 innings, Degerman has 26 strikeouts to 3 walks. Gotta love that ratio. See DanUp’s take on the former Rice righty.
